It took a while, but I finally have all 13 of the USS Drum's (SS-228) war patrol reports from WWII online in HTML format:

The USS Drum made a remarkable 13 war patrols in WWII and is the 8th highest in rank of most Japanese tonnage sunk by American submarines in WWII. She was also the FIRST Gato-class submarine commissioned.

Nice stuff...

It was interesting to read all the difficulties they had to over come. Seems like that gyro compass was giving them fits. The flllooded torpedoes, and the in ability to pick up sounds at close range 'due to debrie in the water'.

well, reading this has given me much more of an understanding of submarine warfare. One thing I have always found annoying is, how difficult it is to get my sub to dive in heavy weather. It seems USS Drm had the same problem. Thanks for a great link......

Those reports make for some interesting reading, didn't know she had a problem with her port engine on 4 patrols at all. That dive plane issue too was something I had no idea could develop in subs.

Long live the Drum, hopefully she's got good years ahead of her

Thanks Snakeyez really good reading.

Its interesting to note the ranges at which engagements were conducted. I try to get in to less than 1,000 yards, but Drum is attacking at ranges of 2,000 to 3,000 yards.

Also the amount of, sometimes serious, failures encountered is quite shocking.

Again good work my man.

Sorry, I do not.

You can get any American submarine WWII patrol reports on disc from John Clear of Submarine Memorabilia at http://www.usssealion.com/NSL/war_patrols.htm but I don't know of a source for German reports. Surely they exist.
