View Full Version : Rating Japanese DD/DE ASW (sensor) capabilities?

Greetings all,

I am actually playing SHCE, but my question is general.

I wanted to compare various Japanese DD & DE ASW (sensor) capabilities. Sadly I couldn't find anything very useful on the Web. Guns, DCs, and throwers are fairly easy to get, but nothing on ASW sensor capabilities.

Would anyone happen to know a good Web site for this?

Thanks.

How did you come about finding this little treasure! I hope that they have a copy for posterity in the Library of Congress, that is quiet a find.

Tater has his finger on all the good stuff.

While interisting enough I dont believe alot of it really relates to the game.

You may have been asking just out of curiosity but...

As far as the game is concerned (depending alot on which mod's your running) there seems to be about 3 classses of pickets/destroyers. Youre clueless noob's, then the moderatly capable dangerous but avoidable/escapable, Lastly the uber elite... good luck if you run into one or two of those.

Of course some ships have sonar while others dont. Also the quantity of DC's and of course guns varies. Other than that I defer to the previous paragraph.

The Uber's can be escaped but it can take hours and alot of luck :know:

Stock campaign is simply not worth playing, full stop.

If there was no way to mod the campaign, I'd have wanted my money back, frankly.

Happily, the mission editor is quite robust :D

Well, as I stated in post #1 I was playing SHCE. But there is no table or function in the scenario editor that ranks DD & DE in terms of their detection capabilities. So, I started wondering and searching the Web.

Perhaps it is the wrong question anyway, since thinking about the Battle of the Atlantic ... the more important question really is not class, but year. I guess the sonar equipment was such that DD & DE could be upgraded. Perhaps that was truer during war time due to urgency and the simplicity of the early sets. Of course from playing SC/DW, one gets the impression that once a class is laid down, its detection capabilities are pretty much fixed.

So, which is it for you WWII commerce raiders: year or class that counts in terms of detection? (I also know that most games bump the AI skill level up as the game advances.)

Thanks.
