I just finished a patrol that took me from Brisbane to Manilla. And from there to 108 nm ssw of the Convoy college.
Is it just me or is the Pacific Ocean rough during the month of January?
Due to massive waves, I could barely run my SJ-1 radar.
Due to massive waves, I could hardly dive.
I was shadowing a small convoy of three tankers and 4 Auxillary Sub-chasers. I was spotted and the sub-chasers turned to intercept.
I order periscope depth 4 times.
Finally, the only way I could dive was to order to dive to 165'.
January is a rough month in the Pacific!
BUt the good news is, I intercepted a Task force 100 nm sse of Manilla. I diliberately sank 1 Ise Battleship (Late war), 33,600 tons. And accidentally sank a second one.
I was informed of an approaching convoy. I turned due east. AS it turned out, it wasn't a convoy but a task force. I managed to creep in until I was 3650 yards from one of the Ise BB's. I figured I'd fire a spead of 6 "fish" from the bow giving the a good chance to sink it. Set depth at 3.5', medium speed, I opened all 6 tubes and fired at 5 second intervals.
2 minutes and 35 seconds later, I got the news, "Torpedo impact, torpedo impact,". Raising my scope, there it was, one Ise Battleship (late war) going down. Well, better safe than sorry, I dove to 350', ordered silent running, and turned due west. One minute later I got this tid-bit: "Torpedo impact, torpedo impact" torpedo missed, torpedo missed". I just had to check it out. I ordered ahead 2/3's and periscope depth. Raising my scope I saw it. 2 "fish" had sank one Ise, the others ran past it towards he second. WHen the first blew up, the second stopped while the escorts went all over the place looking for whatever had hit the first one.
Sometimes luck just follows you.
Go figure.
