After having seen Enemy at the Gates I decided to look up some snipers on wikipedia, after a while I remembered a movie about an American World War 1 sniper and after reading the scarce info on wikipedia about US Snipers in WW1 I'm pretty sure the movie is based on the story of Herman Davis.

I thought Gene Kelly depicted him but I couldn't find a single movie that he stars in as a WW1 soldier. The movie is in black&white and I'm not entirely sure but I think it was made before 1940 (which rules out Gene Kelly)

Could anyone please tell me what movie I'm looking for here?

I have never heard of Herman Davis, so I looked him up. Interesting story, but I couldn't find any movie based on him.

The only WWI American infantry film I can think of is Sergeant York, based on the true story of Alvin York and his pretty much single-handed taking out of a German machine-gun nest and capture of 132 German soldiers.

Haaah thank you... That's it. I totally forgot about that bit about the war prisoners, maybe that's also why I thought Herman Davis was the guy in question after reading the bit about the killing of 4 German Machine gunners.

So it was Gary Cooper who played York, now I really wonder why I thought of Gene Kelly.
