Posted this toward the bottom of a different thread, might have gotten lost in the shuffle.

----------------
Preamble: I've searched through quite a few of the Crew Managment/Promotion threads - have gained lots of good info, but haven't found an answer to this particular question. In fact, these thread reviews actually generated this question, as many others seem to have had a different experience. Am playing the stock game (1.5) which I guess *might* have something to do with it.

What is the max number (or proportion) of Officers/CPOs in the crew?

Am in late '44. For most of my career (all my Gato/Balao time), have been limited to 6 Officers/CPOs combined. With a crew of 80+, this seems pretty low. I'm also maxed out on Petty Officers, but at least I seem to have a reasonable number of them (32).

My impression from reading other threads is that other folks have many more Khaki and perhaps P.O.s than this. Am trying to figure out why. I've got tons of renown (with little to spend it on), I don't think that's the reason.

My confusion is compounded by the fact that at career beginning, the game started me with MORE officers/chiefs/petty officers...in a smaller submarine.

Any insights?

Any insights? IMO you should have kept the original crew above rank 7 with stock 1.5 even though it may be considered by some to be 'unrealistic'. The Dev's designed SH4 to be played a certain way with features like the 'special ability' crewmen that start to appear if you do it their way.

There is an edit around here: "What's With The New Crew Limit? Can It Be Removed?"

Do as 'Skwasjer' suggests in post #5 to get your old initial crew proportions back.

Post #2 deals with editing the UPC files in Data\submarine for each submarine making a permanent increase - which is probably why you have seen that some people have more crew above rank 7.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the info Art!

Interestingly, right after I posted that, last night I checked into Pearl at patrol end, and ComSubPac decided to give my boat a new paint job. Apparently an upgraded officer limit came with it....I now have two extra chiefs for a grand total of eight khaki. Was able to get a couple of new petty officers as well.

Very definitely, on future careers I will *not* get rid of any officers/chiefs, since the game apparently starts you "over the limit". I did it this time just to see where the limit was, trying to figure out the game. Heh, if I'd known I'd go all the way down to six, I wouldn't have done that.

If you look around the internet you can find patrol log of WW2 submarines that list the crews for every patrol. You have to dig a little for classes other than Gato and later but it can be found. Analysis of crews from Gato and Balao crews give an average of 8.57 Officers, 7.16 Chiefs, 13.14 First Class, 20.22 Second Class, 18.86 Third Class, 13.43 Seaman and Fireman First Class, 2.33 Seaman and Fireman Second Class, and 0.15 Seaman or Fireman Apprentice. Total average crew per patrol 83.68.

History shows the subs to have more experienced and trained crews than the game. That is why people have modified the games limit.
