Mr Obama responded equally stridently.
"I think it's flattering that one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world started attacking me the day after I announced," Mr Obama told reporters from the campaign trail.
"I would also note that we have close to 140,000 troops in Iraq, and my understanding is Mr Howard has deployed 1400, so if he is ... to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest that he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them to Iraq.
sounds like you just got drafted Tarjak.:o Look at the brightside, there aren't any great whites there to get you.:o

I wonder if Obama knows we've only got something like 50000 in the entire Australian Defence Force? , that's the second time he's made the same comment , you'd think one of his advisors might have told him after the first time.

Our lovely friend Mr Obama suggested then, that australia should contribute 50% of its entire military forces to Iraq. leaving a country this size to be defended with 25000 people, a mixture of reservists and permanent members, and trying to fit in leave etc around that?
the US army has more than a million to draw on, how about mr Obama go and send 50% of them to Iraq, then maybe we'll follow your lead.
Dolt.
I can only hope that now his views have been changed slightly, given his transition briefings.

And America is screwed starting 1/20/09!!!! I can not wait to leave and go to Germany. I hope to intern in Australia soon as well. As far a way from America as possible atm.

I recall a post here that the Aussie military took a long Xmas vacation with a skeleton crew to protect the country.

The navy is not huge but forms a very important part of the ADF. More info here: http://www.navy.gov.au/Main_Page

Err, I don't think Obama was actually suggesting anything, it was just a way to tell Mr Howard to shut the f-uck up.It was a poorly thought out way of saynig it, but very diplomatically couched :p

I apologize on behalf of my countrymen for our future Presidents statement. Australia's commitment to the war on terror is not in doubt.
Wow a Frenchman quoting Bart Simpson. It MUST be true! :o

I think New Zealand already missed that chance. Their armed forces reached peak strength when they were augmented by Lord of the Rings extras. The subsequent demilitarization following the completion of the film has crippled their offensive capability.
