I Personally Don't Know About Best But I Recon I Still Prefer The Hunt For Krazny October I Think It's The Confident Manner In Which Scott Glenn Commands The 'Dallas' And I Have Some wierd Attraction To All Things Soviet Except Their Economy And Politics. They Made Great Tubes For My Guitar Amps and really nice warm Ushanka hats that get me some wierd looks in my little east Central Illinois town.

Das Boot! Enemy below is a good film thought but Das Boot is in a league of its own!
Das Boot all the way. And if you're planning to get it, get the Original Uncut ~5 hour version. I know, 5hrs seems like a lot, but it'll fly watching it.

I like a lot of them, but I agree: The 5-hour 'Original, Uncut Version' of Das Boot is the best representation of life inside a sewer pipe, bar none.

Apart from living in said sewer pipe, Das Boot is the highest level of Submarine cinema, and quite possibly German film as well.

I tried to watch Das Boot once but I felt like paint drying would move along better. Iknow it's recognized as a classic, though
"yep." 'Enemy below' is right near the top if not there. and couple WWII vintage; 'Run Silent Run Deep'. for a hoot there's always 'Voyage to see what's on the Bottom as 'Mad' Magazine retitled it in my youth

Das Boot in the original German, not the redub.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was a terrible movie, not merely in comparison to the classic Das Boot but in comparison to the Dukes of Hazzard. The plot makes little sense at all, the science no sense at all and the submarine interiors are awful. Also the lead character comes across as an overbearing asshat rather than the loveable, take-charge guy the cast refer to him as, either due to bad writing or bad direction. Das Boot is Oscar material, VttBotS couldn't win a gonk at a fair.

For me that's exactly what makes it great. You experience the boredom, and the things the crew does to counter it. I hate 'action-adventure' movies, and am glad that we have at least one submarine move that avoids that trap.
The Enemy Below is one of my favorites, and one of the things that made me select destroyers as my ship-of-choice when I was in the navy, but the 'u-boat' interior is about as fake and as bad as it can get. As a chess-player's drama it is outstanding, but as a 'submarine' movie I would rate it a two at best.

Add another vote for Das Boot.

Agreed - I enjoyed it, but when the u-boat's commander would invite another crew member into his "cabin" to have a drink and a chat...

Me too, I just watched it a few weeks back for the first time. I really got into it.
I know I'm biased, but IMO submarine is a pretty good setting for a ghost story.

The part were the XO is looking in the mirror and turns away but the face in the mirror is still looking straight ahead is so creepy.
I thought it was a good movie for what it was made for.

As a connoisseur of crappy B movies (Mystery Science Theater anyone?) I absolutely love the 50's epic "Atomic Submarine", a stirring tale of battle beneath the Arctic ice as the latest US atom sub chases a dangerous UFO underwater. It has all the cheap Hollywood sub cliches, with the added bonus of 50's UFO movie cliches too. The alien baddy is pure class as well. If you even wondered where the Simpsons writers came up with Kang and Kodos, now you know!
In a way Das Boot has ruined normal submarine movies for me. If one of the old Hollywood sub movies came on (Run Silent, Run Deep - Enemy Below, etc) I used to sit and watch it quite happily, even though I knew it wasn't too accurate. After watching DB, everything else looks amateurish and cheerful in comparison; huge sparse interiors, cliched goodies and baddies, happy endings and so forth. At least Atomic Submarine is supposed to be crap, it doesn't spoil that. :DL

I have to vote for Das Boot. But, only because there is no US Fleet boat movie comparable to Das Boot. It saddens me to admit that there is no fleet boat movie that can come close to portraying an authentic war patrol. I can only hope that a realistic US Pacific Theater movie will be made someday. Perhaps relating the now declassified actions of some of the great patrols turned in by the hard hitting boats like Silversides or Drum. Actually doing Run Silent, Run Deep with CGI special effects and more closely staying to the book would be very interesting to me.

The book was actually quite an interesting read. I remember reading it when I was about 12 and the memory of it has stuck with me to this day. I don't know that it would be a match for Das Boot, but it would certainly be the best US sub movie from WWII.

You are correct sir! I have never heard of this movie but will check it out. I doubt I can rent one locally from the few movie rental places left here locally.

It Came From Beneath The Sea!
BTW congrads Frying Tiger, I just read the new Joe Buff movie will be filmed at Sonalysts. Can't wait for it, its been too long since there was a good modern sub movie.

Likewise, I do think this will be one of the incidences when I drag the other half to the cinema instead of the other way around.
