I downloaded GWX earlier today(took like 10 minutes with my connection ) I finally get around to installing it this afternoon and go to play. Choose the 7th/13th Flotilla, upgrade my hydrophone and fill in my crew slots. I finally depart from my base the second day after the game starts, in 1939. I get orders to patrol a sector thats nearby. I have 3 points on my map that say there are targets there. So I head to them, to find 2 ships at each one. They have the British flags, but they're showing up as green. Ignoring this I sink them anyways, plus two ships that were leaving the area. I sink up to 20-30 tons. Happy with my work I start to return to my base, which is about an hour away. When my watch reports two more ships, I check and see that they're British and sink them with my deck gun. But unlike the other 8 ships I sank, they didn't show up in my log and the ship sunk icon didn't appear. I continue on my way to my dock. About 10 minutes away from the actual dock part, I realize that I'm taking damage. I check to see that I didn't hit anything, but thats not the case. I slow down time compression to 1 and realize I'm being fired on. Before I can finally come to realization that its a German boat attacking me, I'm sunk. What did I do wrong to be attacked?

If you attack a neutral ship, all neutral nations will be hostile to you for 24 hours. Since you started the career in August 1939, the war hasn't begun yet, and all the nations are still neutral, including Germany. That's why they fired on you.

Next time wait until September.
If you don't want to wait, you can set the starting month in SH3 Commander.

If you start with the 7th? flotilla your orders are to sink the target ships in that vicinity. What I did was sail back to port submerged. Can't remember if it worked though.

You should hit Escape button and Return to base. :know:

But it's more fun to sneak back to base underwater. Good practice for late war attacks. ;)

When you put it that way, I guess you do have a point. First you practice targeting, and then evasion.

If their neutral will I still get the renown? Because when I died and it showed my career report it said I had -600 renown. I didn't know if that was because I died, or because of the ships I sunk. Also when I sunk the other two ships that weren't listed as Target ships, they sank but the marker didn't show up on the map, was I not supposed to sink these? I was sure they had British flags.

I had that same question 2 weeks agao and was told to stay out 4 24 hours after attacking!

This also happened to me on my first patrol in GWX3 the other day. Starting in the 7th flotilla in August 1939 your orders are "to sink the target ships, 2 ship convoy and perform shake down operations" . "You will recieve more orders on the 4th of August" it says.

So with those orders that is exactly what i did, i sank the target ships (English flags) the 2 ship convoy (English flags) and upon returning to base on the 4th after recieving orders to do so i got -650 renoun for sinking the 2 ship convoy (Cheers for that i thought) but then my campaign went totally screwy after that and i'm just about to start it again after a reinstall.

So you got negative renown for it? Thats funny because after I sank 4/10 ships I ended up sinking in that mission I did a status report and was told to keep up my good work.

You guys must have sunk something other than the target ships, because your renown should only go down to about 1500-ish.

And you'll come to love BdU in a few weeks...

Why does pre-war start so far before the war? Its a month of doing nothing much.

Ah well, lets me catch up on my reading.

After the 4th you will get a message from BdU with some information on what to do. Dock at your home port, and your next patrol will start on August 30-ish, use that time to manuevre into a hiding place, even Scapa if you're daring enough (Though I don't think there is anything there at that time.)

Of course all this info was in the GWX 2.1 release thread so those new to SH3 wont have seen it

Yes the target ships are British but as its August 39 they are neutral
Everyone is neutral
Which is why your own side will fire on you
You start with higher renown in the 7th than the other flotillas to make up for the loss of sinking neutral ships
Of course you dont have to sink them just use them for torpedo drills etc

As the radio message says - esc to port on getting it - 4th IIRC
The days in port are set to 20 - unless you take damage which will add days - so if you dock on the 4th your next patrol will start 24th\25th
Enough time for you to get to your patrol grid before war starts
As was historical

If you sink the 2 ship convoy once the game classes them as finished but will spawn them again so shooting wont give you renown or a sunk icon
The above is often why ppl get no credit for sinking a ship soon after sinking a similar one in the same area

Upsides are your crew have one patrol experience and you can sometimes get no renown after first patrol which can be a real pisser if you sunk half the home fleet
Shakedown patrol avoids that

Using SH3commander you can always start in Sept if you like

Patrol 1 ended August 7th, and Patrol 2 started August 27th. When I got to my patrol grid of BF18, it was the 31st, a couple days after I can finally sink ships without getting in trouble. But new questions have surfaced.

First of all, on the 31st I get a radio message from Bdu informing that some supply ship has docked at some harbor and will be available for supply missions after Sept 1st. Is this actually modeled into the mod, or is it just ambience?

Secondly It was September 5th and I was on my way back to Wilhemshaven since my gas was dwindling. On the way I see a British boat so I sink it with my deck gun. Now at this point in time France is colored red as if they're enemies. I spot a French trawler and it comes at me as if meaning to attack, I dive and lose it. I surface and see a french merchant. I sink it in relatiation. When It sinks the ship sunk icon is green. Why is France red if I can't attack its ships?

I'm nearing my home port, but I'm still in the channel when I see another Biritsh boat, I sink that with my deck gun. I continue on the way to my port when my watch officer reports that he see's a British warship. It turns out to be a destroyer. Not wanting to be sunk I order alarm. The water here is only 39 meters deep. Since my ship is diving fast I tell it to level out at about 20 meters, but the ship ends up going past that and hits the bottom giving me minor damage. The one destroyer ends up being a group of 3 destroyers. I end up escaping without any more damage, but felt like a dolt for running into the bottom of the ocean. Should I have not ordered crash dive?

Shortly after the last incident, I get a radio message saying not to sink British warships because it might embarras them. If I had sunk those destroyers would I have gotten in trouble?

Finally my last question. I know you can go to the Black sea and the Mediterranean with the GWX3 mod. In JGMES two of the mods are Black sea campaign only and mediterranean campaign only. If I do transfter to the mediteranean later in the war do I need to run the respective one, or are those two mods just so you can start in those campaigns?

Yes, the supply ships and milch cows are modelled into the game. Press F1 and you'll find a list of the ships and availability.

I surface and see a french merchant. I sink it in relatiation. When It sinks the ship sunk icon is green. Why is France red if I can't attack its ships?
France is an enemy since 3rd September 39, so there should not be a green icon. I bet you made a mistake identifying the flag, and sank Belgian or Irish ship. It's easy to do it in poor visibility or at night. I've done it more than once.

Should I have not ordered crash dive?
Crash dive will bring you to 70m, and if there's not enough water under you, no, you should not have ordered it. :D
When you encounter an ASW patrol, set your course away from them, but in such a way to show them your smallest silhouette. Depending on the circumpstances, do it on surface or submerge - but slowly to avoid detection.
Anyway it's better to stay away from the Channel. It's full of patrols and mines.

Shortly after the last incident, I get a radio message saying not to sink British warships because it might embarras them. If I had sunk those destroyers would I have gotten in trouble?
No.

Thank you, meduza.

Wow, it wasn't French :rotfl:. It was 3 stripes horizontal not vertical. I think it was the Netherlands. I forgot what the French flag looked like at the time.

I was in the channel because it was the beginning of the war, and it was the fastest and most fuel efficient way to return to port. And I was hoping for some ASW action.

Now I just need someone to answer my Mediterranean/Black Sea question.

I can't tell you much about the Black sea campaign because I never tried it. Only know what's written in the manual. :D

But the Mediterranean is included in the main campaign, and you can sail and transfer there without enabling any mod. When the bases become available, of course (late '41 IIRC).

What i found Highly amusing in my first patrol was after sinking the 2 ship convoy this obviously made me public enemy number 1 with all the neutral destroyer, PT boats and Q ship sitting in the Harbour, Fair enough! But the PT boats tried to shoot at me through the Destroyer and obviously hit it a few times with there machine guns.

This then enraged the Q ship and it started shooting at them for shooting at a neutral Destroyer, The Destroyer which was already shooting back at the PT boats took offence to the Q ship shooting at the Neutral PT boats and started shooting at the Q ship and before you know it the entire Harbour is engulfed in a close range shooting match with each other. Meanwhile I slink off out of range and sit back and watch the ensuing carnage.

Absolutely hilarious! Can you guess which ship won?? Well technically none did as they ALL eventually ended up sinking. But if you want a points based win then the destroyer definitely won the day as it managed to sink the Q ship and 2 other Merchants sitting behind it plus 1 PT boat, Second place goes to the Q ship that sunk 1 PT boat and the Destroyer with the PT boats coming in equal 3rd for damage done to the destroyer but no actual sinkings for them.

I think the PT boats are actually called Schnell boats but not 100% as PT boats were American IIRC.

Yeah, the AI will recognize any ships that hit friendlies to be rogue, including honest mistakes like that. It works out for you though.

Are you running any other mods? Merged campaign was tested pretty thouroughly and was passed with a clean bill of health.

I was running the Advanced effects(I think thats its name) that also came with GWX. Turned it off and the merged campaign still crashed my SH3. Although I'm going to try it again today.

Okay, turned on merged campaign today and loaded up the game and it worked fine. Didn't really take longer to load although my game was slightly laggy, but that just might've been because it'd been awhile since I last restarted my computer.

I found this thread after searching for it when my own too-brief 7th flotilla career ended in fratricide.

Man,that stinks! I mopped up those target vessels, on orders, and then to get sunk by my own guys?

It seems like there should be some way to fulfill the mission requirements without being killed. After all, you get to sink target ships in the naval academy - you even get renown - and you don't get shot at. It seems something similar should be possible in GWX.
