View Full Version : Losing rudder?

Ok, twice now this has happened to me. I get depth charged and my rudder gets blown off. I've been able to repair the other damage, but can't turn, so the first time I ran aground in the Aleutions. Currently, I'm heading for the west coast of Luzon and I don't think I'll be welcome. Is there a way out of this? Call for help, or somehow turn with the engine shafts?

No I'm afraid seperate engine control was not modeled in the game.
As is with running out of fuel a destroyed rudder(s) its game over.
Sorry:oops:
Only way out is to load a previous save or start a new carrer.
I'm goin' down

My boat has had its rudder shot off twice. It took me several hours to figure out that we were finished the first time it happened. It is the only time I have seen the Great White's that I modded into the game! Wouldn't you know that they would show up wearing Panama hats, pucca shell necklaces, Hawaiin shirts and bearing signs that said "Dinner Is Served"?
The second time we beat them to the punch, changed the name of the boat to Cromwell, and detonated it.

RANT MODE ON:
This incident, among others, perfectly serves in highlighting what probably is the most serious handicap / oversight of the game, namely the lack of individual systems control. It's of course true that this is mainly a tactical level combat game, but to call it a "simulator" when even the simplest of things such as steering with differential power are not implemented, is IMHO taking it a bit far.
Mods such as RFB and / or GWX are brilliant achievements, but even they can only do so much when the basic product is this incomplete and / or overtly simplified. What happens with SH5 remains of course to be seen, but personally I'm not at all sure anymore whether I want to shell out money for yet another rehash of ever-prettier graphics combined with the same retarded crew and porked submarines :nope: Hello UBI, you call it a sim you better MAKE it one as well!!!
OK, at ease guys, rant off

I hope that these things will be taken in consideration with the new SH5 (I'm not posting on the famous thread so RR will not be annoyed again with dozen of posts! :rotfl:).
It's surely disappointing to be close to the base but out of fuel and not be able to call for help and have to start over a new career.
Same thing for the rudder problem and the indipendent engines... as said, those little "details" are what make the difference beetween a simulator and a tactical combat game.

I thought as much. Had a great career going too - on this patrol took out four merchies and three destroyers in a single convoy I ran across. Maybe I'll try drifting topside and hope the wind blows me somewhere...:-?
If I get a convoy ahead of me I could go out fighting, at full ramming speed...
I always wanted to live on a south Paciific island....Luzon isn't that bad, is it?

hey, Luzon looks great. You can open your own mini-base so if we pass nearby we can get some fuel and torpedos? ;)
RFB fixes this as well as is practical within SH4's limitations.

I had read a thread somewhere where it was mentioned that with 'special abilities' these systems (prop shafts, rudders, etc.) can be repaired.
To me its just a rumor though as Ive never been able to do it. Maybe someone will pop in here and explain it to us.
As to fuel, when your out your SOL.
That is interesting if true (special abilities).
None the less, it shouldn't be. Another issue dealt with in rfb is the fact that a fleet type should never not have diesel engines. With 4, plus an aux charging engine, the chances that a fleet boat would be without power and not sunk outright is virtually nil.
Steering... well, it would be possible to be SOL if the rudder were destroyed, and one of the props was out of commission. That should be rare. Regarding the prop, chances are any damage would leave it working, but noisy. Course, staying on the surface, a sub could always rig up a rudder over the side, point the boat, then go. It would be ugly, but possible.

Well, I have a sea anchor - my aft torpedo room is completely flooded, so I wallow like the Exxon Valdez :rotfl:
I'll have to play with it a little tonight. 'Course, if I run across a patrol, I'm in a bad way - BUT I can hold depth (at a 20 degre angle!) if I'm careful - the depth gauge swings 15 feet at a time!

Make sure that...
You have damage control activated.
You have sailors in the damage control stations.
Your not at silent running.
Trust me it wont get any better unless you do the above :know:

I always designate crew to Damage Control on the first patrol, and replace the ones that don't make it. I like to use the anti-aircraft gun crews, since they can't hit anything anyway! They get backed up by a couple machinery guys, and one Bridge Officer for leadership.
Silent running? I'd start backsliding to the bottom if I did that. Gotta keep 2/3 or better to maintain depth. I'd love to dip under the thermal layer, but I don't trust her to hold together at that depth.....
I got two torps in the aft tubes that I can't do anything with - wish I could dump that extra weight. Tubes are too damaged to fire. THAT happened when I was surfaced in a rain squall trying to break away, and this tin can came outta nowhere and friggin ran me down from behind before I could dive. He blew up, though...har, har, har :arrgh!:
Ending up on Luzon isn't half bad, if you're lucky enough to be found first by a guerrilla group before the Japanese Army finds you, and if you keep your wits about you, you can still be alive to welcome 6th Army ashore when they retake Luzon. Otherwise, you can always join those starving survivors from Bataan.

Well, I tried a couple things with no luck. I tried drifting, hoping to get blown onto a different heading. Nada. I tried Back Emergency, then Flank - nothing. Just a straight line. I even tried to open the starboard torpedo doors, thinking the extra drag would help - couldn't do it, evidently without torps you can't change the tube selection. Since the last one fired was Tube One, the selector was stuck on that one.
My final resort was to dive and see if the bottom was close enough to gently bounce off of. Unfortunately, I had enough hull damage to prevent me from getting there - she imploded at 300 feet.
Interesting note - last night I had a flooded Aft Torpedo room. Today, it was completly dry. Does SH4 do damage repair during the passage of "real time"?

Ummm no, actually none of the above is really modeled.
As I said before evidently there is some speciality repair abilitys that can repair rudder damage but Ill be dammed if Ive ever seen it.
Pretty much broken rudder, broken prop shaft, dead diesel(s), (not to mention out of fuel) any of those and your screwed.
Ive been begging for seperate engine controls since SH2 but no luck. Perhaps in SH5. Who knows.
Just once I'd like to put starbord engine in reverse and the port foward and see how fast I could turn
