How many things do you guys think people have missed in GWX 3.0 (and earlier versions) because they didn't read the manual?

I don't think a lot of average players realize just how deep down the rabbit hole GWX really goes

there are so many things in GWX that the game could be played a hundred thousand times over and you would never notice because of a failure to peruse the manual once over.

so the poll question is:

How many special little additions to GWX do you think the average player misses out on because they didnt at least give the manual a half assed once over?

In many cases I don't think that it's a case of people being lazy & not reading the manual. It's 600+ pages long and there is a lot of information to be taken in at once (especially for new players). What doesn't help, and I've seen this mentioned numerous times here, is that SH3 is so system intensive that it "doesn't like" to be minimized so it isn't as if you can easily alt-tab the game to check a particular section in the GWX manual.

That being said I think that the manual is probably the best pc game doc that I have ever seen and I really do appreciate all the time & effort that went in to producing it (and the mod itself too).

I think the number of details missed depends on whether the player is new to SH3 or just GWX. GWX adds a lot of stuff, but I believe a number of the features were already present in stock SH3, but maybe poorly implemented or suchnot. GWX just brings them out, tweaks them and feeds them, gives them nice clothes to wear, and now the game is a much happier place to be. :p

well put

ill add about the length of the manual.

it is in PDF format, so lets say the player is playing the game and has a question about whether or not they will see whales and dolphins, when they might see them, and where the best places are to see them.

all one has to do is click the little binoculars to initiate a word associated search of the entire document.

its not that you have to read 600+ pages to find the information because pages that specifically mention whales and dolphins will be shown to you in a matter of just a few seconds.

Im not so much an advocate of killing off a weekend reading the entire manual from cover to cover... but a word search goes a long way to answering some very basic questions.

have i read the manual fully through from page one to page gazillion?

no.

will i ever do so?

probably not

but i have read a lot of the manual... more than half of it, and the search function is a highly valuable tool for quickly finding 100% accurate factual information.

EDIT: i guess another point im trying to make is that a player stands to miss out on a lot of the goodies if they dont at least scroll through the manual until they find something interesting and stop to read 4 or 5 pages of text once in a while.

I admitted I must have missed quite a lot of things in the manual. But wasn't it fun some times to learn things the hard way? Besides, what ships were available to Uruguay, or the Harbor defense of Salamis really weren't something I want to commit to memory.

I never knew about the Renown-class until I read the manual

It actually makes a great read whilst on patrol waiting for a contact to be found.

Yeah, next time we have enough paper I'm going to print the whole thing and read it on patrols. 600 pages should keep me occupied for several 128/256x patrols.

Or you could do what I did, print it at work. ;)

Well done that man, thats exactly what I did but i took it a step further, I printed 2 copies off as I like to leave a copy in the toilet too as I find this is the best place for me to study without interuption and I do like a good read, especially when I am getting paid to do so.

The other copy i brought home and placed in the toilet at home along with the 4 rolls of toilet paper I "borrowed".

I have now read 85% of the manual and consider it to be the best Game manual ever to be written.
