View Full Version : Saved game issues
I have noticed a couple of issues when I load a save game:
1) Speed of boat is at 0 after loading, regardless of speed when game was saved.
2)PK doesn't remember settings from a saved game
3)I was approaching a destroyer, all stealthy and he wasn't noticing me at all. upon loadingthe save, he noticed me and took off.
Those are the ones that come to my head. I searched for a similar thread but didn't find one, so I'm posting away (gotta get the message count up anyways).
Anyone notice these issues or similar ones? Should we avoid saving submerged like in SHIII?
Thanks,

In the future you may want to operate under these few rules when saving a game in the SH series.
1) Save only on the surface.
2) Save only when there is no contact of any kind.
3) If saving after an attack ... give it a few hours (game time) to clear then save.
I have found that when I do the above, my games work well.

if a destroyer noticed you he would run down your throat not run away lol
he was more likely running for some other reason or just changed direction to go back to his patrol area
Thanks for the tips.
As for that destroyer, it must have been a novice. He was at 0 speed when I was approaching him. Had to save game to put my daughter to bed (duty calls). I reloaded game later and the destroyer went to slow speed and started a large circle pattern like he was searching for me. His AOB was such that as soon as he started moving I was in his baffles, so he couldn't really locate me. He started a large search circle. I noticed constant bearing on the sonar so was getting ready to shoot him when the little black sinking ship symbol shows up on my map! He crashed right into a dock!
Earlier he stood out of the harbor (2000yds +/-) and let me sink all the ships in the harbor w/o investigating or moving. I would move into the harbor, line up, sink two ships, exit harbor to make another approach, sink two etc. He sat there at 0 speed the whole time! So, I figured why not get rid of him as well. Got real close, 500 yds, and was getting ready to shoot him, and well, you know what happens next! He was almost mine! It would have been my first destroyer!
Number one is always true--not a bug--a safety device by the developers. Also, you must tell the crew to resume course after coming out of a save. If you just put on power the boat will continue indefinately in it's current heading.
I ran into that one last night.

starting up my last saved game only to have my driver constantly saying "passing thermal layer"--i was on the surface.
finally got him to shut up by diving and resurfacing.
also have gotten random "taking damage" shouted upon re-loads of previous saves.
each save seems to come with its own unique package of re-load issues :damn:

taking damage on reload means you were too close to something, too shallow, or you were not surfaced when you saved
only save on the surface and not near any objects, also do not save if you are getting the shallow water warning icon or if any AI trafic is reported.
after a save you will reappear somewhere close to where you were but not exactly, you can be from 1/4 mile to up to a mile away from your last position and if you were under water you can find yourself hitting bottom and taking damage.
Mheil,
Why not do what I do? I place the game on pause. And if I go away for awhile I leave it on pause and hit the windows button on the keyboard to reduce the screen to the bottom bar. As of right now I have the game like that at home, while I'm here at the office. When I get home tonight, I click on SHIV icon on the bottom, screen comes back up and I'm good to go to continue on with my patrol. Kind of risky in case of a power outage. But why not play the odds. Just watch the weather.

Beware shelling out of the game can also lead to issues. Perhaps the most common one is the increasing Co2 level even while surfaced.
I forgot about my rising CO2 level problem.:damn:

When I save a game I always go to the Nav. map pause the game then save.
Haven't had any real problems this way. I've saved submerged and even just
before I shoot a target when I'm trying out a new shooting method and not had
any problems. Picks up just where I was. Have to redo the firing solution, torp
depths, etc. but no crazy things have happened since I started doing it this way.
Maybe I've just been lucky.

The computer Iplay on is the family one and I usually get a limited chance to play-an hour or so a couple of nights a week; So i'd basically have to keep it runnig and mimized for days!
I have paused and saved the game and usually works fine. Never noticed my ship in a different position by a mile before! I have noticed that if I'm close to ships and they haven't noticed me they are liking to notice on a re-load.
Also, I remember in SHIII of having to wait and make sure a ship was sunk before saving. If it was not quite sunk and you saved, upon the re-load you would find the ship gone and no credit for it. Not an issue yet for me in SHIV, since it appears that the sink times are lot quicker so far.
When I pause, it is for a few moments. Answer the phone, let my labrador out, a head call, etc. To pause/minimize (overnight or longer), I make sure there is absolutly no contacts, sinkings, etc. Then beware of the glitch SteamWake mentioned. Also when returning to your patrol the watch crew may not go to their stations. Then it's save and load. You'll need to reset speed and also make sure to click on return to course. Other than that I think that all that is needed to preserve an ongoing successful career.
I'll have to try magic452's save on the nav map. I believe I've been saving on the con or one of the interiors.
