Hi everyone!
After quiting the US Postal Service in 2001 due to my maintenance supervisor being a jerk, I have finally gotten back in. I'll be working as a 'casual', but not in the realm of seasonal. As I've told everyone lately, it has come full circle. If I didn't quit the Post Office then, my wife would not have gone to school for Surgical Technology and gotten the job that she has now in a stable career field. My foot is back in the door and the plant manager here told me in the interview that my prospects of being hired as a career employee is high due to being a veteran and a 'reinstatement eligible' postal employee.
Thanks for the years of listening to me whine about my various employement woes!

Congrats on getting back in.
But dident I hear recently they were planning on lay offs?
Dont want to rain on your parade or anything, just wondering about the timing.

Great to hear that your employed! Sometimes a turn for the worse in the short term and mean better things in the long term. I'm about to become a train driver after 8 years of being a librarian.:)

I've heard about this also and found this tidbit...
Indeed, the Postal Service has just issued this statement:
“A news story currently in wide circulation is reporting that the Postal Service will soon layoff 40,000 employees. This story is not accurate. Originating out of Shreveport, LA, the story does quote a Postal Service spokesperson. Unfortunately, that spokesperson was in error. The Postal Service is not laying off employees. Efforts to match our workforce to a reduced workload are focused on voluntary early retirements. Voluntary early retirement has been offered to a number of employees and to date, 3,685 employees have accepted the offer.”
I'm sure that Mr. Lavelle Pepper received a few phone calls from some important people in the Postal Service.
Sonar,
I hate to rain on anyone's parade but...
The new FSS is causing massive excessing. My understanding is Memphis, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, and Denver have already drawn their circle and more is to come. I suspect St. Louis, once it goes, will have an even bigger circle.
The Union's have to be notified that layoffs have been considered, as is required by the contract.
Reinstatement is probably your best option and I would be making that application very, very quickly. I think you also have going for you that you were in maintenance - as those spots seem to me anyway to be a little rougher to fill than the 'operational' type positions.
I wish you luck. I do not envy anyone having to look for a job.....

It's been since 2001...what's FSS?
That's why I'm attempting to get in as a casual. My chances of reinstatement go better as I'm already inside.

Congratz, I can also relate to what you told about your previous boss being a bit of an ass. Been there done that. It can be especially bad if your working environment is dangerous and has all kinds of hazards that you're not properly briefed on.
Although the good thing is, once you've gone through a bad work experience, you'll notice that pretty much anything else will feel like an improvement.

Flat Sequencing Sorter...does the same for Flats that the DBCS did for letters.
Actually, by Civil Service rules, they cannot take it into consideration your casual time or the fact you are presently a casual...however you are probably right in your assessment...My personal opinion is that you should apply for reinstatement...and hope your old boss isn't still there....

I sent you a pm NealT regarding the reinstatement situation...
Our facility had the FSM-1000 when I left. I'm sorry if I came across that I thought my time as a casual would count as I know that wouldn't. I am curious as to whether or not I would get my last pay step of E if I got reinstated as I can't find anything in the ELM or contract about reinstatement.
I once considered a career in the Post Office but was turned off by the maze of rules and regulations involved. It made the Army seem straight forward by comparison.

I'm hoping to get on as a carrier. My gramps, and his brother both di, and mom was a sup at the Annex, so I figure the job can't be all that bad.
It is good work. Steady. Show up when scheduled, ready to go to work, on time, and do your job. That is pretty much all you have to do. Once you can get more than 6 years in, you are pretty much guaranteed against layoffs, unless you are management. You may have to move (they are closing/consolidating some facilities) but at least you keep the job - unlike some other corporations who have announced big layoffs recently...
Again, I wish you luck.

So true...so true. I've never worked an easier job than my time as an automation clerk....load the machine of mail, fix jams when people send keys in the regular mail and spend 10 minutes in downtime cleaning the mail that was ripped in the process, pull the mail off of the slots and place in the sleaves for banding. Granted...my time as a custodial laborer was even better before moving to the facility I did.

Well,
My orientation day went really good. I was given a phone number for someone in the district hr regarding reinstatement and will be calling them tomorrow. My shift is 'Tour 1' and from 11pm-8am. Glad to be back in government employment again as out of 12 casuals hired, I'm one of 4 who aren't "christmas only" casuals and will come back after christmas.:rock:
