Greeks and French thwart wood by pirate hijackings. (http://africa.reuters.com/top/news/usnJOE50107I.html) However, other hijackings continue. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090102/ap_on_bi_ge/piracy_15)

I have to wonder if they raise the Jolly Roger Battle Ensign just before attacking. Or because they aren't European pirates, they use other more regional ensigns? Or symbols of faith?

I'd like to hear/read of a fighter aircraft destroying a 'confirmed' pirate vessel with ASM ordnance.....just to give the rest of the buggas something to ponder on before making any further attempts.

Never seen a boat yet that could outrun a jet fighter on an open sea http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6172/a1151bj2.gif

You watch too many movies.

They don't raise ensigns any more than bank robbers wear little black masks and stripped shirts.

Nonsense, there are maritime rules to follow

I mean, everyone follows the rules...right?, right?

You never know . . . but wouldn't it be funny if they did, more of a haha . . . we're just kidding we're fishermen . . . then . . . haha, we weren't! :arrgh!:

But given some of the more extreme forms of Islam which some may practice, one would wonder if it may happen that one day during a piracy event, the attack vessel flew a flag praising Allah. Not saying that all muslims are pirates. However, I wonder whether it has happened, or might happen in the future.

I doubt they would want anyone knowing who they were. I think these guys are just out trying to make a quick buck by hijacking ships and their crews for ransoms. They know that Somalia is so screwed up they can operate without local opposition. Like Port Royale in the 1600s. They don't seem to trying to make a political or religous point as far as I can tell.

This isn't about religion at all. It's about cold hard cash.

One of the larger vessel taken recently was Saudi. The Saudi flag has Allah's name on it (Which makes it A Big Deal) - And statistically speaking, it is pretty likely that some of the crewmembers currently held hostage are muslims.

We're not talking Sinbad or Jack Sparrow here; we're talking muggers with machine guns and rocket launchers. Less Sid Meier's, more GTA without the ESRB.

No Pirate hats for them then! But can we still hang them at the gallows? Oh wait, most jurisdictions consider that cruel and unusual ... well I guess they'll just have to be mortally shot while they are attempting to board or when the vessel is brought under lawful control.

Islam tends to be quite firm on stealing. All that business with hands.

The poor pirates. If only someone had told them that they only needed to point a weapon at the french ship and they woulda run up the white flag.. the pirates could've had themselves a warship to play with!

Frankly I don't understand why there havent been attacks against the pirates yet. The UN and the Somali "government" have approved it, why is nobody swooping in with Cobras and napalm?
