View Full Version : Saddle tanks
In game in order to use them you must be surfaced but was there any record of the reloads being switched from aft to fore since they are up there anyway? Would it be even possible? I know I would rather that extra eel in my dry fore tube instead of one more shot out the rear.
Does anyone have video of them being loaded/reloaded?
Did not quite understand your question, but when you talk about the reloads being switch from aft to fore, if you are refering to the torpedos, the aft reload can not be used in the fore tubes and vice-versa!

Thanks for the pics. There seems to be a slot for loading just in front of the deck gun. There dosn't seem to be (except maybe the pullies set up) anything stopping a U-boat from taking on torpedoes fore or aft. I know the game mechanic prevents this I was curious what that was based upon. I suppose they could just have a script so it take an hour and a half instead of an hour if you wanted to transfer aft to fore one torpeado at a time. It would be useful to have that option and even be able to unload the aft torpeados to transfer them as well if I am willing to risk being topside for that long. The only thing 'gamey' about this saddle torp loading is the fact you can still crash dive at any point. When loading the saddle torps that option should be modified in game or at least off limits. Something like lumbering and delumbering a cannon for transport, you shouldn't be able to fire it like a machine gun.

I believe they used the regular torpedo loading hatch that they would use to load the torpedoes in base.
I think Teddy Suhren's crew needed 'several' hours to move a torpedo from the aft reserve tube to the forward torpedo room. They tied life jackets to the torpedo and floated it forward and then hoisted it up and then down into the forward torpedo room. Quite an operation. I would say even diving with that many men on deck and all the equipment would have been almost impossible. Clearly never to be attempted unless you were really in the middle of nowhere.
I usually don't bother trying to reload the reserve torpedoes unless I am in the South Atlantic.

Great pics...and very interesting video, showing "how to do the things"! :)

Neat! I wish that was modeled in game.

I always thought that it was not possible to use the Aft. Reserve for the Front Tube.
Or the other way around. since it was difficult to man the eels around the tower.:hmm:

Thats what I thought Myaxle, it sounded crazy to try to do that, besides why not fire from aft tubes? Then I searched for the mentioned Teddy Suhren, here's how they did it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl-P7Fhst60 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl-P7Fhst60)
edit: My bad, this is a milk cow resupply operation.. Was this aft reserve to forward tubes done in real life guys? Any references, would be interesting to read.
Good find piri.
But that was rather a resupply than a simple reloading! But i understand that they could apply the same technique that was shown in the clip, for the aft reserve .:hmm:
