Hi everyone just bought SH IV after finally upgrading my PC to handle all the bells and whistles and whatnot, the game looks great and I've already started adding a couple of mods as I was getting bored with the Japanese escorts never being aggressive enough towards me. :)

Did a couple of patrols with TMO for 1.4, really liked the general feel, escorts nice and agressive, it's a real challenge now to take on a convoy!!! :rotfl:

I heard that RSRD for TMO adds more fleet actions and more realistic patrol assignments, so I added this with JSGME and while the missions seem better the escorts seem to have gone back to the brain dead numpties from the original game. :hmm:

So basically I have a couple of questions if someone could take pity on the newbie. :rotfl:

1) Is there any way to get the aggressive AI from TMO with RSRD?

2) Does RSRD model most fleet actions of the war, such as the battle of the coral sea? If I am in the area can I watch the AI fight it out? Does TMO not add any fleet actions?

3)Finally as a general gameplay question I'm finding it difficult to keep track of which ports/islands are in enemy control as the war goes on, the frontlines seem to change so frequently! Is there any mods which update your patrol map showing areas of enemy and allied control through the war?

Anyone that could shed some light on this would be most gratefully appreciated! :)

Im going to let the mod gurus answer most of these but I believe TMO & RSRD are mutually exclusive.

Also you are going to want to get the 1.5 patch sooner or later. I dont even know if there is a ver 1.4 compliant RSRD available.

Good luck have fun !

OH and welcome !

Actually its the 1.5 add-on Wolves of the Pacific. Its a must have and only cost like $10.00 in some places. There is no other way to patch up to 1.5.

Dont mean to hijack your thread but I was about to start one just like this....

I hust got SH4 (gold edition) as well, Im trying to like it but....

Vanilla was silly, really silly with the constant planes so I tried a few mods.

I tried the RFB mod but its a little too realistic for me... Not to harp on the guys that made that mod, they did a great job, however. Last night on my first patrol to Hokaido area I saw nothing but fishing boats for 2 weeks. Then I decided to enter the straights between the two main islands, I came across an old ocean liner. I put 3 torps into her, one at the front cargo hold and two along the midships area. She started sinking but then stopped when the water line reached the lower decks, the rear was slightly under water... thats it, she wouldnt go down anymore. I was then chased by two DD's for 1.5 days!!! I took the boat as deep as I could, 450' and they were still pinging me and dropping DC's on me like I was at PD! For 1.5 days I tried to evade them, they ran out of DC's and then just parked themselves near the more then half sunk ship so I couldnt even get close to finish her off, add in the fact that the TDC in RFB doesnt update the speed of a damaged ship if you're using auto target and the whole night was just a complete waste of time... (and yes I tried moving far away from the scene of the crime, surfaced and headed back to give the ship the coup de grace but before I could get close the two DD's pinged me again... starting it all over....

Sorry but this is a little too realistic for me. I only get a few hours max to play and spending that time evading two obviously uber DD's with nothing to show for it but alot of CO2 is nothing but frustrating. I know the way ships sink has been made realistic in RFB but I feel that in making the game more realistic RFB has taken alot away from gameplay, IE fun.

I tried TMO but its the opposite of RFB in terms of ships being sunk.... I got critical hits on everything I shot at, one torp one ship sunk....

I havent tied RSRD yet, what exactly does it change?

Also, isnt TMO a dead duck, as in whoever made it isnt working on it anymore?

I might just shelve this game and go back to SH3 GWX...

Help a frusrated player out...:-?

Welcome aboard Mates.

I am running TMO and RSRD for 1.4.
In the TMO readme there are instructions for more aggressive escorts.
You have to edit a couple of files. They have better detection abilities.

RSTD models more realistic ship movements. I have not encountered any
U.S. IJN engagements yet but I think they are there. ?????

Check the MODS thread. There is a lot of discussion on what each MOD does.

I'm with you J.V. Keeping track of what the Japs controlled is confusing and I don't
think there is a mod for updating Jap controlled areas. You just have to keep track.

Piggy Natural sinking Mechanics MOD is not available for TMO ( at least 1.4)and I
believe that is what they use in RFB but the escorts are not so aggressive.
Almost too easy.

Sink them all but Six and use them for pallbearers.

I just switched to TMO with RSRD, had a much better session last night, MUCH better.

I sank a Kongo on my first patrol out of manilla, got really lucky there. I read the intel report, headed to the coordinates they were estimated to be at and sure enough, smack dab in the centre of that sector I see a line of heavies coming straight at me...:D

I like the way RSRD handles the orders, really makes you feel like you're in a campaign.

My second patrol didnt go so well

I came across a large convoy heading south towards Borneo from Manilla, lots of protection, I didnt count how many sub chasers there were, but there was at least 6. Man those things are NASTY, this was my first encounter with them. I didnt get a chance to loose a torp, they picked me up and promptly sunk me, Ive never felt so helpless before..... 3 or 4 of them formed a circle above me and just shot off the side throwing DC's, I had nowhere to go...:o

Tastes differ of course, and I personally understand completely why some folks mightn't like RFB. It's a realism mod, and as such puts little or no importance to gameplay per se. But then there's always TM there as well for those who want their action hard, fast and plentiful

I personally have very high expectations for RFB to mature into a formidable supermod á la GWX. If it does it might very well be that this Kaleun hangs up his Kriegsmarine uniform for good :hmm:

For sure, I wasnt knocking RFB at all, it just wasnt my cup of tea, yet...:)

I play GWX in SH3, I think its a great balance of realism and gameplay.

GWX is an awesome supermod, and truth be telt it's what I currently play too while waiting for RFB to really find its feet. But I'm maybe into more realism a tad still, in that I do actually find GWX shipping to be a bit too plentiful - and maybe, in some cases, too easy to sink as well. But then just as you said yourself, what this seems to prove is that KptLt. Lehmann et. al. really did strike a brilliant balance between realism and gameplay in their superb mod :up:

Different strokes for different gamers is what it's all about IMHO, and surely there's no need to knock anyones favourites because of that
