It'd be a real shame if anyone was in those houses when the Hornet came down. Wonder what caused the crash, the article didn't really go into details.

I heard one of the witnesses say it went down noiselessly...
flameout on approach? More likely than a bird getting sucked into both engines. Unless pilots are trained to cut the engines before bailing out?

I was in that area this morning. I live about 25 miles from the site. Watching it on the local news now.
Here's a couple of the local news sites, pictures and videos:

BBC says three, one eyewitness said the plane was spinning the other said it came in low trailing some fumes.
Death toll up to three with one still missing:

Two miles from the airport . . . almost made it didn't he. Wonder what the aircraft captain has to say about the aircraft. Wonder what the findings of engine failure are. Last crash of a F/A-18 in the area was back in 2005 on Federal Land east of the main runway.

sad.
I have done a bit of flying around the San Diego Area myself. Most of the airports in the region have Pacific ocean on one end of the runway and real estate on the other. You auger one in you have a 50/50 chance of coming down on someone. :nope:
I hope to god i never have to put one down in that situation - let alone bail out!
It is going to be difficult for that pilot knowing his plane came down on those folks.
4 dead, the lone survivor of the household, who had just moved into the area is praying for the pilot so he doesn't go through the grief he is going through. Pilot apparently was aiming for the nearby Rose Canyon Open space when the engines shut down, but we wont know for sure until the investigation is completed.

I cannot imagine for the life of me going to work one day and then being called and told your entire family is dead in a one in a million disaster. That just blows my mind.

That man is one amazing human being"
"Please pray for him not to suffer from this accident," a distraught Dong Yun Yoon told reporters gathered near the site of Monday's crash of an F/A-18D jet in San Diego's University City community. "He is one of our treasures for the country," Yoon said in accented English punctuated by long pauses while he tried to maintain his composure.
"I don't blame him. I don't have any hard feelings. I know he did everything he could," said Yoon, flanked by members of San Diego's Korean community, relatives and members from the family's church.
