And this is my story, which took part five minutes ago:
I was sent on a patrol at some grid near Miami, (you know, some strings were pulled, some schnaps were going around, so the HQ sent me there, along with a good weather.)
Now, at some point a US Navy balloon was spotted.
I fired one heavy flak round but i decided to let it approach so i'll enjoy the explosion.
It came at about 1km so i let my crewmen to send it some led but nothing happened!
I fired at it myself too, but again nothing.
Nothing on the balloon itself, nothing at the cockpit, nothing at the engines...
Well, it didnt done any harm besides a couple of holes in the hull, but i would really enjoy it if i had seen that going b00m...!

Sorry, but the game just doesn't do certain things. Nothing other than ships and planes are destructable. In any case, the balloon wouldn't pop anyways, and it definately wouldn't explode. The Hindenburg was filled with flammable gas and flammible outer casing. Barrage balloons are filled with Helium, and they're too big to take down with a few artillery shells.

But those balloons DO go down, right?
Cause i fired about 400 light flak rounds, 20 heavy flak (the 1 round per 5sec thing)
and a couple with my deck gun.

The balloon will go down yes
Wont explode but gradually lower to the surface
Only one shot down in the war and the uboat didnt last much longer either

the balloons used by the USN were filled with helium, which is not highly explosive.
Many people think that if a balloon is shot with a gun it will explode violently with only a few hits... the reason most people think this is because of the Hindenburg accident.
The Hindenburg was filled with hydrogen which is HIGHLY combustible.
The only way to bring down a blimp in SH3, is to fill it with holes so all the helium leaks out.
problem is you have to fill it with lots of holes.

Just to ad something to discussion. My mainland home in Carson, Ca. is about a mile or two down the road from the Goodyear blimp.
Once when I got to ride in it which is rare and another story, I asked if people shot at it.
The ground crew guy said all the time.
Twice a day it gets a complete exam.

Wow, nice info, just when did people become stupid enough to try to shoot down a blimp?

Ever since the dawn of time. But back then, there were no blimps or guns.

Was a piece on the news here recently about an advertising blimp anchored over a particular beauty spot
So far been downed 3 times by shootings
Patch up and send aloft again
Nowhere near as big as those navy blimps though

Seems though it's the only other way to use your gun besides hunting and personal defense or going to an indoor/outdoor range.

At a flight school i once attended our aircraft would return from the East Practice area and descend to pattern altitude to join the traffic pattern for runway 18 at the airport that was located more or less in the middle of nowhere.
In the descent to join the pattern, several of our aircraft were shot at.
the owner of an ostrich ranch claimed the aircraft flying at "tree top level" were passing right over his house frightening his ostrich stock. so he took it upon himself to try and down some of our cessna 150/152s with his sim-auto rifle
apparently the trees around this guys house are either 1000 feet tall, or he has no idea what "tree top" really means.
The ranch was visited by nearly every "three letter agency" in the United States
no more shootings took place.
fortunately nobody was hurt... unfortunately there ARE people that stupid out there

...There are so many things wrong with that Ostrich farm owner I can't even begin to comprehend.
For one thing, how can he even expect to hit you guys?

I dont know.
I suppose a cessna 150 in the landing configuration - even early on would only be going about 80 mph tops.
if the slow moving aircraft was wallowing along low and slow at 1000 feet its plausible that someone with a simi-automatic rifle might get lucky with one or two rounds

Eh, you all know how Ostrich farmers can get.

 Ostrich farming is a legitimate field of work, I haven't tried it, but its apparently good enough to serve in Las Vegas hotels.

There is one in Wilhelmshaven, but unless you want the Tirpitz on your ass, don't shoot it down!

I must admit, I was :rotfl: ......:rotfl: to the death after I red this. gooood sens of black humor .
On two occasions I saw a blimp going down by itself. I manned my guns and waited to came closer, when it just fell into the sea. Wonder what happened? :hmm:

Can happen when aircraft - blimps too - are sent from an airbase usually after a report from another ship you are there
They seem to reach the end of their range and just end it all
Aircraft usually spiral lower and lower till hit the sea
Most odd
That explains it. I remember on one of those occasions I thought I was safe, out of the air cover range. I was surprised when I saw that blimp, even more so when the blimp crushed into the ocean. :D
