View Full Version : AI retreats when damaged?
I was approaching the merchant for a deck gun attack when I noticed she was escorted by a single torpedo boat. Despite this, I continued my attack and even hit the escort. I dived when I spotted approaching frigate.
When I escaped the frigate, I continued after the merchant (not very smart, I know, especially when playing DiD). I caught her and opened fire wen I spotted the escorting torpedo boat.
Instead of engaging me, the torpedo boat was running away, as fast as she could, leaving the merchant at my mercy.
I've never saw AI retreat before, usualy they would continue to attack me no matter how damaged they were. :hmm:

maybe the rudder had damage, don't think the AI are smart enough to escape :hmm:

I've seen this happen as well.
They will also veer off from an attack run when hit, even if they are about to launch depth charges.

Ive seen this, I think that ship has a random radius to travel until it has to turn around back on course.

I have seen this, I have averted attacking DD (bow torpedo hit) and I could escape (several times).
Interesting... Who ever said the AI is dumb? :D
It never happened to me before, probably because I rarely attack the escorts.

I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth, but I believe I did see something posted stating that if damaged badly enough, AI will attempt to leave the scene. I've seen it myself, where I put my last torpedo into the bow of an onrushing destroyer in an act of desperation. Rather than sink, the DD spun around and limped away.

Hey.. if my boat took a ton of shelling, and was on fire, I'd be running too !

They seem to be runing away when badly damaged and can't see you, but surface and they re-engage you :)

Last week in good weather i attacked a convoy surfaced near reykjavik
Their escorts came in waves and i fired back while my engines were running everything they had backwards. i shot off 4 destroyers the 5th one tried to escape but i hit his propellers and it was game over for him ! :arrgh!:
They tried to escape several times for me mostly because im a good and accurate gunner i guess :p
I am feared on these waters for showing no fear and engage them with my deckgun :arrgh!:
One day they will all run away instead of resisting ! :yep:

It can also be dependant on their ability to see/hear you (sensor wise) as well as their ability to fight (weapons systems damage).
