View Full Version : GWX 3: Radio Log_Expanded Update Mod
Many thanks to the creator(s) of the Radio Log Expanded Updated mod for GWX 3. It adds a lot to the enjoyment of SH3.
The GWX 2 version of the mod provoked some discussion about whether during WWII BdU actually sent messages about U-boat losses and crew casualties, especially since they would have had an adverse effect on morale. I chose to edit the .txt file and deleted all messages of the type "We regret to to report that U-xxx has been sunk...".
Now that I've installed GWX 3, I've been editing the Radio Log_Expanded Update mod to remove all messages from BdU reporting U-boat losses, damage to harbour facilities from Allied bomber attacks, etc. In so doing, I noticed that there are many messages reporting enemy naval losses at sea.
Some of these messages are about the sinking of major enemy warships like the Ark Royal and the Hood. However, there are numerous reports about enemy torpedo boats, motor launches, motor fishing vessels, etc. In reality, did BdU notify U-boats about the loss of these relatively minor types of enemy ships?

There was a great deal of chatter between the boats and command. Not possible to gain accurate boat to boat communications so I used different reports to fill the gaps. Including intercepts, agents reports etc.
Did all the boats get the traffic from bdu? Probably not, but sinkings could boost moral, what other news was good at the time?
You can of course delete the lines you don't want. RL_E was ment to be complete as possible but also a base for players who want to see custom jazz.

as for sinking u-boats, my distress messages mod was humbly included in gwx3- its reports from u-boats to base on the open frequency stating attacks from warships etc. these did occur during the battle of the atlantic, and yes, did effect moral.....
but thats the beauty of the message file, its accessible enough to change what you want:up:

Getting bad news from intercepts of distress calls from other U-boats and intercepts of messages from Allied ships about the sinking of U-boats is unavoidable. I didn't remove those, just the "official" messages from BdU announcing U-boat losses, etc.

o.k mate
i didnt realise those were left in gwx3.0:up:
Does the Radio Log_Expanded mod replace the stock SH3 messages_en.txt file, or add to that file?
I'm asking because although I had edited the Radio Log_Expanded messages_en.txt file to remove all reports from Bdu of enemy naval losses at sea, I just received one such message during my current mission.
I wrote down the message, and searched the mod's .txt file for it, but no such message was found. However, when I searched the stock messages_en.txt file, I found it, as well as all of the other messages of this type.
Any idea as to why I got a message that had been deleted from the Radio Log_Expanded?
FWIW, I am continuing a career that I had started in GWX 2.1.

Jay; If you JSGME RL_E then yes it will replace your existing file in GWX.
If you do a manual install, or copy RL_E's 11,000+ lines into the games file then you'll wind up with duplicate city. But it sounds like your familiar with how to easily edit the file.
Depending on how you did your search - some messages may have a different header, or lead in so to say. Maybe even a typo. :|\\
I'm still on 2.1, carrer in the Med looking for these mysterious uber DE's. Although I'll admit, by mid `44 they are getting to be an annoyance.

I used JSGME to install the mod.
In the case of the "enemy naval losses at sea" message that was received, I searched RL_E for the ship named in the message. Nothing was found. So, it's still a mystery as to where that message came from.

AFAIK game only reads from one message file
messages_en or messages_de or messages_fr
Messages files named as anything else wont get read
I may be wrong there but think thats right
How many message files do you have in \data\Campaigns\Campaign ?

In Mods/RL_E/data/campaigns/campaign there is only one file: messages_en.txt.
Could someone familiar with RL_E give me an example of a message (other than of the "we regret to inform..." type) that is not in the stock SH3? If there is such a message that is sent around 1940907, I can see if it appears in the radio log of my current mission. That should let me determine whether RL_E actually has been installed by JGSME.

Easiest way is to open SilehtHunterIII/data/campaigns/campaign and note the size of the message_en file
If the same size as the one in the mods folder then is enabled

Thanks to your suggestion, I finally figured out 1) what happens when the RE_L is installed by JSGME, and 2) why I continued to receive supposedly deleted messages.
1) I thought that when RL_E is installed, messages_en in the MODS folder is used by the game. Now I understand that the RE_L messages_en file replaces the stock file in the SH3/data/campaigns/campaign folder, and that the game uses that folder (not the Mods folder). I also figured out that the stock message_en file is saved in the MODS/!BACKUP folder.
2) I had been editing the file in the MODS folder. Obviously, this had no effect on the file the game is using.
I have copied the edited file from the MODS folder to the SH3/data/.... folder. I think this case is closed.
