View Full Version : Harbor raiding, subnets and other stupidities.

I'm sitting outside of Cadiz after a re-supply from the Thalia...and I'm bored :rotfl:
The battelship Nelson is parked in Gibraltar harbor...and I'm thinking...HMMmmm.
I know this will restart the "harbor raiding is crazy" replies but...
1. How do the deep draft ships get in and out, with a fairly shallow subnet in the way? Does it ever get "moved" (the subnet)?
2. Do the other ships (merchies) ever come out of these harbors? I've been advised to "wait outside for the merchants to leave"...does that ever really happen??

In RL the subnets would be moved by harbour units
In SH3 they stay in place
For 2 depends
GWX starts no ships from directly inside the ports as no real space to do so for convoys so they start close outside
WAC say theirs start inside the harbour but not noticed that on the campaign layers
Besides SH3 wont spawn RND units within 25km of the player so you could sit outside all war and never see one leave
Move over 30km outside the port and the units will spawn and move

Thanks Big! I'm hovering between keeping my "Campaign" alive...or a little nail biting exitement? I've found a minute way in to Gibraltar...on the east side of the subnet. Is it worth the risk? Probably not. Will I try it anyway? That remains to be seen. Decisions, decisions. (This is GWX 2.1, BTW).

Yup, real nets opened an closed. That's how the Japanese midget sub was trying to get into Pearl Harbor when attacked by the Ward: following the target tug Antares into the harbor while the net was open.
Of course having the net deep enough so ships could pass over it but the sub would have to surface might work.:hmm:

There is a Theortical way to get the nets to move.
Tar Jak actually came up with the idea.
But I've not had time to give it a try.

I believe most 'nets can be crossed if your sub is surfaced...I'm not gonna try that at "The Rock"! :rotfl:
I may have found a small "nick"...the east end of the 'net doesn't go all the way to shore. However, the resupply at the Thalia did not allow me to choose type I or type II torpedoes...you get what you get, apparently. So, I'm loaded up with "obvious" type I's and contemplating an attack on a place I will have to wiggle into...and then get out of through the same tiny hole. I'm thinkin' not.

Can you spare a bit more info on this?

Actually, It's a bit complicated as to how to implement.
And to say anything without trying it?
Would be premature.
If TJ wants to comment.
Fine.
But I think it needs tested first.
But it is a BRILLENT idea!
In Gibraltar you can take your shots on Nelson from outside the sub nets, where there is still enough deep water to scramble if something goes wrong. Of course you need to be in clear weather and in a 16k environment, but if you meet those two requirements then you shouldn't have to worry about the sub nets at all.
Good hunting :arrgh!:

There is a problem with attacking a ship from outside the anti-sub net. Mainly you have to have the torpedos set so that they will pass over the net but will hit the amoured part of the Nelson. I've sunk my far share of capital ships but I've always hit the keel of the ship, (it took two well placed torpedos to sink the HMS Hood). The second is if they are the old steam torpedos the enemy will beable to move the ship out of the way, but if you use the electric torpedos it might bee different. If you are using the steam torpedos give your enemy no chance to get away! Move to at least 500m, select salvo, give the torpedos a spread of aleast 5 degrees apart and FIRE! Then in the confusion make your break.
Well. I've sunk the Nelson twice in Gibraltar... With steam torpedoes... In broad daylight... And I used magnetic detonators at 1 m below keel (not 100% sure, but I think it was 11 or 12).
In fact they did see the torps because they went right in the nose of some elco torpedo boats. She didn't budge.
Flaw or reality?

Can't have been past nets if you went 1m under keel...surely.
BTW....the Elco crew must have either been asleep or on shore leave

I wish I took a screenshot of this act of stupidity.
So I've been gone for about 6 months, finally came back and started fresh with a Type IIA in 1939. Assigned to patrol AN21, found nothing but destroyers for a few days so I decided to poke around the British sub base in that grid and see what was there. A passing destroyer caught a whiff of me (probably saw the periscope, I was too busy admiring the destroyer...don't ask) It came about and steamed straight at me with a bone. Seeing I didn't have much room to dive deeper (I'm in really shallow water...) I didn't do anything cept go to silent running @ 100RPMs. DDs bow drilled my conning tower and pushed me straight into the seafloor, and I lost all hands from that collision. Oh how embarrassing compared to my successes before my hiatus.:damn:

lol yours arn't the worst!
Playing NYGM v2.6, using XXIII. That boat is a decent one, having claimed more than 10000 tons of Allied Shipping. 7th patrol. Went to northern British Isles to see if there are any juicy targets. Uses 1024 time compression to cut time. At the later stage of war, destroyers are common around Britain, and the sonarman yells "sound contact. Warship. Bearing xxx speed xx" often. And I learnt how to ignore them since I am not found and attacked even if I am snorkeling at 6kt.
A sonar report appeared. I proceeded to neglect it. The red line on the screen gets closer and closer. In general the DD will go away but at this time, it rammed the conning tower. Grr :nope: all hands lost. and all these happened in 1024 time compression giving me no time to respond. Duh.
I should have retracted the snorkel and rigged for silent running. Grr...
