I know early in the war an aggressive skipper can bag some good tonnage from Manilla, considering the impending invasion and all. Overall though what is the best home port for seeing the most action? I'm running TMO 1.52 and RSRDC.

I find basing in Brisbane and going through the Solomons, New Guinea and New Britain campaigns could get very action-packed for very little travel

Hi there.
In my career (stock game) I chose to start in the Asiatic in '41 this way I thought I would be closer to the action and so it was, but while on the first patrol I had to switch to Surabaya and ended up at Pearl.
So IMHO I think it's not to different (If you except the distances), because I patrol around the same places as before, just have to keep for longer an eye to the fuel.

The Asiatic Fleet gets transferred to Perth when Java is lost, not Pearl, I find that the most annoying base because you have to go either around Australia or through the East Indies to get to anywhere important, I have found myself grounded on some small island many times

Perth? Maybe you're right, but just before Java was lost I ended my patrol there and the next one started from Pearl.
I'm still playing the stock game, I don't know maybe this has to do anything with it?

It happens in the stock game too, maybe you accidentally transferred to Pearl or something

I was based in Fremantle, accepted a new sub and winded up at Pearl somehow.

If you took a Gato before December 1942 you will wind up in Pearl. Sub Asiatic did not get Gatos until sometime in December. Playing RSRDC I have found the best early game port to be the Manila/Freeport homes. That way I can get missions to the Celebes Sea shipping lanes with all those lovely and abundant single merchant ships. Later you can transfer to Saipan as a home.

If you start from Manila and go to the top of Luzon you will encounter the first invasion fleet in RSRDC. I never seem to be able to penetrate the 16 escorts to get to the four ships they protect. The escorts are experts in detection. If you go between the islands just north of Luzon, two escorts and a 9000 ton Chitose AV will be heading north, This onw you can catch and kill.

This was a running account of one of last year's more memorable patrols when I was based out of Manila in '41...
