Ahoy, i have a question regarding promotions, medals and awards:-
Im now into my 14th Patrol in 1942, on return from patrols i tend to select the torpedo men and gunners for awards and medals and i have promoted my most experienced officers. Is this the correct way to manage your crew, all of the men seem quite happy in terms of morale but 90% of my Petty Officers and Seaman now seem well overdue for promotion when you look at thier experience levels.
Im wondering if these lack of prospects and medals for the more junior members of my boat will effect thier performance or am i just looking into the game too deeply?
yours aye

SH3 Commander (I've said that SO many times :P) will let you change your crew's stuff and do other cool things like make a personnel file for your captain, and edit patrol logs.
If you don't want SH3 Comander for some strange reason, you can always manhandle your crew cfg, though this is unbelievably time-consuming.

Yep.
To answer the original poster's question: No, being passed over for promotion or award does not have any detrimental effects on the crew. Rewarding them, on the other hand, does have benefits.
My policy is to award medals & promotions to officers first, then petty officers and finally, seamen. If you use SH3 Cmdr you can often squeeze a few more U-Boat War Badges out of BdU at the end of a successful patrol in the Crew Management section...

My first awards goes to the Engineering department, and then the Sonar/radio department. Hunting and evasion can't work well without them.

In my very early patrols, my one and only qualified radioman was very valuable, and it took a good amount of managing to keep him rested for the key times when I needed him.
One solution would be to award radioman qualification to a 2nd PO. Instead I awarded medals to my radioman as fast as available. Once he received the Iron Cross Gold, he no longer is subject to fatigue. Henceforth, he is always on the job in this very important post.

Of course.....using SH3Commander will also give you the option of 'no fatigue' which would enable you to concentrate on other factors such as....survival.

if you dont award the medals etc when you finish the patrol and exit the game can you make the rewards, medals etc via SH3 Commander or do you lose the rewards from exiting the game?

You will only lose the awards if you set out on a new patrol.
You can issue awards/medals at any time whilst in base with SH3 Commander.

I use the no fatague option. It's as realistic as any of the other choices.
Useing UBOAT ACE The Wolfgang Luth Story as a source the biggest problem a Kpt had with his crew was boredom.
Thats why besides drills he had many diversions to keep his crew busy. And they had plenty of time for rest.
It's not like they were running into a convoy every 15 minutes. :D
