I have been playing TMO.

Second mission. After completing 2 goals, photo recon, and 48 patrol off Convoy College, I was given complete automony to patrol as I pleased. I started up the Notheast coast. About half-way between Formosa and Japan, I ran into a convoy of four freighters and on Destroyer. Making work of them, I radioed a status report in. I get orders to go back to Convoy College and patrol another 48 hours there.

OK, no problem. Half way to the area, radar picks up 2 contacts, its daylight, so I decide to submerge and cruise until 2100 or later. (Its only 1300 then).

I'm doing 1 knt at about 180 feet.

Suddenly, I hear "we're taking damage!" "Hull damaged!" "Diesel Engines damaged!" "Electric engines damaged!" "Sonar Damaged!" "Pumps Damaged!" etc.

Before I know it, my eulogy is being performed.

What the heck happened?

I was deep enough to avoid DC's.

I dove long before the aircraft got there.

What happened?

Several times I have dove to avoid aircraft, only to surface later to damage.

What happened?

Halfway between Formosa and Japan.... hmm... that sounds like a mine more than a depth charge to me.

Ducimus' evil airplanes can, depending on surface conditions, see you even deeper than 180' on infrequent occasions. You need to completely change your strategy, as cowardice is no longer rewarded. You can't hide underwater any more. You must fight. You have to stay on the surface and use your radar to avoid planes. If you don't have radar, your lookouts are your lifeline.

Hey, this ain't no vacation and Ducimus' evil airplanes are going to make sure you don't take one again.:rotfl:

Check out surface conditions. If it's glassy and smooth, those planes are going to be able to see deep. When you see a plane, make sure you are below periscope depth before he enters a circle around your sub with a radius of 5 miles. Go all the way to 100', or 200' if it's smooth. Wait five minutes and surface. With radar there is no danger then, because another plane has not had time to enter your danger zone. Otherwise, as you proved above, you surface blind into the sights of another one of Ducimus' evil airplanes. You will learn to curse them. And don't even THINK about shooting at them.

Sorry Rockin, I don't agree. I have been playing TMO since it's inception. If you stay on the surface to fight a/c you eventually are going to be damaged. I only do that if it's too late to dive and even then, after the a/c passes I dive.

I have read that in TMO the a/c can see you at depth but that has never been my experience, not even once. In fact, my standard procedure is to dive to periscope depth, raise the SD mast and watch them. I only lower the mast if they are heading right for me, and even then I just stay at periscope depth until they pass. The only time I crash dive to 160' is if they have seen me on the surface. I personally have never been damaged at that depth.

Ahmmmm puzzled and perplexed. That doesn't follow.

That is what I say also.

I don't think it was mines as I was 200 nm from any land mass.

The aircraft were over 10 miles away when radar picked them up. I dove to 180' and turned 90 degrees to port. I did not want to shoot it out with them as my AA gunners are inexperienced. They couldn't hit the side of a barn with the atomic bomb.

And BAM!

I just could not figure that one out.

Were you in time compression at the ... uhh... time?

Was this after a saved game?

Did you shell (alt tab) out of the game?

Did you hit crash dive by mistake and not notice?

Did you slam into the bottom?

Did a crewman drop a torpedoe :p

Could be the 'mysterious catastrophic damage' bug :hmm:

I got exploded by nothing once, too. I figured it was a bug and reloaded.

No.

No.

No.

Did you hit crash dive by mistake and not notice?

No.

Did you slam into the bottom?

No, the depth where I was at was 3125'

Did a crewman drop a torpedoe :p

Could have been Bernard's driving.

Could be the 'mysterious catastrophic damage' bug :hmm:

Just don't know what happened.

Anyhow, I just reloaded a previous save, and continued until I was out of "fish" and went home.

I have noticed that sometimes after diving to avoid aircraft. Even hours and hours later, upon surfacing, I hear damage even though there are no a/c around.

Go figure.

If that's happening repeatedly, there's no reason to guess. Load up a replay and figure out exactly what happened. Let us know what you find.

There have been random reports of mysterious catostrophic damage for some time now.

There is no real pattern as to mods and such.

It does usually happen after loading a saved game.

I have experienced damage reports after loading a saved game however it is after I had recieved damage prior to the save. I assume it is the game getting back up to damage status.

Perhaps this getting back up to status goes nuts now and then.
