PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERSTED IN PARTICIPATING
How many of us are honest to the game and use D.I.D.?
I thought it might be interesting to start a thread where we can
Post our mishaps. As we all know the U-Boats of WWII suffered
Over 30,000 in lost souls who never returned home. How does this
Compare to the losses in our SHIII simulation?
How to post your D.I.D. to this thread.
Bookmark this thread to your Browser to find it when you D.I.D.
After a D.I.D. Use SHIII Commander to print your personnel file.
Copy and paste your personnel file to this thread.
At the bottom of your paste type in a brief description of what caused Your D.I.D and what Grid you were in.
Delete the image file lineIf there is enough interest in this thread I will monitor the thread and post
all D.I.D.s to a BDU Lost Boat web page here. (http://www.silent-hunter-addict.com/SHIII_In_Honor_of.html)

Anyway not a D.I.D..... but wanted to bump your idea, and ask you a question. What does this mean "Delete the image file line" in your thread?
When you copy your file from SHII to the thread it will place a
marker for your Commanders image but not the image. Delete this.
BTW - Thanks for the bump I almost killed the project for lack of interest
tn the thread.

Gotcha ...will do.
Here is another suggestion. Maybe we should Edit our 1st post and post each patrol results (so each captain has only ONE post in the thread per living career)? Then when we die mark D.I.D at the top in BOLD and 6 font like this D.I.D
That way we can track eachothers career progress...and know when the D.I.D does happen. Then if you want to start a second captain, start a NEW post with the new career.
What do you think?

Obviously, real U-boat crews didn't have that luxury.

To the poster that is hesitant to do D.I.D it does help you play more realistic. You dont take as many stupid chances (unless your me but I suspect this is my last stupid chance). Especially as you get more patrols under your belt. Nothing like loosing a 20+ patrol captain in 1944 due to you deciding to hit a convoy in 25m of water :nope: :nope:
My last GWX 2.1 Career:
http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/oo113/Captainbasily/VonLiebe36/bp-total-1.jpg
It ended less than half an hour after Captain Von Liebe took a look at this baby and decided she's worth the risk.

Both the hunter and the prey lies some where beneath the North Atlantic.:dead:
GWX2.1 100% Realism. Patrol 43. 1944.
Cause of death:
Water is deep, so I think I could have gotten away (Like I did so many times before). My usual method is to back slowly from my firing position 1000-1500 away, point my bow at the DDs, and go deep. This time, I am a bit too close. Worse yet, an outside escort coming back to aid the sinking CVE came from my 4 o'clock and find me. Soon all 5 DD's are on top of me. The hedgehogs are evil, they don't even give any warning. One moment I am at 240M, thinking I am about to clear, that next moment, that "you are dead" screen...
Note: As soon as I had more time, I will write up some highlights on this career.

Now the strange part. I go back to map view and and plot course out of there and bump up TC to 64 at 50 km. scale
THEN IT HAPPENED. My officer icons and message window started spinning like a slot machine.

I play DiD with GWX on 97% realism (have still been using the event cam though I will turn it off for next career). But I have not had a successful enough career to post. Mostly strange things happen to me. I start in 1939 with my Type II as usual. I decide I will die of boredom if I have to spend another five weeks listening to the radio and waiting for the British to get into the war (love GWX, don't love how the game starts so early) so I decide to fight against Poland. I sail to Danzig and fiddle around for a week and a half, which at least is less annoying than two and a half. Turns out GWX doesn't model the raid by the Schleswig-Holstein. Well, the harbor is still full of Polish ships for me to sink. To my amusement the harbor is German even though all the ships are Polish and the other harbors in the area are Polish. Historically Danzig did not become German for a week. The usual torpedo problems, I manage to sink only two ships with my five torpedoes. One misses while fired directly at the stack of a stationary ship with only 20 degree deflection. Huh. One predetonates, one is either set at the wrong depth or runs at the wrong depth, two hit. I sneak out underwater. I've gotten halfway to the channel into the open Baltic and suddenly two Polish destroyers materialize out of nowhere. I'm sunk when I crash into the bottom at flank speed trying to dodge depth charges. Well, the impact didn't sink me but it pretty much put the writing on the wall.
Previous to that I had the strangest career ever - set sail in 1939 with my Type II (as always), sailing past Norway I encounter some tugboat and it's towing something! I investigate and it's a Norwegian tug so I can't sink it, and there's what looks like a light ship but it's completely red, like it's made of rust. Light ship has no flag. I leave them be. Sail to England, war starts, find a perfectly stationary ship right off the coast of Scotland, ID'd as depot ship, I sink it. Sailing around for a while I manage to sink a coastal merchant and then go on a run of bad aim and run out of torpedoes. But hey I sank that depot ship ... oh wait! Debriefing says it was a neutral minelayer. A neutral what what? I spent 400 renown on fancy officers this patrol so I'm short this game anyway and there goes most of the rest of it.
Next patrol I head out, back to Scotland. Hear dolphins. Chase the dolphins all over the North Sea, those little guys really haul fin. Just before I run the dolphins down I hear a sonar contact. Oh well, duty calls! Tracking the merchant by hydrophone I finally track him down and ... it's an English fishing boat. If he is after tuna I have some dolphins for him. Unfortunately the sea is a little too rough for me to use the flak gun, there's no deck gun on this boat and I'm not shooting a torpedo at a fishing boat so today the English will receive their strategically critical mackerel.
Back to chasing dolphins. Finally run them down and get some nice screenshots. I save and reload here only to find that my watch crew has spawned clones of themselves, even though I was on the surface when I saved. OK, well at least I won't be short of crew this mission.
Back to the patrol. Scotland beckons, I'm patrolling in the North Sea east of Edinburgh. I see two destroyers. OK, wait for them to pass. I see an ocean liner, it's Norwegian. Norwegian cruise lines, typical. I sink a coastal merchant but it takes two torpedoes for some reason, leaving me with three. I get a contact report of a convoy near me, heading right for Edinburgh. They're going 9 knots and my top speed is 12. I try to chase them down before they get away. I pursue but their picket destroyer is going back and forth and I have to make a really wide berth. Suddenly another destroyer comes charging across at a 90 degree angle. I wonder if the convoy has changed course but I have to dive. Afterward I figure he's probably just a random destroyer on patrol because he passes and the convoy doesn't come with. I try to chase the convoy down but I can't pick them up again. The hydrophones on the type II are crap and you can't upgrade them.
But, I manage to pick up a lone merchant. Well, ok. I stalk this guy for probably two hours of real time because I want to plot a perfect firing solution. I trace his speed and course exactly, get ahead of him and line up the perfect shot. I fire, it goes right under him. WTF, I had it set to default depth! I fire again, it hits him right below the stack, it's a dud. Argh! I've got one torpedo left and now he's moving out of position. I fire my last torpedo and it hits him right in the propeller. He sinks. I return to base triumphantly. In debriefing I find out he was Axis. AXIS?
I'm sent to Siberia, or whatever the Germans do.
So I'm not just playing death-is-death, I'm also playing court martial-is-court martial.
Sigh.

I nearly lost Oblt.zS Uhlig today. He was set upon by two Sunderlands just as he surfaced a week out from St. Nazaire. Severe damage, lost his Biscay Cross. Fortunately the next day the weather turned really bad and he was able to scoot home on the surface. Now he's having a snorkel installed.

Oct 22nd, 1942, U-149 attacked a convoy of 5 soviet ships off the Eastern Back Sea. After using all 5 torpedoes to sink 2 ships (including the escort) and wounded another 2, U-149 surfaced to attack 3 unarmed merchant ships with flak gun. After sinking a coastal tanker, Captain Jahn turned his attention to a wounded and stopped Passenger/Cargo. He close to within 100 meter before opening fire. After a few shots, the victim exploded violently, a truck on the cargo deck flew into the air and landed right on top of the uboat. (sorry, not picture available because external camera was disabled and the captain was dumb founded by this inicredible situation).
When the stunned captain come about to realize the perilous situation and start the emergency repairs, U-149 was already motally wounded. 1 crew member died when the truck landed on top of the flak gun, killing him instantly. Another died of his wounds after abandoning ship. They should consider themselves lucky. After scuttling their boat, the remining crew are taken prisoner by the Soviets, sent to Siberia, half of them are never heard from again.

The thread has had over 500 viewers but only your two
reported D.I.D.'s.If someone views the thread multiple times it counts once for each, I think.
Sigh.
Regarding waiting 5 weeks for the war to start. Just take a 2 day patrol. Your second patrol will then start around Aug 23rd leaving just enough time to get to your grid when the war starts.
With neutrals and axis, they should have flags so you have to id then first.
Start with a type VIIB its less frustrating than the TypeII. Especially with the duds early on.

Four days with no mis-haps?
Well, I've mostly been running patrols in type VII boats this week (July-September 1943). They don't get killed nearly as often as type IX boats in 1943. My type IXs are just doing shakedown cruises for the new crews that are replacing my losses in the 2nd and 10th Flotillas, or in drydock for extensive repairs and refit.
I had a type IX returning from a shakedown cruise attacked by aircraft just off Lorient. It was so close to base that the Vorpostenboot coming out to meet me engaged the aircraft with its forward gun.
Meanwhile, U-632 of the 1st Flotilla (Oblt.zS Volker Vogel) has just returned to Brest from a 26 day patrol in August 1943 during which he sank 9 ships totalling 50,756 tons, including a passenger liner and 5 other ships in a British convoy headed for Gibralter. The only damage he sustained was when rammed by a destroyer that had crept up on him in the fog. The lookouts spotted the destroyer just in time to crash dive, so that the damage was mostly superficial, in the area of the wintergarten.
U-212 of the 11th Flotilla in Bergen (Oblt.zS Quirin Quast) is about to engage a convoy in AL26, so perhaps there will be some blood in the water for you.

Thank you.
Quast survived the experience. He only got two ships out of the convoy, a Troopship and a T2. He returned to Bergen after a 30 day patrol with a total score of 7 ships for 45896 tons. The only damage to the sub was a bit of paint scraped off the bottom of the keel when he crash dived to avoid air attack while still in Norwegian coastal waters.

We are doing great. Five days without a D.I.D.
Well, I finally had a type IX boat survive a patrol in 1943. Just barely. Had to put into El Ferrol for emergency repairs. While I was there the Englsh attacked the Max Albrecht, while he was anchored in a Spanish harbour. Those Limeys have no repect for international law.
Meanwhile, my four type VII careers are going along quite nicely - about 140,000 tons between them in their August-September patrols.
U-409 (Oblt.zS. Claus Karlsson) had some trouble with aircraft in the Med during October '43 though. Got bounced by 5 Sunderlands after being repeatedly harassed by aircraft for 6 consecutive days. Was out of oxygen and low on battery power so had to stay on the surface and fight it out. Shot down all five Sunderlands, but the last one dropped bombs so close that the entire crew on deck was killed, and major damage caused. The sub survived to limp back to Toulon, not daring to submerge below periscope depth. Those killed were: the IWO, Oblt.zS. Karl Lenk, Oberbootsmann Ernst Arndt and Matrosenhauptgefreiters Horst Esswein, Helmut Fleck, and Curt Gerstner. Lenk will receive the EK I posthumously, and Arndt the EK II.

I've just come across this thread and it's very interesting. I always play D.I.D. and once the boat is lost it's lost for good. So far I have never progressed further than mid 1943 in any career. However, reading some of the careers posted, I don't see the point in playing D.I.D. if other "real life" limits are not placed on the game. To cram patrol after patrol in, a lot starting the very day after docking from the previous patrol and then ending up with huge tonnage "records" and more medals than Hermann Goering is in no way realistic even if you do end it with D.I.D.

Playing D.I.D., I believe, adds a lot to the game. Without D.I.D. SHIII would
be like an arcade game. U-Boats had the highest casuality rate then any other
combat force in WWII. I believe that only about 3,000 returned of the 30,00 that went to sea.
Death cards were infact issued to those who died. To survive took a lot of skill
just as SHIII does.

Yes, I've read many, many factual books on U-boat warfare, especially the Battle Of The Atlantic, and to me, Kaleuns going back out on patrol the day after they docked and continuing to do this for years while accumulating some of the huge tonnages shown in this thread is like an arcade game where there is no hope at all of recreating any careers resembling the real thing.
Just my way of playing the game - I could no more sail out again the day after docking in the hopes of cramming in more and more tonnage and medals than I could resurrect a career finished by D.I.D. It just seems false to me.

I agree with you, but I would go even further. People who were Kaleuns in 1939 would not still be doing that job in 1943. I use SH3 Commander's Realistic Career Length option (with my own tweaks) to limit how long one person stays in command of a front boat before being kicked upstairs. My longest serving Kaleun lasted 25 months, during which time he did 14 war patrols, but that was an aberration. The average career length of my Kaleuns who survived is currently 12 months as a front boat commander with 8.3 war patrols. I think that is close enough to historical reality for me to be satisfied. So, for me, a career that lasts from 1939 into 1943 is just as unrealistic as one that continually leaves the day after returning to port.
What I do is: whenever a commander is killed or retired, I start a new career in the same flotilla that begins at the start of the month in which the previous career ended. I do this in each flotilla that is modeled by the stock game, so in 1943 I have 7 careers running concurrently.

Kapitänleutnant Egon Schultz and U-53 surrendered to the Allies on 30JAN40. Egon Schultz was sent to a POW camp in Scotland where he spent the rest of the war. Egon Schultz died on 26 December 1997
Extract of interrogation of Schultz: All of a sudden there was this Flower corvette within touchable distance, out of nowhere. The watch crew must have been asleep. I should never had taken the Canal to save time.

Summary
In 1941, Lieutenant Commander Kazuo Hashimoto was the naval attache in Berlin. After the outbreak of war, he arranged for the purchase of a IXC boat in exchange for raw strategic materials. He then volunteered to take the boat back to Japan as her captain.
He received temperary comission (as OBERFÄHNRICH Z. S.) in the KM and undertook 4 very successful patrols in the Eastern US seaboard and Caribean in U-511 under the KM ensign.
On April 15th, 1943, as the U-511 passed the southern tip of Africa, the German navy jack is lowered on U-511 for the last time. The U-511 were then re-christened the RO-500 into the Imperial Japanese Navy.
U-511/RO-500 was lost sometime on 20NOV43 while attacking a convoy outside of Capetown. Lieutenant Commander Hashimoto and his entire crew become the only IJN unit lost in the Atlantic.

Bad luck. You have to be carefull when loading mods. Rule of thumb be in port and roll back SHIII commander prior to adding mods. It may be possible to load some while in game but why take a chance?

Playing D.I.D. (Dead is dead) is the upmost in game play. If your U Boat and crew are destroyed you can not go back to a saved game to play again. You are dead and must start a new game with new U Boat and crew.
Death card was a death announcement that BdU sent out when a sailor was lost.

Newbie question :)
Is d.i.d. (death is death) a special mod? And if so ... where can I find it, furthermore is this (mod) specific only for GWX?
Thanks!

No mods needed, but its easy to end up in a Death Card if you play GWX :D.
Just be true to yourself and if you get blasted, accept it, post it here and begin a new career. Nothing else needed.

OK, thanks for your explanation, it is up to you if you are "cheating" by loading a saved career or accept that you're death. R.I.P.
I understand the meaning of it. Thanks again :)

Details of Loss
U-1225 was the last U-boat to leave Lorient, doing so under enemy gunfire and air attack. U-1225 was heavily damaged by depth bombs while attempting to find a way past the anti-submarine nets the Allies had placed across the mouth of the estuary at Lamor-Piages and Gavres. Despite this, KptLt. Unger guided U-1225 past the ASW vessels patrolling outside the sub-net and escaped across the Bay of Biscay. While en route to Bergen, U-1225 encountered and sank 7 vessels totalling 36,124 tons. While maneuvering to attack the last of these, U-1225 was severly damaged by VLR Liberators flying out of Iceland. Despite losing one diesel engine, Unger was able to complete the attack. U-1225 was sunk the next day, October 12, 1944, by an RCAF Catalina, north of the Faeroe Islands.

Leutnant z. S. Hans Ackermann and U-133 were lost sometime on 10APR42.
Leutnant Ackermann was lost when following a small British convoy in the Bay of Biscay. The A&B Class depth charged U133 causing the batteries to be destroyed and heavy flooding to take place. Ackermann ordered a emergency surface, and just as U133 surfaced, the merchants fired upon the bridge. U133 then sank to its end killing all hands.
