View Full Version : Aircraft seeing boat under water
I know there is a thread dealing with this bug but I cannot find it.
I am playing OMv6, but have noticed this with TMO while playing Americans.
The problem is this. I spend a simulated day under 100 meters of water, and when the night comes around I go to periscope depth, and check for any unwanted friends. Well I see a Liberator headed toward my boat so I dive back to 100 meters, and stay there for two hours.
Following this I return to periscope depth, check the horizon only to see the same plane pestering me.
Down again, but this time I hit F12. Two hours after I dive back down he is still there, AND tracking my boat as if I am on the surface or at PD. I did not know that Liberators had MAD booms, and sonobouys.
I have seen something about this nonsense, but cannot find how to deal with it, aside from duking it out with guns (which has twice resulted in the destruction of my boat.
The plane never saw my boat on the surface, it only homed in on my SUBMERGED boat. There has to be something to do about this.

The periscope could be detected by the radar, and in this case the plane can orbit some time above the water waiting to the sub if he need to surface.
for this the plane is considered the worst enemy for a submarine. and in the late war planes have sonobouys.
Uh, but I said I was 100 meters the whole day. That is 87 meters below the maximum extension of the periscope. So no periscope wake for them to see, only ocean.

Duci, endorses "war is hell" death wish, which makes the game frustrating. The Evil Bees can be reverse engineered, but Duci is jailbird on this forum. UBI forum might get you an answer you might not want. I live with it ,& cuss his soul regularly.

If you use the exterior camera, you can quite clearly see a sub below the surface to around 80 ft. or so; realistically, it would have to be on a clear day, with light and sea conditions permitting, the plane would have to be an elite crew and they would have to be flying low and slow enough to spot it. On top of that, they would have to be beam-on or close to it in aspect.
Lots to consider, but this is one of the reasons that the Med. was so dangerous for subs. The North Sea, on the other hand, is so murky that you can't spot a sub from the air at periscope depth; except for periscope wakes, of course.
Ok. This is getting looney.
I forgot to mention that this was at night. Now please tell me how even the most eagle eyed airman in a bomber at 500 feet going at least 120 MPH can see a U-boat below 100METERS of water in the Atlantic.
Well, that being said, I think I found the problem. In the AI sensors the visual and radar was not effected by thermal layers. There is nothing to deal with the detected object being under water.
To my knowledge radar cannot detect below the waves and seeing an object under 60 meters of water is pretty damned difficult, and due to refraction visually aiming at it is not very likely.
So I changed the thermal layer setting to 5.0 as opposed to .01 which it was set at.
Suprise suprise, no more magic eyed bombers.
pilots would be able to see the sub at some shallow depths
To void the bees,attacking submerged
“Air” directory and remove the following files:
ADB_B5N2_Kate.sns
ADB_D3A1_VAL.sns
ADB_Kyushu_Q1W1.sns
AFB_A6M2_Zero.sns
AFS_F1M_Pete.sns
ALBS_G4M_Betty.sns
ALBS_H6K.sns
ALBS_H8K.sns
These.sns files have nodes, that you can axcess w/SD3Editor determining depth,& range to detect. I worked w/Akbar on an ASW mod for 1.4. He did not want to alter nodes so I pulled out of the project. In testing altering nodes proved to deminish ability of A/C. if you do a search for Akbar you will find Thread. LOL

 Thanks for the info Donut
Do remember to deactivate mod before alter. PM me if you all want to persue this, I would like a SEA folder w/.tga ship shapes back ,.dds dots removed. Then I would like to get rain range down,or up to 500 yds. TMO .Is no fun:yep:

Also remember that the unwanted effect is a very rare occurrence. Sometimes we have to put up with small annoyances to get the big benefits a mod, like TMO, have to offer. I believe that Ducimus' evil airplanes that can see you below the surface are a work of genius. Yes, VERY infrequently they will find you below the surface at night or at an unrealistic depth, but that is the price we pay for pure genius the other 99% of the time.
What the evil airplanes do is make you reevaluate the way you play Silent Hunter. No longer will you be spending the day under water because it just isn't safe. It wasn't safe in real life either. I call it the ostrich strategy. You are blind. You can't see anything. But they can see you. Means you're safe, right? I have been seen below periscope depth maybe once in several months of playing and I think that is a small price to pay for the stark terror of airplanes that are dangerous even when there is no way you can know about them. I like 'em!

a year ago I got this great mod for SH4 that made the water live again, move perfectly, etc. I recently had to reformat my hard drive and I lost that mod because like a stupid I didn't copy it onto a disk for safekeeping. Can anybody help me out with this?:damn:

I think you must be speaking of "Living Breathing Ocean". This became known as "ROW". The continued work is now known as "PE 4". There are now two main visual mods you can check out in the mods forum. Look for PE4 and EE 5.0. Both are good, check and research the threads.
