Thought I would make a new thread of my experiences, of the game as a new comer, while I battle my way through the war, playing a Career set to Hard from Pearl Harbor 1941 in a Porpoise Class boat.
Ill update it as and when I come across notable, moments, ideas, and problems.
Hopefully some of my problems that get answered by you very helpful, and experienced Skippers will help others new to the game too.

I’m playing an original copy of Silent Hunter 4, patched to1.4 with no mods.

Obviously my decision to play on hard has not been without some research, and a little training.

The forums have been excellent for this. Ill start off by mentioning some of the problems I have faced during the initial training phase.

The manual that came with the game, has some very good and useful information but it also mentions things that have not been implemented in the game. I found this very confusing, and wasted a lot of time looking for things, that where not there. Searching these forums I found that they have been copy and pasted from Silent Hunter 3.

The first things I found strange was the lack of clickable nodes inside the working interior of the sub. I was expecting to be able to click on the chart on the Captains desk and it to take me to the Nav map station., just as you can the Radar and Sonar. The periscope also has a node to click on to look through it when its up, but not one to put it up and down? In short I was hoping I would be able to access all the boats controls from the interior to help with the immersion and feeling of the game but it was not to be.

The next thing I found myself longing for was a rotatable protractor for the Nav map (realy can’t understand why this was not implemented especially by now patch 1.4?) . I’m finding it very slow to convert relative bearings, reported to me by the ships crew, and from readings taken from the scope, to true bearings for plotting on my map.
A protractor that can be positioned over my location and rotated to the ships heading would make things loads easier. A tip though for other new skippers is to visit the sonar station. Round the hydrophone dial you have relative bearings and in the middle is the compass. Any relative bearing reported to you can be quickly converted to true by moving the pointer, and reading across to the other, and vice versa.

To be continued

Welcome and a small piece of advice.

Black font is very hard for alot of people (like me) to read.

Your being quite generous, frankly I found the manual to be next to useless.

Good luck

Some people here (me included) have printed and put together their own wiz wheels, that are used just for this purpose.

There is a printable USN and german version. In sh3 it was possible to include a working wheel, but apparently changes in sh4 make this more difficult.
