Well the hunt for red october is based on a real event however the unit in question was not a submarine but a krivak class frigate from the baltic fleet called storozhevoy, the incident happened in 1975 in the baltic sea some of the crew mutinied including political officer sablin who siezed command of the ship.

The storozhevoy was ordered to be sunk and a cover up put in place saying it was an accident however she was bombed disabled and borded by marine commandos and returned to soviet hands.

There is a book out called mutiny id like to know if anyone has red the book and if its a good read as i plan to buy it after xmas.

heres the wikepedia discription of the vessel and incident.
