Finally got this one going after stupid AI got me killed a couple of times.

I'm a Mladshiy Lietenant put in command of the 160th IAP. While the Nazis plough through Europe we here are having our own little war with the Finns.

Today we are to be flying CAP over our airfield. To be honest I'm not expecting much, the Finns didn't put up too much resistance and out I-16 Type 18 prevailed.

We ascended to 4000 metres and began our patrol. Over the radio I could hear the I-16s from Kronstadt circling over Leningrad. Strange as the Finns had never struck that far before. A U-2 was also off on a recon flight, alas we heard some calls for help over the radio and he hasn't returned. We believe he was hit by the 405's which turned up nearby. We quickly took our revenge but in the melee I got split up and the second Zveno took them out. As luck would have it a couple of flights of G. 50s turned up. Using my Rata's small turning circle I was able to line up on one and gave it a quick burst. They must be poorley armoured as he dived straight into the ground with no apparent damage and I saw no chute. The second of the day got a 2 second burst which lit his engine up. No doubt about that one. The third and final one for the day was quite quick and easy though I had to reprimand my wingman for shooting over my shoulder. I had 4 kills now, did it look like I needed help?!?!

After that we went after the bombers that had snuck in but by that time we were short on ammo so we RTBed. My wingman needs some lessons in flying, he followed me right down to the runway to belly land just as I was touching down. The Rodina can't afford to waste planes....

pics to follow...

My second sortie in charge. Today we are to babysit some IL-4's on a bombing mission near a Finnish town beginning with 'V' They say Russian towns are unpronouncable....

After taking off we circled to await the bombers but given we had about 16 of us up today I decided to go for an offensive fighter sweep. Better to engage the fighters before the bombers arrive lest we let one slip through. I do hope stavka understand my initiative and the bomber crews don't complain. I heard of another commander accused of cowardice and disobeying orders when he changed tack mid flight...rumours are the NKVD dealt with him. I shouldn't tell you this but all the NKVD do is cause trouble. It's hard enough to fight a war without some numbskull to incompetent to be a real soldier telling you how to fight. As if my crews don't know enough people who have been shot down.

Alas I digress. Cruising at 2000 metres we penetrated deep into Finnish airspace. We then heard excited calls on the radio and I saw tracer fire in the distance a bit below me. I was able to swoop down behind a J-8 and hammered him with a fw bursts before I overshot. Swooping back around I gave a good burst and shot off his elevator....after that he dived into the ground.....That made my 5th kill and onto the ace list.

I soon saw another J-8a and pulled onto his tail...Giving a good burst and maintaining position I set him alight as I flew off for the third and fourth kills. I do however have to have a word with my squadron. When someone is in firing position to wait. twice now I have sen tracer fly over my shoulder and today I clipped a comrade who ducked in front of me...

Till the next time.

Enough that you can't cross them...

Which is unfortunate as you guys are the ones attacking. :p

You mean the Winter War went the way it went just because Ruskies had employed Schultz to do their mission planning, which led to all the bridges getting destroyed? I think I've seen the pattern of the attacking side destroying bridges in some other campaign...

Oh I thouight you meant burning bridges in the metaphorical sense.

No bridges bombed, just lots of Finnish fighters finished if you see what I did there.

Dowly tell you what why don't you fly the Winter War from the Finnish side and we'll compare results.

Hmm... maybe I should. :hmm:

What skill you have the AI on? And how many planes per side on a mission? 25 or 50?

I have DCG set to random skill, and I set the wizard for more than 25 less than 50

An escort mission today. 3 SB-2s were off to bomb a factory near Vilisomethingunpronouncable...

My flight of 3 took off to clear the way. It seems the Finns have only got J-8As and to be honest the crews aren't great either. Having said that I only got one kill today. Set his engine on fire after a few bursts, but he still kepth flying around. Crazy Finns.....

I have heard there is a Finnish ace called Dowly in the area but we have yet to meet him. Intelligence call him "The Ferret". Well once he meets this Russian terrier he will have met his match....

I also have to speak to my wingmen about shooting over my shoulder...They cause more casualties to our own side than the enemy...
