View Full Version : Changing the gramaphone music?

I've searched and read a lot on this subject but still have a few questions.
1. MP3's? I've read here that .OGG files are "more stable"? Do you mean more stable in SH3? What does SH3 use to play the music...or is it using your computer's default player? My untouched Gramaphone folder has an MP3 already in it..."Gramophone1.mp3"...a GWX addition I'm guessing?
2. Is there a limit to the amount of files in the gramaphone file?
3. Is there a size limit for each file? I've read comments about "looping" but once a tune is over I would go on to the next, anyway.
4. Has anyone considered a mod that would add a "real" music player to SH3? "real" as in a CD player like the one that is in the great Grumman Goose addon for Flight Simulator 9. It could be called a gramaphone, but would play whatever music you had stored on your system or in the optical drive. I'm just throwing that out there.
Now...I'm REALLY going to send the reality guru's into a frenzy but...the period music is not my thing. Some of it I like but I had something else in mind...
"Niteprowler" and "Hell...ain't a bad place to be" (AC/DC), for starters. Anything from Rush's Caress of Steel, some Metallica and also the Scorp's and LZ. I think you see where this is going   .
Don't hate me :p .

I'm sure someone with more info on the files and limits will be along. But I've got a ton of period tunes with a mix of songs/tracks from movies, both formats and don't seem to have an issue with the player. Once in a while a tune is recorded quiet or a bit loud, ehh.
Somewhere a clock strikes midnight
And there's a full moon in the sky
You hear a dog bark in the distance
You hear someone's baby cry
A rat runs down the alley
And a chill runs down your spine
Someone walks across your grave
And you wish the sun would shine
No one's gonna warn you
And no one's gonna yell 'Attack'
And you don't feel the steel
Till it's hanging out your back
I'm your Night Prowler, asleep in the day
I'm your Night Prowler, get out of my way
Look out for the Night Prowler, watch you tonight
I'm the Night Prowler, when you turn out the light ...
Too scared to turn your light out
'Cos there's something on your mind
Was that a noise outside your window?
What's that shadow on the blind?
As you lie there naked
Like a body in a tomb
Suspended animation
As I slip into your room
Funny, but sometimes that song is in the back of my mind when I take the .243 for a walk. Ahh Tranquility, the silence of a new dawn makes it easier to hold the crosshairs still.

My friend...the reason I still have my "prowler" nick...in so many places...is just that damn song :) . It started out as "niteprowler", in areas to remain unnamed ;) , and has continued for 12 years.
The .243 is an excellent cartridge for small game. My regrets, these days, is I haven't had a chance to break out my 30.06 in several years. Old and not the flattest shooting, I know, but my "aught 6" bolt has never failed me for "big meat".
Good to know I'm not the only old time rocker, or hunter, here.

There have in the past been some complaints of gramaphone tunes 'skipping'. This seems to be limited to MP3s. It will also play .wav files without problem, the only downside being that .wavs are a lot bigger.
2. Is there a limit to the amount of files in the gramaphone file?
I don't think so.
3. Is there a size limit for each file? I've read comments about "looping" but once a tune is over I would go on to the next, anyway.
Again, I don't think so. The size problem mostly seems to be with ingame sound files, mainly the 'Creaks'.

A great idea.

I'm just the opposite. When I listen to my favorite music, I play solitaire or something similarly mindless, because I want to concentrate on listening to my music, and anything else is peripheral. When I'm pretending I'm a u-boat captain, I want to hear the music they did.
Why would I hate you? Everybody's entitled to their own taste, even if you don't have any.:p :rotfl:

I've read here about various freeware programs that will convert to OGG.vorbis sound format. Is there one of these programs which will also equalize the volume (not the correct term, I know) of the OGG files, in batches instead of one at a time? The only mention I've seen is of a program which will do it for MP3's in batches. I'll be mostly converting audio CD files to OGG format. Since there is no way to adjust gramaphone volume while in a mission, I can see that as being important.

Audacity 1.2.6 is the freebie I use for conversion to .ogg, and it works well. It can certainly adjust volumes, but I don't know if it works in batches. The site is here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

And I use Goldwave www.goldwave.com (http://www.goldwave.com) but it also doesn't do batches; or at least I think it doesn't.
As for finding the correct levels for the game, I installed one song only, and fiddled with it until I got it where I liked it, then individually set each song's volume to the same peak levels. A real pain, I know, but I couldn't think of any other way to do it.

A real pain, I know, but I couldn't think of any other way to do it.I have Goldwave 5.1 and did batchprocessing a couple of months ago to turn mp3s into Oggs. It can even do certain effects (noise filter, volume adjust, mechanize, whatever you can do manually) on the files during the batch. Except maybe adjust all the volumes to a common level. That would require scanning all the files for volume level seperately. But what do I know what it can/ cannot do, I hardly use it, and don't know halve of what all the options mean.

I only have the free trial version, so I'm even more limited. Still, I like it.

I suppose the other option is to convert anything not MP3 to MP3 and use the batch file I read about in another thread for volume...then change it all to OGG.
Thanks for the help guys.

[edit] Just checked, their latest version is 5.25

The mod I'd like to see is a pause button for the gramaphone! If I pause the game to di something else, the music keeps playing!

It doesn't have one? I never noticed.
I think pressing the play button again pauses it, but now I'm not sure anymore.

I'm not aware of a program which will batch convert and batch normalise volume at the same time. Best to normalise a batch of Mp3s using MP3 Gain:
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
Then convert them with media Coder:
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
Both programs are fast, easy and free
Audacity is superb, buy doesn't work in batches - single tracks only
