View Full Version : Weather woes in GWX2.1

I think something might be wrong, for over a month now I have had 15ms/ overcast skies, and visibility moderate to poor and no precipitation, and that's it apart from one day I got 14ms wind. Could someone post how the relevant files should look and where I can find them so I can check them?

Simple solution is to get the OLC ubermod. Just got to the mods forum, and all your problems will be solved:up:

So there is an issue with the weather in GWX 2.1? I've noticed the same thing. Been patroling now for three weeks with steady 15m/s winds. All that changes is the wind direction and occasionally the visibility.

There has always been an issue with the weather in SH3, but GWX 2.1 improved it a lot, by incorporating Real Weather fix mod.
The same type of weather lasts longer if you frequently save/load the game. Also, weather changes more often in summer than in the winter.

Absolutely correct.

Saved and reloaded only once because I had to go out, just had OLCE2 and Thomsen's water mod enabled but being unsure of what would happen when enabling the GWX alternative flotillas mod I disabled them for this patrol, which is why I want to check the files.

Also Thomsen is looking at the effects the mods had on my game and says there is something wrong so another reason to check the files are correct.

I had had no rain at all on that last patrol either

Stormy weather isn't all bad. It is possible to accquire, hunt and sink ships and convoys entirely by hydrophone, and escorts have a hell of a time finding you in those conditions. Plus, no planes:D :D :D !

Yes I know, I much prefer it for convoy attacking, sat a periscope depth once in after sinking a battleship while 9 DDs were circling my postion no more than 1000m-2000m and they couldn't get a fix on me:arrgh!:

Anyway the weather itself is not the problem I am trying to establish whether my files for controlling the weather patterns are broken:damn:

Will I need to download S3D if I want to view the Scene.dat files?

I've heard it said that the weather 'rolls a die' randomly after a set amount of time, and it can A) Get worse, B) Get better, or C) Stay the same. If it's already at its worst (or best) it has a 2/3 chance of staying that way, instead of the 1/3 of doing any of the above. And, as said, that it resets every time you reload the game.

Don't know that it's true, but I've also heard some complain that it stays perfect for weeks on end sometimes as well, so that seems the likely explanation.

Well I let the patrol run and only reloaded once more, the best the weather got was 1 day of wind at 9ms and eventually it rained after 2 months, but after 3 months of the weather being as aforementioned I give up and will restart the patrol and see if that helps:down:

Therefore if you constantly save and restart the save before that die roll, you'll get the same weather for a looong time.

Well mate, I can tell you for certain that OLC's work is good to go.

However, since you've added Phillip Thomsen's water mod on top... all bets are off.

Your problems are not specifically related to GWX 2.1 itself.

Yes sir Kpt. Lehmann, I'm am not trying to imply something is wrong with GWX2.1, I hope that is clear. I am worried that I have done something wrong during the process of enabling/disabling mods and broken my install. I just want to know if there is anyway I can check the files are as they should be.
Thank you.

On my current patrol, everytime I position to attack a convoy, it starts raining. :damn:

Well, that's your own fault. Mother Nature found out about you and her daughter.

In GWX 2.!, the weather changes frequently, from bad to worse, at the wrong time for the wrong purpose. It's designed to make your life miserable.

Can you think of a better reason to go back and turn your computer on?

I find the weather changeability has improved drastically since GWX 2.1. Having said that, I have had instances where for a whole patrol the weather has stayed relatively settled, i.e. no rain or overcast conditions but several changes to wind speed and sea state. I am currently using OLCE2 and did try Thomsen's water mod but that killed my frame rates somewhat so I disabled it. Because the water mod overwrites files in OLCE2 you get a warning from JSGME when enabling it saying that it is overwriting files already changed by OLCE2. If I understood you correctly, you mentioned that you disabled both OLCE2 and Thomsen's water mod to enable GWX alternative flotillas? I'm no expert in these matters and am happy for others to correct me on this, but did you disable Thomsen's water mod before OLCE2? If not it could cause problems in your installation and may be the cause of your unchanging weather issue. Just a guess though.

I'm still plugging away in February 1940 on my little IIA ducky visiting exciting places in the North Sea with a few (a very few) hits notched up.
The current weather off the Shetlands is balmy and more like a summer cruise off the Bahamas...!!
I know from personal experience, the North Sea and Atlantic weather in winter (and other times) is generally quite dreadful. Has this been taken in to account in the game?
The other minor quibble is sunrise and sunset times. Again in the northern hemisphere (and I use winter as an example) it is at best 0900 before daylight is reasonable and by 1600 it is beginning to darken. Is it too complex to create a compromise so that some degree of reality is available?

Using SH3 3.1
GWX 2.1
OLC GUI Special 1.2.7
OLC Uber Mod 2.4.3
Plus some other cosmetic mods.

Thanks.

Harry:)

How??? At some point you have to "see" the ship in the UZO or periscope to set up the targeting...no?

Most recent tests on weather (incorporating environmental work by OLC.....and also without) have both proven satisfactory recently in regard to the forthcoming GWX3.0 release.

No testing was carried out with any other 3rd party mod.

GWX players add 3rd party mods at their own risk.

Now it remains to be seen what GWX3.0 will include with regards to mods....if anything.
