CANBERRA (Reuters) – Australia's kangaroos are genetically similar to humans and may have first evolved in China, Australian researchers said Tuesday.
Scientists said they had for the first time mapped the genetic code of the Australian marsupials and found much of it was similar to the genome for humans, the government-backed Center of Excellence for Kangaroo Genomics said.
"There are a few differences, we have a few more of this, a few less of that, but they are the same genes and a lot of them are in the same order," center Director Jenny Graves told reporters in Melbourne.
"We thought they'd be completely scrambled, but they're not. There is great chunks of the human genome which is sitting right there in the kangaroo genome," Graves said, according to AAP. Humans and kangaroos last shared an ancestor at least 150 million years ago, the researchers found, while mice and humans diverged from one another only 70 million years ago.
Kangaroos first evolved in China, but migrated across the Americas to Australia and Antarctica, they said.
"Kangaroos are hugely informative about what we were like 150 million years ago," Graves said.

I think there could be another explanation for human genomes in kangaroos...something related to excessive consumption of Castlemaine XXXX, perhaps?

They taste pretty good too ! Goes best with Mexican jumping beans. :p :rotfl:
As an Australian I have to strongly disagree. Kangaroo goes best with a bottle of Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz.:know:

Just don;t overcook the meat. It needs to be medium rare at most. I prefer mine still hopping.:rotfl:

Oh I agree.
kangaroo simply can't be overdone. Beef and lamb i like deader than dead, but roo, medium rare at the most.
Whats the saturated fat content of Kangaroo meat?
Bugger all. ~2% IIRC. It's one of the leanest meats on the planet. Kangaroo meat has a very high concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjugated_linoleic_acid) (CLA) when compared with other foods. CLA has been attributed with a wide range of health benefits including an anti cancer action and reducing body fats.Source: Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo_meat

Whats the saturated fat content of Kangaroo meat?
"Kangaroo meat is very lean and has less than two per cent fat content. Kangaroo meat also contains very high levels of quality protein, iron and zinc. Due to its leanness, kangaroo meat must be cooked with care to avoid overcooking. "

Sounds as good if not better than Bison which i have been eating a lot of lately.
It's got a similar texture to venison, but a distinct flavour of it's own. the tail make a really good soup as well!

Although I don't drink now I can still remember this quality drop years ago. I used to buy a case of this upon release every few years. Used to be priced around AUD $40 per bottle. Yep it's not cheap. Is best left in the bottle for a couple of years minimum and cellars well if stored correcly for +8 to 10 years or so. Enjoy. :yep:

The meat is about as lean as it comes. Only needs to be seared for a few minutes. Overdone Kangaroo is not good. Cooked right as it is yummy. :smug:

If I manage to obtain some I will give a complete report!
Meanwhile if you Aussies can get your hands on some Bison I recommend you give that a try as well.

This is part of their natural behaviour as a mating competitive ritual between rival males trying to impress and hang on to their harems.

You do not want to get in the way of their hind legs though. They are strong beasts and have been known to really pack a punch if kicked where it hurts!
