Hello Kaleuns!

I've been lurking around the forums for a while now and decided to post about my very interesting 2nd GWX patrol in 1939.

I was lurking around BF18 in U-45 and things were going well. After using up most of my torpedoes I decided it'd probably be a good idea to relocate to an area a bit closer to home. I headed north, around Ireland, and then east along the coast of Scotland just west of the Orkneys. And what, to my surprise, should appear? Why, the HMS Hood... ALONE! :arrgh!:

I only had 3 eels left in the bow tubes and one in the stern. The Hood was moving fast at about 3km range and a 45 AOB. Since I didn't have time to reposition I just went ahead and fired all 3 bow tubes with a 2 degree spread. To my surprise, 2 of my eels hit! One detonated below her keel near the center and the other detonated right below her screws. She quickly came to a stop and I turned my stern tube to bear. My last eel detonated below Hood's keel towards her stern and she started listing. About 15 minutes later she sank down to the crushing abyss! (well, I guess technically it wasn't that deep)

I was so excited I didn't even think about it.

Though, I tried it again recently on another career and I've noticed that the Hood leaves Scapa Flow sometime around the 13th or 14th of September, 1939 and heads west along the northern coast of Scotland towards Loch Ewe. So if you time it right, you can catch her all by herself.

Welcome to the Hood Sinkers club !:rotfl:And to the Subsim, of course.

I also sank the Hood approximately in the same area. But she was with the task force, heavily escorted. Strange how you found her alone.

I did it again!

I started a new career using SH3 Commander (which is awesome, btw) and ran into the Hood in a task force.

That's the Hood, followed by the Renown and a couple of light cruisers. There were only 2 destroyers I could see, but they were on the far side.

I managed to sink the Hood and damage the Renown. I couldn't slow down the Renown enough to catch up and sink her though.

Still, a good kill in any case. :arrgh!:

Oh, just FYI. The images I'm posting are from my personal domain, plaguemonkey.org so I'm not bandwidth leeching off of anyone. Don't visit the site though! It's a Rick-roll. :D

:(

The biggest target I've gotten was a 15000 ton fast freighter. Never once seen a battleship in person in all my days playing SH3.

I must have some amazing luck with my new captain! :D

On my very next patrol I intercepted a convoy and look who I found sailing with them...

Needless to say, I ignored the rest of the convoy and attacked her.

Balz was born, or better said he became the way he is, after sinking four battleships in four consecutuve patrols :smug: :smug: :smug: :smug:

I had a convoy of 3 Battleships (Hood, King George V, and I think the Rodney!) and they had a 5 DD escort (Feb 1940)... I only had 4 torps left :damn: (DAMN) so I sunk the HOOD. Not that the number of torps would have mattered (unless I had a XXI) because they were moving at 18 kts so I could have never reloaded in time to try and hit them (or evaded the 5 DDs that came after me after the HOOD went down).

I give a detialed account in this thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=146951

Do you mean to say that Balz was not always Balz? :hmm:
