Scorpion Down! by Ed Offley

Hi Guys! New Year, new email address, and new forum name! (can we say lost my old password? :oops: )

Anyways! I've just read an interesting book by Ed Offley about the sinking of the USS Scorpion in 1968. I was wondering if anyone else has read the book and how it compares to the scenario put forth in the book "Blind Man's Bluff.."?

Was that you're review, Subnuts? I agree with the reviewer that the book Scorpion Down does seem to have some issues with it, even after I was done reading it. On one hand, the author keeps reminding the reader of the whole secrecy issue behind "the Silent Service", but then everyone from the Pentagon down to the wharfside seems to drop all this incredible evidence in his lap, over
and over again. As far as the "bombshell" goes, even that has an issue.

In my limited exposure to the military system (ANG), we were given "Secret" clearances with instructions to keep our eyes and ears open and our mouths shut. That clearance was needed due to some of the offensive systems we worked on and their service publications. I can't see anyone walking into any service school and showing supposedely "Top Secret" files to anyone not cleared for those items
specifically.

Thirdly, I can't see the Soviets gunning any of our military units on purpose without starting an incident that would be all over the press immediately. Even back then, historically there were other military, educational and research operations that had access to passive sonar capabilities. Not to mention all the other countries that have modern navies like ours. (GB, France, Etc.).
