View Full Version : One p*ssed off Black Swan...
Yesterday I pulled off what I consider to be my best convoy attack ever. We were sailing in CO 42 around 1:30 (game time), Oct. 1941. The moon was full & the sea was calm (1m waves). My lookouts spotted a 3-ship convoy: 2 Coastal Freighters escorted by a single Black Swan at about 14,000m. We raced towards it & got to within 2500m then submerged. Slowed to 1/3 to avoid detection. Targetted the first freighter with a T1 set to 8m. That torpedo detonated midships & looked like it did some major damage so I went for the 2nd freighter. Hit her just below the bow which was enough to sink her too. While I was going after the 2nd freighter the 1st one exploded & sank. Now the Black Swan springs to life and starts looking for us; guess we spoiled their peaceful Mediteranean evening.:D After about 20 minutes (real time) she gave up & sailed off.
Still using GWX 2.1. Hopefully the mailman brings 3.0 this week. I've been reading all the posts & I'm looking forward to it.
Good job obliterating that convoy! Not a large one, but still it's good to see the escorts going home without the ships they were supposed to protect.

Thank you.:) Although they were only coastal freighters (would've been nice if they had been something bigger) I like to think that I may have cost that Black Swan skipper his command.:D
Actualy the coastal freighters are my favorite ships. Always go down after one torpedo hit, with a big kaboom. :D
Continuing the same patrol I hit & sank a 12,000+ ton large merchant that was very heavily guarded by 3 Black Swans. She must have been carrying someone or something important to have that many escorts.:hmm: This time it was much harder to evade them; they kept me down for a good hour or so before they finally gave up. Finished the patrol by destroying a Black Swan (the last ship in a 4 ship convoy; the merchants were too far ahead of me to attack them without putting my boat in a very dangerous position).

I came across a small convoy like yours, but I sank all of them including the escort!:arrgh!: Can't waste gift tonnage!

Should be reading of your GWX3.0 convoy exploits shortly ;)

Always? How come I always seem to meet the exceptions?:shifty: (2, 3 of them any way)

Always? How come I always seem to meet the exceptions?:shifty: (2, 3 of them any way) I wouldn't know, but almost every time I hit her, she would sink immediately. Only a few times she took some time to go down. It seems that the stern is her most vulnerable part.

Same here, the one coastal ship [Coastal tanker] I've seen so far took several hits to bring down.

Bah, I'm sure he comes up with an idea.
-Where's the merchants you were escorting?!
-What merchants? Did we have ships to escort? All I know is that there were a couple of ships following us around for awhile, and then they just vanished...I thought it was a bit strange but I ignored it;)

Jim was kind enough to offer to send me a copy after I'd asked if anyone would be willing to send me 3.0 on disk. I have dial-up & it would have taken days for me to get the mod. I tried to keep quiet about it because I didn't think that he'd like fielding a bunch of requests from other people asking him to do the same for them.
Started a new 3.0 Med career today. So far I've sank a Black Swan in CO51. She was leading 4 other escorts (no merchants). They were really p*issed when she sank. Had us in the centre of a "wagon wheel" for some time with searchlights blazing, starshells & depth charges: the works!! I really didn't think that we were going to make it but we got away safely. Destroyed an ore carrier in the same grid square about 6 hours later. So far I have 10,000+ tons which isn't a bad start for a Med patrol...

*shudder Dial-up...
The Med is pretty high-risk for its shallowness, but high-reward for the sheer amount of warships (Big juicy ones) plying about.
Anyways, good luck. Remember that Frigates, Destroyers, and coastal freighters all go down with one eel! Good hunting.

Yeah I know. I've had it for about 6 years now. The only reason that I've kept it this long is the price. Going to talk to my cable provider & see about getting a bundle package. I just don't want to get stuck with a bunch of garbage tv channels that I won't watch.
That's one good thing about escorts: they're pretty fragile...:D
