Little Off-Topic: Pre-Built Submarine Models for Display?

Hi Guys

I hope I'm not getting hurt for posting this here ;) but I'm sure some of you can be helpful.

I'm looking for a pre-built (rather: finished) model kit, ideally of a IXD2 as in the addon, but I'll also take a VIIC. This one here is great: http://www.modelshipbuilding.com/144uboot.htm but I can't get any answers from that website by mail.

I had once upon a time my own (badly built) VIIC on display, but my cleaning maid broke it, and as I neither have time nor energy nor skills anymore, I'd really like to replace it with a finished kit. If anyone knows where to order such a thing, please let me know.

I'd certainly like to get a Type VIIC. But isn't that still a 1:144 scale model? I don't think buying two doubles the size.:rotfl: Checked that website you posted. Seems to be a great model.:up:
A catalog I get every so often in the mail has several die-cast models; from Gato's, Type VII's to Boomer's. Can't remember the scales right off hand. But they can be spendy, around $250.00. I have just rescently moved and things are still in disarray, but I'll check and see if I can find one of those catalogs. I thought maybe I might have one here at the office. But I do not. It's a great catalog. Covering all eras. Land, air and sea. Models, posters, jackets, clocks, etc. Now I have some boxes to dig through. I'll get back to you on that. Hopefully after lunch.

Sorry, you are correct, 1/144. There was a different 1/72 model someplace I was thinking of, never mind! I never really looked at the u-boat since I'd not ever buy one.

It seems this "Targa" (so the name of the company) "modular" VIIC can be had from a number of retailers, all the same product - now I'm looking for the cheapest one and possible one inside the EU to save taxes and shipping costs.

The catalog is Military Issue. And there is a web site, it is www.MilitaryIssue.com (http://www.MilitaryIssue.com). I paged through it at lunch. There is a 1:72 scale Gato-class $99.95. Sadly it is a plastic kit and not die-cast. For $259.00 there is a framed in glass 3-D 22 1/2" X 8 1/2" Cutaway USS Balao (SS-285).:o In the catalog anyway; no die-cast World War II subs. I guess I lied.:oops: But the catalog is full of other great stuff. For SH III; one could get a U-boat captain's peaked visor cap. Only $279.00.:o Now that I have paged through it; I think I might have place an order. World at War DVD set. $99.95. Gads!! This thread is gonna cost me! Thanks alot boys!:nope:

Thanks Schani. That website also stocks the 1/144 VIIC, and from all online shops I've seen so far it looks to be the most professional, easy order system and a decent price. I think I'll buy there.

Your readings skills maybe lacking. But how about my will power.:nope: After posting my reply and sent some electrical drawing to the plotter. (I work at an engineering firm.)
I jumped onto the Military Issue website, and proceeded to go on a scorched earth credit card frenzy.:rock: After it was finally over I had spent $404.85.:o The U-boat we've been talking about, DVD movie and last but definately not least a wooden? 1:150 scale (24" +/-) model of the USS Flasher. Just because I turned 50 on

I bouhgt some little, partially assembled jap DDs from some guy in Hong Kong, but they were cheap (1:700 scale).

Then I recieved another e-mail stating that two of my items are back ordered. One of those items is the USS Flasher.:cry: The one I want the most.

So now I have no idea when my shipment will arrive.

I checked out the HMS Suprise on the net. Holy Christ!!! I tip my hat to you sir. 1:48 scale. At $700.00. Over 4'-0" in length.:rock: Get it!

Regarding brass.
I think brass will tarnish with time. I have a couple of brass server trays my mom had cleaned some years ago and they are showing a pretty good coat of tarnishing. If not find a piece brass somewhere and test different solutions. Then with a fine brush you could weather the brass on your own. If not asked someone who deals with brass. Such as a musician, plumber, etc. They may give you a tip on what works with brass. I'll check with a couple of architects, engineers and/or contractors and see what they say.

True, or I could stop at Rio Grande jewelry supply, and get some patina that will oxidize it black in 1 pass.

I was looking at 5-700 bucks as a range for the "man cave." Problem is that the good place to put it in in reach of my 2 year old, hence another reason to wait.

Them be some fine models. And they are just a wee bit pricey. The best I could devine was for the USS Arizona 1/350 scale. $1,500.00.:o Almost everthing else, you have to call for a price. The old if you have to ask; you can't afford it. But the detail is exquisite. I believe made of wood. Boy I could really go to town. I'm guessing that the USS Lexington and other carriers would go for about $2,500.00 or so. I looked at the Gato/Balao's. At 36" (possibly 1/144 scale) maybe at or under $1,000.00. Still a tempting site to peruse through. I bookmarked the site just in case. I think in the future I'll find a damn good reason to justify a purhcase.:D

I checked out that Motion Models web site. To cool! I then went to the motor pool web site.I found the USS Yorktown (CV-10) 1/350 model from the Franklin Mint. I then out of curiosity I looked at the Franklin Mint site. And here are the results. Looking at the Yorktown on all three sites, looks to be exactly the same model. Motion models; no price unless you call them. The Franklin Mint $1,000.00. The Motor Pool (http://www.themotorpool.net) with shipping and handling and my 15% membership discount this month. $507.45. As I am seeing it,the Motor Pool carries the Franklin Model with in turn gets from Motion Models that in the end is costing me less than half the original price.:hmmm: Thus within a month this thread has cost me nearly $1,000.00. The Yorktown is shipping.:up: The USS Flasher and the Type VIIC is still in limbo.:wah:

And again a Bohemian (Czech) and his money are soon parted.:shifty:

Just to drive me crazy, one of the engineers here called down there to let me know it had arrived. The bastard! But I couldn't be happier. She is beautiful. Constructed with Mahogany and die-cast metal with 40 die-cast aircraft (One slightly damaged. No big whoop.) The detail is exquisite. From the mesh netting along No. 2 port side elevator to the radar and radio arrays. The 1944-45 MS 33/10a camoflage paint scheme. We messured her at 29 3/4". She is worth every 50,745 pennies.:up: Then the secondary bonus. When I returned to Grand Forks and opened her up. We had it awe factor going. I then went to the Motorpool website to download a pic of the flightdeck aircraft set-up. That is when I noticed something odd. The price had jumped to $999.95.:o I was tell Mike on the way back; that I couldn't figure out how a subsidiary company could sell a model at half the price the Franklin Mint was issuing. Which in turn came from Motion Models.:hmmm: Hell, had I known that I would have bought two and put the second one on E-Bay as mentioned earlier in this thread by Tater.:yep: Oh, Well. Still this is great. She is now on the mantel. And I can't wait for lunch so I can get home and admire my new aquisition.:smug:

This morning the UPS guy came to the office bearing gifts!:D The USS Barb!:rock: Though the on-line catalog said it would be the USS Flasher. I like Fluckey's boat all the same.:salute: Also the Type VII cut away was included.:DL The Type VII is only ONE model not two. It has removable side plates. I kinda thought that was what it would be after looking closer to the websites.

Military Issue also threw in the 2009 winter catalog.:shifty: They now have a Type VII 1/125 scale for $395.00 and a 1/350? scale Liberty Ship for $995.00. Both made of Philippine Mahogany. Same as the Yorktown and Barb.

Also (with assembly required) are 1/350 scale plastic Akagi and Kongo, $349.00 and $199.00 respectively.

Back to the original RSColonel querry. There is a 1/72 scale (52" long) plastic Gato-class for $99.95. It says simulated hull panels. Not sure if that means removable for cut-a-way view.
