View Full Version : Handicapped Parking Abuse At Its Finest

Even though it's been snowing in New England since at least the dawn of human intelligence, that doesn't stop people from panicking like a Category 17 hurricane is coming every time it threatens to snow.

I work at a nearby grocery store, and no one ever believes me when I say how busy it gets near Christmas. So I brought my camera and snapped a few pictures of the parking lot at about 11:00. It wasn't until I got home later that I noticed something in one of the photos:

http://i40.tinypic.com/2evufkh.jpg

Yes, someone actually had the balls to squeeze their car between two handicapped parking spaces, parking in a handicapped space and a no-parking zone at the same time, completely preventing the driver on the right side car and the passenger on the left side from being able to enter their vehicle. You can even see the driver inside the car, oblivious to the fact that I'd just caught him in the act.

People can be so considerate sometimes, can't they? First Connecticut Nazis, and now this. I think I'm going to live in the woods now.

It wouldn't do any good to live in the woods:rotfl:. I live pretty close to the woods down here, and observe the same kind of mentality. Before I had to stop driving, my wife was dropping me off at the truck stop where I parked my truck while at home and we saw a Georgia Power work truck (dually, no less) parked in the cross hatched space between the only two handicapped spots in the lot, rendering them both useless since his truck hung over on both sides.

When I walked in the door leaning on my cane and saw the guy chatting up the cashier, I politely told him that ,next time, he should just park in one of the spaces so he didn't (expletive deleted) up both spots. The jackass gave me a look like I was from Mars and continued to flirt with the cashier. If I'd have had a camera, I'd have taken a picture and sent it to GA Power. I can't count the number of people I've seen whip into handicapped spots and run into the store (and even the VA Hospital).

How about people who aren't even handicapped parking in the spaces and taking up half the sidewalk?

My grandmother needs a wheelchair due to car accident, and driving her around is somewhat depressing, not because of her, she's the funniest person in my family. Its because the handicapped parking spots nearest to the Community Center are filled up with idiot soccer moms who don't seem to understand that they are doing something wrong.:nope:

What have balls got to do with this?

Same here in Germany. Most handicaped parking slots are occupied by BMWs, Mercedes (what the hell is the english plural of Mercedes?), tuned Audis....
And then you see young freaks jumping out of them thinking that they are so smart.:nope:

Call the cops. They will tow the vehicle and fine the driver. You get to watch, laugh and point at their stupidity.

Yep, a coworker of mine got a $500.00 ticket for parking in the handicap spot. That will teach her.

The cops will only respond if the owner of the property calls them (at least here). My wife used to work at a convenience store where the owner routinely parked in the handicapped spot (his only handicap was mental) because he knew he would never get a ticket (unless he called in on himself). I used to see cops drive in and out of the store and never take a second look at his car even when he was carrying boxes of merchandise from the store to his trunk.

I hope it's not that way everywhere.

I'm not sure what the laws are around here in that regard. I've seen the cops issue and tow without the owner being around though. A picture of the car parked under the handicapped sign sent to the local paper or TV news might be one way of lighting a fire under their butts...

Can't light a fire under their butts, because then they'd claim they were disabled:shifty:

Seriously, lots of businesses here give blanket permission for the police to cite and tow, it's just some of the owners who are direly in need of a rectal craniotomy who won't allow enforcement (or, at least, won't request it).

Here in the UK you would be extremely lucky to get a response unit to attend an unlawful parking call.

Best ring in and say you are witnessing an actual attempted theft of a vehicle.....the response would/should be quick and on arrival the officers will sum up the situation themselves and blister (fixed penalty ticket) the windscreen automatically ;)

Heh, that's pretty messed-up. A little funny, but messed up.

I'm not gonna lie, though - there's nothing more annoying to me than going to a store with a full parking lot and empty handicapped spots. :damn:

Why would you claim the other two vehicles could not enter or exit their vehicles? There is clear enough room on both sides to drive a motorcycle thru.

Meh, I'll bite.

The whole reason that the yellow striped "No parking" zone is there is to give people in wheelchairs room to use the car elevator to get off. Because someone parked there, whoever's using the handicapped spot will be unable to enter their car, and will have to wait until the other guy comes back.

The handicapped don't use motorcycles

One of the few times I agree with August.

I am a courtesy clerk at a local grocery and normally around here people will say the hell out of those spots yet if I spot one of these yahoos I will not hesitate to write down the ID and contact management. It is the responsibility of management to contact authorities to ensure that these spots are left for the handicapped.

It is sad to see this because the people who use these spots are not "old geezers" They are extremely friendly people who half the time would rather ignore the fact that they have to struggle down a traffic filled lot rather than get someone arrested.

It is just a few rows.

And if you think you are having a hard time. Imagine how difficult it is to struggle through the entire lot because *******s think handicaps are nothing but old geezers. Now add to that how you can't instantly jump out of the way if some drunk or madman screams down the lot.

I parked my car in front of the woman's minivan who didn't have the sign and called the cops. They sent a tow truck. The expression on the womans face was priceless when they took the van away. hehehe.

I think that doesn't work over here. The parking areas belong to the super markets and are private property. The only thing I could do would be to inform the staff.:hmm:

ok, say that you send this pic to local authorities. Now here is what may happen:

He will hire a lawyer who will say, "My client was unaware of the fact that parking on this space is illegal as there was no such sign/warning board near that place".

Just like we need to warn theives that camera is watching them :D

I most seriously beg to differ, you should try parking in London Borough of Camden, they'd fine you for stepping on the cracks in the pavement.

Lawyers cost a lot of money. That to me would be as good as a fine.

when I worked at the local supermarket I used to take great delight going up to non-disabled people parking in disabled spots and pointing out they shouldn't be there, or the best one is the tannoy. You couldn't say the make or model of teh car but only read out the registration number. "Could the owner of car SY02 RUH, please come to the customer service desk, you're parked in a disabled space."

Going slightly off topic, once doing trolley duty I spotted two kids about 5 and 7 years old left in a car (no big deal) WITH the engine running....So I opened the door, shut off the engine and took the keys and got a tannoy made. The dad came up and was really pissed off...." I can't believe some people.

What is most annoying is when you get soccer mums who park in the disabled area when there is bloody child and parent parking spaces, usually closer to the door than the disabled spaces.
