Thats a bad idea. I still buy CD's since all compression formats (Save FLAC or highly re-written engine near-lossless OGG's that are rare) are of terrible quality. I am listening to a CD I just bought as I type this.
I don't know what it is with people lately. Seems to be that they can't tell the difference between crappy quality and OK quality either these days. CD is not a great format, but to go all compressed formats is a really really bad idea.

The problem is, if you buy one of these files, keep it on your hard drive, and your hard drive dies... you just lost your music. Of course you should back it up, but even home produced CDr's don't last anywhere near as long as a professionally made CD.

Of course this is the alternative to people 'stealing' your CD's as has been in the past. I have bought one or two CD's in my life multiple times for them disappearing when I was younger. With the ability of people to make duplicates these days, no longer are the music industry profiting from stolen music. Maybe HD failures will compensate.

I stopped buying cd's years ago, not worth the trouble buying and getting not real red book cd's which wouldn't play in my stereo etc... To the hell with it, on the other hand there is a resurgence of vinyl, and between sacd and vinyl I prefer vinyl. Yestarday I was in big music store and they had a gigantic poster reading "2008 - Vinyl is back" !!! :yep:
It just amazes me that vinyl's comeback is kicking sacd ass.

I'm not a big fan of SACD and its 1-bit resolution where they try and compensate with massive sampling frequency but end up injecting noise when its supposed to be pure. DVD-Audio is a better format and is based on the tried and true PCM (LPCM) format. It is 24-bit resolution. It still has that 'warm' feeling that you can get with vinyl.
I do find it humorous that vinyl is starting to reappear again though. After all these years where Digital was shoved down your throat, more and more people are beginning to realize you live in an analog world that can't be reproduced perfectly with a digital environment. :smug: I do say that DVD-Audio does come close though! :yep:

I don't own a portable MP3 player of any sort, so I'll be using CDs for the forseeable future. Also, I would agree with August that I prefer to have something tangible when it comes to my music collection.
For the record, vinyl is tops. Bring back analog.
I love vinyl, there is something almost sacred about carefully putting the record on the player and positioning the needle.
As an old dj I use one of these:

I agree mostly.
I just listened to an MP3 I purchased from Amazon it was pure crap compared to even CD..
It is beyond stupid about how we cant get past Mp3 when it comes to audio. But I guess because the decode chip is just a few cents these days and uses so little power that they just can't fight 5 dollar Mp3 players.
There is nothing wrong with compressed audio if it is done right however, but Mp3 is not done right. It was designed to run through primitive equipment to provide audio for rather poor bitrate video. It cares little about the little parts that good speakers can replicate.
As for OGG. It is dead. There is supposedly a new version made by fans that is supposedly 2x as good at compressing while maintain the little things but the whole group seems to be dead. Right now Speex is used more than ogg.

I'd have to disagree with that. Go look at the radio stations even - plenty of ogg, no speex. Ogg can be made to sound better than anything up to FLAC. Speex is not an audio codec designed for music. I've yet to see any music for download even on bittorrent that uses speex.
So where did you pull this idea out of?

Pretty much agree with much of what has been said here. I continue to buy CD's and have a large collection. I will continue to buy compact discs until a better format succeeds it. :yep:

Look at DVD-Audio, and to a lesser extent, SACD.

Ah, why take away CDs? They're great presents if you run out of ideas! I myself got Abbey Road and Born in the U.S.A. this christmas. Great to have with the album covers too:yep:

Out of the many many programs, games, servers that use Speex compared to the few that use Ogg.
Tell me how many stations of Live365 use ogg
Tell me how many stations of Shoutcast that use ogg
And then tell me how many use AAC a LESSER known codec.
There is little reason to use ogg unless it is this new 2x better version that from what I can tell is not official and not supported by much and damn sure not in the relatively few players that can barely play ogg as it is.
Being "Open Source" Is not enough to get used anymore. They had a chance to improve and perhaps be an alternative to MP3 when the lawsuit wars erupted but instead they just faded.
Speex is far more used than ogg. Just about all voice servers that are worth the time to connect are using it over GSM.

Still prefer the CD but sometimes purchase online and burn to disc for posterity anyway.

More than just the cd vs vynil vs digital I find the whole trend towards 'virtual goods' disturbing.
Ill be honest though I have bought direct to drive games but the first thing I do is burn them to a disk. The only reason is that it was not available in the stores.
There was a time when you could judge a games value by the weight of its box. ;)
Sorry I dident read the article but Ill guess that the arguement was made that CD's are bad for the enviroment.... Am I right ?

I use Rhapsody for my music. They keep a file of music purchased. I reformatted my drive. Loaded up Rhapsody and all my purchased music was loaded to my drive. I had no issues with it and no back up needed. I do prefer CD over the MP3 player. It won't be long until CD is a thing of the past. Look at the history. Reel to reel, 8 track, cassette, CD...mp3 next.

Its gotta be the Vinyl for me,love that scratch sound, real Bass too,
mind you I've gotta pretty nice Vinyl 12inch collection,
over the years,as a Retired Dj,
Happily settled now,I've had enough of those late-nights,
Old Djs Should Retire,Or pass on their experience before doing so,
to a Younger Dj.
Nothing worse than being at a Party with an Old Man behind the Decks,
He's wearing an ear piece,
Ask him to play a Request?
