View Full Version : Why are my frame rates low? Here are my specs.

Ok, I only get 15-20ish frames on the bridge or with the external camera. I am running TMO and RUIM high res. It's very pretty. I have crysis cranked and I get better frames. My system should be beefy enough for little old SH4.

Try turning off 3D Fog, that usually doubles frames for me.

Enviromental effects is also a big resource hog.
But hey 20 fps is not all that bad ;)
Im always amused when some one compares frame rates of this game vs that game. They are different games with different game engines with different demands. I only played the Crysis demo but had no fps issues either.

That is weird. I have a 3ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram and a HD 4870 (XP SP3), so basically a little more power than you do, and I rarely dip below 100fps with all options enabled and 4x AA in ATI control panel.
I recently reinstalled to make a video, so I run it at 1280x768 to let fraps record full screen to render in HD, but it runs very smooth at my screens native resolution of 1680x1050.
I think something is wrong with your setup somewhere, unless you have 16xAA and 16xAF at 200000x170000.:)
(Here is the video, btw, and fraps recorded at a solid 60fps throughout - almost

Have you tried a different driver? Also, try to disable one of the cores in by: ctrl+alt+tab, right click sh4.exe, set affinity, uncheck core 1. Some get more fluent gameplay by that.

Although there's nothing wrong with 20fps I'd expect you to be in the 60's or higher. You will find that SH4 puts about as high a load on your graphics as anything you'll run no matter now exotic it may seem.

Hmm, it's hardly unplayable I'm just thinking it should be a little higher. Granted I have the bells and whistles going but with 6 gigs of ram I should be higher. Granted it's just a 680i LT SLI motherboard with lower end ram, but still. Ok, I will mess with it.
I get higher frames at night and in fog if that helps.

I only have a 2.2GHZ dual core with 1 GB of ram and a 8800gt and I get 60+ on the bridge and with the external camera. However I am running Xp instead of Vista and I have done the nVidia tweaks for SH4.

Subchaser, what drivers are you running on that 8800GT 512? Your rig should be doing better than 20 fps. What resolution are you running at too?

I have the latest non beta drivers on 180.48. Resolution is the lowest, the 1024X768 one.

I dropped windows down to performance spec so it looks like windows 95 but it removed the jerkyness from SH4 and added some frames. 5-10 more. Doesn't impact other games though, odd.
You both have 8800s and the 180 drivers, I wonder if there's a problem with the latest nvidia drivers & SH4. Maybe try downgrading to the 178 drivers and see if that fixes it. If it does fix it, you should report the issue with the 180 drivers & SH4 to http://forums.nvidia.com.

I only use these because the old drivers caused SH4 1.5 to go blue screen.

I heard downgrading NVIDIA drivers was a pain, something to do with old driver bits staying and causing problems?

Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Guys, try the 178.13 or the 178.15 drivers to see if you get better frame rates. I'm thinking of going back to the .15s myself as I seem to be getting about 5 to 10 less fps with the 180.48s. But I also have 2 8800Gts 512s in SLI. So it wasn't as noticeable since 5 to 10 fps still keeps me running smooth in the 60s and 70s.
Also, you can go here: http://www.blackviper.com/
You will find some ideas for slimming and trimming your os to get the most horsepower out of your rig.
Hope it helps guys!
Subchaser, downgrading is no different than upgrading. Use the same procedure as would with an upgrade. You're gonna wipe out the previous drivers off the hd, and put the replacements on.

Driver Sweeper to remove old drivers from your system. Freeware. I use this before I install a new driver.

With Vista, I just go to Device Manager, and in the video section I pull up the videocard and uninstall it. It seems to work in Vista better than it did in previous versions of Windows. I don't get any warnings or errors from old drivers. Or if I forget I go here: http://www.evga.com/support/guides/vistaremove.asp
Just click on the Installation Guides to the left to see other things like installing drivers.

so when I un install the card.... does it still work. (Dont want to screw it up, vary expensive card.)

Oh, yeah. It will probably come up in 640 x 480 or 800 x 600, but it will still work. Windows will automatically load a basic driver so you can see the screen to perform the operations needed. It's just going to remind you of the old days. Like the old PIII setups. You're not physically removing it though, just the software.

What was the result?
Here are mine. I spent the last hour or so playing with nHancer. I put AA combined 16S. For some reason it doubled my frame rate and them some going to a much higher AA setting. It bounces from 30-50s but stays at least 30. I also cleared the AA compatability completely.
AA Combined 16s
Texture filtering = High Quality
Negative LOD BIAS = Clamo
Anisotropic Filtering = 16X
