View Full Version : IJN sonar parameters
I was reading this thread
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=104377&highlight=sonar+capabilities
on sonar and I'm wondering how much (if any) of this applies to SH4? Specifically, I am curious as to the parameters of the active search cone and whether you can travel under it or outside the width of the beam to avoid detection. Is there another thread that discusses this with respect to SH4? I tried a few searches but didn't come up with anything other than the above link.

Yeah, it is pretty much the same in SH4 (if not exactly the same).
Ducimus made a similar thread in SH4 explaining the parameters.

like tater said, its the same as sh3
with a few exceptions all the rules that apply to the AI in the game for sh4 are pretty much the same as they are for sh3
Ducimus shows the active sonar penetrating to a little over 300'. So, if I stay below this I will never be detected? This makes avoiding detection way to easy if you have the depth to do it. Why has this not been brought up in destroyer avoidance threads (at least the ones I have read)? I tried searching for Ducimus posts on this subject in SH4 but came up with nothing like the link in my 1st post, anyone have a link? Trying to read all of his posts would be a full time job! He seems like a great guy to have as a resource in this subsim, it's too bad he felt like he had to leave.*

300 Meters.
My bad...I wasn't paying attention, never played SH3 and don't think in meters. So, you can't get under it. Did Uboats have a much deeper max depth? Cause Ducimus shows them getting under the cone at 230 M and states "Again, the obvious answer to late war sonar is,
"yes, Deeper still!""in ref. to the 300 M later war IJN sonar cone. In spite of my screwing up this theory of mine I have been finding that if I go way deeper than the thermal layer I lose the escorts easily i.e. if the thermal layer is 150' I go to 350-400'. I used to just go 10-20' below the layer.

In the stock game the thermal layer is made of titanium. Try TMO or RFB.

I'm using SH4 v1.4 + TMO
