WTF is SubsimMachFest? It is our very own short film festival! Welcome to the first Annual Subsim Machinima Short Video Festival. Contenders for the awards will be posted on http://au.youtube.com/user/SubsimMachFest I'm looking for the best 7 minute machinima videos containing a submarine that you can create.

Being Subsim we need a theme for our vid fest and of course it is submarines. It doesn't matter if you don't use a sub sim to make your vid but in the 7 minutes you have to include at least one submarine whether it is simulated or otherwise.

So all you budding machinima makers, crank up your skills for a chance to win one of the following awards:The envelope please:
Best of the Fest - U-Boat Capt hat won by Fate by Mr. Fleck
Best Comedy - U-Boat Video won by Dolphin by Mr. Fleck
Best Drama - SH3 recognition manual autographed by the developers (Generously supplied by Fatty) won Fate by Mr. Fleck
Best Direction - U-Boat Clock won by Riding the Waves by Torpo 653
Best Cinematography - U-Boat Video won by Riding the Waves by Torpo 653
Best Editing - U-Boat Video won by Meeting with History by Chisum
Best use of sound - Subsim crew T-Shirt won by Tie: U979 Parts 1 & 2 by 2ndBestKiller
Peoples choice - Subsim Battle Mug won by Fate by Mr. FleckCongratulations and well done to all. Iceman and Fincuan will receive a gift for entering. Both good entries but there were just others better this time around. Keep working on an entry for next year. You never know...

Mr. Fleck your entry Fate was superb and a well deserved winner of the Capt's cap. It had drama and suspense as well as great imagery and camera work. Dolphin kind of won the comedy award by default as there were no other comedies entered but was still a good short which I got a laugh out of.

Torpo, I really likes the way this was put together and it had a great feel to it from the opening to the end. Great camera work, use of lighting and sound. All round great effort!

Chisum, not strictly submaine but I really like the editing job you did splicing tegether the stills and the game footage with the text and sound. Another solid effort.

2ndBestKiller, I really like the use of the Das Boot sound track in this effort. Great work!

Winners please make your acceptance speeches below. That just about wraps up the festival for this year. Post your interest in participating next year in any form, here so I can get an idea if this is worth doing again.

To receive your prizes please PM me with your details for delivery.

Until next year...

The rules for entries are simple:
All entries must be received by 5pm AEST (Sydney, Australia) on1 March 2009. Any entries received after this time will not be considered.
All entries must be less than 7 mins long and must contain a submarine, simulated or otherwise. Other than that I don’t care what games or tools you used to create your entry.
All entries should have ending credits with: "Dive into the Web's #1 Submarine and Naval Resource: SUBSIM.com"
Entries can be mailed on digital media or made available to me to download. To notify me of your entry by PM or e-mail. PM me to obtain my e-mail address.
Individuals may submit as many entries as they wish
All entries being considered for an award will be posted by me on the SubsimMachFest (http://au.youtube.com/user/SubsimMachFest) youtube channel.
All entries must be your own work although using material from other sources is allowed as long as it is properly credited. I have no interest in holding the rights to the videos other than the right to post them on the SubsimMachFest site.
All content must comply with the posting rules for Subsim, so no porn, racial or political vilification or abuse of any sort will be considered valid.
This is my film festival and I am the judge so if you have any complaints about my judging talk to the hand cos it’s my festival and the entries have to please me.
As the judge I cannot enter the competition in any way shape or form.Post here if you are interested in taking part or know someone who would be. Any questions post em here also.

Good to see some interest coming in already. I'll be looking for original engaging and entertaining storytelling inside the 7 mins, so no vids of you cat sleeping whilst you play DW or SH3 or 4!:nope:

I'm also working on getting some sort of prizes lined up, so stay tuned and good luck!

You should have told me that BEFORE I made a 18 min long video :shifty:

Anyway, what exactly does "Best Cinematography" mean (sry english isnt my native language)? Is it similar to direction or editing?

I hope I can come up with another idea, but to be honest I wont have too mucg time the nxt few months, pitty.

Cinematography is the making of lighting and camera choices when making a movie. I'll be looking for good use of camera positioning, lighting and lighting effects to help add atmosphere and feeling to the storytelling. A good example of good cinematography is in this vid by Topo65: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIrA2lsP7lw

@Fatty, thanks for the offer. I'm looking at making sure winners will be happy with their prizes. $ are not on the table this time round as I don't have enough for me let alone 7 of you beggars!:p But prizes there will be and they will be good!

NP. I originally won it a few years ago in a contest here in SUBSIM promoting SH4. It even has a congratulatory sticky note on the front from Abraham . I never used it for playing SH3 and as such it has been sitting on my bookshelf for the last few years and is in pristine condition. The entire dev team has autographed the inside cover. Let me know if you want to use it.

I'm assuming it'd be impossible to ask for an extension?

As the project comes together more and more, I feel like a real developer, pushing back release dates.

Though I never really cared when say, SH3 was delayed, I know how frustrating it can be especially when I promised everyone at the meet a playable demo by December, and it's almost March!

TarJak
02-14-09, 01:26 AM

well actually I will have my assessment center for becoming a designated medical officer in a few wekks, but I'm probably more into the normal army or maybe the Luftwaffe (airforce), however imo the navy has the best uniforms^^.

btw: when will the public vote start? I'd suggest to start a poll tomorrow or sometime soon and let it run for a week, so we have both results at thesame time.

Ok, there is the link to my movie reworked:

http://files.filefront.com/Meeting+with+History+7z/;13396136;/fileinfo.html

I need also say a little explain about the movie, explain who seems necessary because I had a feedback from french people who ask me why I have shifted black & white for color and after back again in B/W.
I get an answer but its to precise and I can't traduce exactly...
If someone is enough strong to translate I will be happy and I thanks him a lot.

And I finish with a very big thanks to TarJak to this contest.

Regards.

NP Chisum.

Now that all the entries are in we can get the show on the road.

Judging will be taking place over the next week and each movie will be judged on its merits in terms of the criteria in the first post of this thread. What I'm looking for is a good solid story being told concisely and with atmosphere. Unfortunately the comedy aspect looks limited as most of the pieces entered are fairly serious. But that just makes the best drama category more exciting.

Voting in the peoples choice category is now open. The poll will close on 10 March. Cast you vote and see who is leading the race.

To all contestants good luck and may the best films win. Prizes will be announced with the winners of each category.

Movie #1 and #2 look to be excellent but they are to dark to see. Might just be my computer.

Anyway, my choice was Mr Flecks. I have seen his work before and it is all imaginative. The real clincher for me was bringing in the British sub. Unexpected and very cool idea.

Well the problem with the darkness is the compression. I have the uncompressed verion on my PC and it looks fine. But compressed all the detail get lost, however if ypu are in a darkrom you should still be able to see the important sections.

Thats a knightly gesture. :DL

I'll keep my fingers crossed for all the submittants! For me the most important thing in this contest is to motivate people to make their own U-Boat movies and movies about naval warfare. There are too less movies covering this topic and there should be more!

Thats really a pity, since the lighted scenes have very nice colors. I guess you put quite some effort in post processing. Including the cool scene in the beginning with the water droplets and the camera shaking: Cinematographic! (is this an English word?)

Cheers!

For me the most important thing in this contest is to motivate people to make their own U-Boat movies and movies about naval warfare.

Note that in my case, the movie was not made to this occasion and it's a real hazard if I'm present in this contest lol. But you right, it's important to motivate due the incredible work means made a movie.

About the darkness I suppose that the jury can watch all movies in real format and quality it is not ?
But for us who must watch only on YouTube it's a real pity.

About the vote, I think also that "Fate Mr Fleck" is born to win and it is already in my video collection.

Some great efforts there people....it is really difficult to pick from the pack.

I've two in mind and will make a decision soon.

It's just a pity that the votes can be seen before the individual casts their preference.

Not in my case at least since the hd version would be several GB big and I dindnt want to upload that. He got a 3 mbit version which means its still highly compressed but at least way better than youtube.

Regarding the effort put into my video: oh well yes, ot was qiute some work, I guess it took me about 50 hours or so ( preparations like nodding amd ideas for for camera movements etc, the dilming itself with some trial and error and of course a lot of postproduction with AE, what imo makes my video the brst looking one at least in daylight)

But its rewarding when you finallY fonish you piece of work and its something Im proud of and Im still learning. Next time I wont use nightshots :) .

Sry for badwritimg I used my Ipod to write this on the go hehe .

The only SH3 night movie that I did was Sink the Hood (http://www.dailymotion.com/user/Dayrton/video/x6fq4r_hms-hood_videogames) and it was a pity.
Forced to increase the brightness in WMM and after it still necessary to increase again the brightness of the monitor to watch something...
Finally this movie is good to delete but it was a good moment and I keep it.

Thats really not much. I think the problem is, that the poll is not linked on the main page. Maybe TarJak could ask Neal to do this. E.g. put the existing link on top of the page with the addition "Votes now open" or the like.

My vote goes to Fate by Mr. Fleck - as it is simply brilliant and outstanding.

ok then will give my humble oppionion to some of the entries.

Today: Riding the waves by Tordo

the first two scenes are really amazing with this romtantic and warm sunrise (or sunset who knows) and the typogrphy you used (moving text). If there is any complain I would say that the very first scene is too static, some movement would have been great, but it gets better with the beach scene, which gives that amazing view towards the glaring sun. That was the best part of the whole movie imo.
The next transitions was pretty cool and went good with the music, I also liked the camera setting at this point, only complaint from my point would be the font of the text that doesnt quite fit with the font you used for the starting credits but ok thats just me.
Next scene: the brownish colorfilter ... well ... I dont know about that one, maybe you had a certain intention with it, but I didnt quite get it. It just seems to be out of place with the next scene being in color again. Similar things go for the camera placement. It didnt look too good to me in this scene, especially compared to the ones before, you didnt get the feeling of speed or being in a storm.
In the next scene you tried to give a way more intense feeling of "riding the waves" by placing the camera at the frint of your sub, what helped a lot to improve the scene. Complaint: the camera seemed a little bit too static again, some movement to the front could have brought some more dynamic into the shot, especially the first one in which you see a part of the bridge.
The next shoots are pretty good, I'm not sure if your sub was going full ahed, it seemed a bit slow, but if its not going faster thats not your fault.
The part with the screw was a good idea but again it lacked some dynamic, I guess a different shot in a different angle could do wonders, but its ok the way you did it, just space for improvement.
I liked the shot where you see the bow of the sub "cutting" through the waves, that was a good shot.
For the next shot... I'm not sire but is the sub not moving? It seems that way^^, ot its at least very slow, what is contrary to the scene before and after that one, where it is moving quiete fast. For the next shot you did something very good: camaer movement^^ , its a very dynamic shot, I liked it a lot, gives the feeling of an endless ocean and freedom, especially with the music in the backround, good shot.
Same goes for its successor, which calms down the speed (now you need the static camera, that was very good^^), again it created a good atmosphere (and I liked the seagulls, never seen that before, very nice). Pretty much the same goes for the next scene, only comlpaint here are jumps you editied. If the scene is too long just cut it away completely and bring something new, change the camera position. I think it wasn necesarry to see the whole sub going by, should have splitted it up into two scenes.
The seagulls, again, were awesome, very nice shot. The camera posiotion when the sub was going to dive was good, but again some more movement would have been great (camera going up or down or sideways, or zooming).
Then again, I wanst sure if your submarine was standing still underwater, but I guess, what doesnt make too much sense with it moving in the two fkanking scenes.
The shot from the insdie of the sub were very good, great camera movment, the opacity of the above layer wasbt perfect all the time, sometimes the changes happened to fast and you could see the backround too much for my taste, but overall good work here.
Now we get to something I to wrong all the times as well. Showing of the the enemy ships in a cool and dramatic way. I know its freaking difficult, but I have to criticise it anyway^^. It didnt seem that those ships are enemies, especially because they werent introduced properly. They just randomly appear. Later you have a scene were oyu look through the periscope while its sinking, you should have used it here to make clear that those ships are enemies. Biggest problem might have been the music at this point, I would have changed it to something a little bit darker.
Its like you are celebrating the death of those people, with this actually pretty cheerful music (and isnt that ship supposed to be a passenger ship -.-). Also no camera movement again, which is crucial for a scene like that. I mean torpedos, explosions, sinking ship, people dying. It all seems pretty unmotivated and as if you just put it in for the hell of it. In my oppinion the worst seen of the whole movie, not entierly bad, but compared to the rest pretty weak.
The first dynamic shot in this scene came when you had this cool camera shot where you see the waving flag and the sinking ship (I didnt like the zoom here but thats taste).
The shoots of the sinking ship were good and somehow rembered me of Titanic (which I think is a good movie^^), but again the music didnt fit. It would have really saved the whole part of this movie if you changed it some melancholic, dark, violin like sort of music or similar.
Something wierd: The ships sinks while the moon is going up and the next scene shows the other ship at a beautifull sunset (very good scene).
The part in which you can see the camera at the front of the ship is really good as well, I especially liked the panorama (same goes for the very last part where the sub is returning to its harbour), but it was too short and the next scene, which looks good, was too long.

Overall and if you take out the somehow unmotivated passanger ship attack, it was one of the best SH movies I've every seen. It was very atmospheric and had some great shots. At the beginning you really used the music flow and created a good cooperation between music and video. Sometimes I missed some dynamic and even if the shoots were very good it was a pitty to see the pontential the scene would have had.
The movie suffered from keeping the same music track until the end. Next time change it, or keep this wonderfull flow going and abandon any attacking scenes. And as I said, some more introduction to who and why you shoot would be good.

Other than that, great movie!

I hope you liked that little review  of mine and maybe you can learn something for the next time, because I'm really looking forward seein more of you. If you improve some the things I mentioned, you would have the talent to create something incredible, keep it going.

Ok, I will do another review in Mr. Flecks movie due to its popularity among you guys and after that I will only do another review if you wish me to so so (dont expect it be that long, since its some work and I dont have too much time this weekend, but I really liked this one, so I decided to make that review a little bit more indepth)

But at least for me there is also an other motivation. In the last years I got help here at forum or could download free mods. This is absolutly perfect. It's also the same for me, I can't creat a mod, I can't creat a skin, I can't creat a sounds bank but I want to give something to this wonderfull community.

Video is the only way I found to give something and I regrets the poor quality due I can only use WMM witch is too poor to make all I want.
I get also CS3 and Vegas but unable to understand how it works...

However, I voted and as you can see, not for me but for the movie I prefer.

PS: I still curious, how do you do to jump your U-Boot in "Dolphin" ???

You may want to search for tutorials on the web. I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and watched some tutorials (also on youtube) to learn things. I know you don't feel comfortable at the beginning but later on it's rewarding.

Hint understood! :DL

PS: I still curious, how do you do to jump your U-Boot in "Dolphin" ???
I changed the power of the engines (diesel and electric), deepened the crush depth and modified torpedo speed and torpedo impact. Back then I used Timetravellers Mini Tweaker, nowadays I would have taken Skwasjers Silent 3ditor (as I have to modify the camera, T class sub, torpedo, etc. for "Fate").

After that it's only about timing to get the jumps right. For the jump over the cruiser I shot at least 20 scenes, until I were satisfied with the result.

Basically I started submerged at 200 meters, ordered Full ahead. I don't know the speed the boat reached in 2-3 secs but it was fast, so the pressure on the dive planes was big enough to get it vertical.

I could dig out an old version of my files, if you want to try it out. I think it was for type VIIB. The files are quite old so my modification shurely is not compatible to any of the big mods like GWX. PM me your mail address if you would like the files.

Bravo! Good job, everyone.

Enigma by Iceman; Kudos on choice of subsim, Enigma. Nice to see a non-SH subsim represented, and the presentation looks great.

Riding the Waves by Torpo 653: Great concept, very good timing and transitions. Music is inspiring. Video really shows off the splendor and glory that is Silent Hunter 4.

Dolphin by Mr. Fleck: Awesome, I love Mr. Fleck's work. Ha ha, SH3 as flipper! I bet Otto had to spend a lot of reknown to get that kind of horsepower. Seems like the audio track was disabled. No matter, I just hummed the theme from Hogan's Heroes.

Fate by Mr. Fleck: Oh man, you can tell a lot of work went into this one. How amazing, has the feel of a real movie. Ha, when the plane strafes the U-boat, the watch ducks down. Ubisoft Romania are geniuses. Great voiceovers, staging, music, and camera work, really makes SH3 shine. Top notch work, even has a nice twist at the end.

Silent Hunter 4 Night Attack by Fincuan: Cool intro! Nice, solemn tone, music matches nicely. Nice joke at the end!

U979 Part1 and 2 by 2ndBestKiller: Damn, that Type XXI looks great! We sure have come a long way since Silent Service II and Aces of the Deep. Nice sunset shots, majestic music. Makes me long for the sea. Sweet segue into Das Boot audio and music. Good effects.

Meeting with History by Chisum: Wait, I thought this was about submarines.... nice compilation and corresponding historical text...wait, there may be a sub in this yet....nicely done.

Although we are only permitted to vote for a general favorite, I really think that Torpo's entry should win best cinematography, and best soundtrack. Based on that alone, I voted for him for best overall. I think the entry was just stunning.

That being said, the main reason I voted for Torpo was that I had a hard time deciding amongst the other entries in all other categories. Enigma looked pretty damn cool, but the resolution of the video made it hard to tell. Probably a fault on my end. Dolphin also looked like it could be pretty funny, but I guess youtube removed the soundtrack, which kind of diminished the humor value.
Fate was ****ing awesome, possibly better than riding the waves, except in the categories of cinematography and soundtrack, imo. It was difficult to decide between the two, but Riding the Waves reached me on a more personal level.

2ndBestKiller should get mad props if nothing else for beautifully synching the Das Boot sounds with his video. The only reason I eliminated him from candidacy best overall was because of a nitpickiness towards historical accuracy.

Meeting with History, while really cool, was decidedly lacking in submarines. It's a bit of a cop-out judgement, and I am sorry for that, Chisum, but it was so hard to decide which video was the best, I had to start getting really picky.
For the record, you win the "Most Epic" award in my book.

After seeing all the entries, I'm glad that mine was plagued by technical difficulties and time constraints. I would have been quite embarrassed had I submitted mine:oops:

Best Editing - U-Boat Video won by Meeting with History by Chisum

Dear TarJak, dear community,

first I would like to say thank you for setting up a movie festival! I think this is a great idea and I hope you will continue to do so the next year.

I hope that even more people will take part next time. The more entries the more fun it is for the audience and also for us movie makers the pool of inspiration and ideas is bigger.

A big thank you to all the people who posted comments and voted. At least for me feedback is very important. Please continue to do so the next time.

Also you are distributing some very nice prizes among the winners. Actually I'm really surprized to win that many awards...phew!

But to answer your question: Yes, I would like to participate next year too, time permitting.

Ok, here comes the part where I should thank my cat, the guy who brought me the pizza, my cleaning personnel, my neighbor, my wife (yes in this order :arrgh!:), but I think I'll skip this part :03:.

Cheers to all! :woot:

Fleck, well earned for Fate. gotta say, tho, that without that piece of music, it wouldn't have been the same:rock:

Thank you! Yes you are right music and sound do add a lot to the ambience. Btw it was not only one piece of music but approximately 15 fragments. Some play only for a few seconds. Also Im glad all the pieces fit well together since they are from 3 different sound tracks: 'Below', 'K-19' and 'Master and Commander'. Although I used only one from 'K-19 (Last Scene) and 'Master and Commander' (Under water scene where depth charges are falling down).

Cheers!

Sorry I could not get a better entry in but many of you know I am still dealing with an evil X wife and am embroiled in a bitter divorce...I'll spare you the details but things are looking hopeful slowy...anyways I had repurchased a copy of SHIIII just have to get a better graphics card to play it again....anywho....Glad ya got more entrys in there...was looking real slow at my last glance....I am an Enigma fan still and will keep it around I even like old polaris once in a while lol...but don't expect a video from me on that one....but I do look forward to getting back to a normal in my life and please donate any gift I may have won and place it in the Subsim kitty to keep this site on the sea....

Peace :ping:

I gotta throw my late vote in there too and go with Fate...great job...can't say I'm a fan of the German side there in SH but so be it...only thing I did not like in it really was the Text size of the subtitles...would have been great with no subtitles at all in my opinion but if you must have them...make them smaller so they do not distract from the great presentation you made...I can tell even in German what someone is saying when a DD is bearing down on them lol :) Fear the Ping :ping:....Good job:up:
