Iran now has enough material to produce its first nuke.

"They clearly have enough material for a bomb," said Richard Garwin, a top nuclear physicist who helped invent the hydrogen bomb and has advised Washington for decades. "They know how to do the enrichment. Whether they know how to design a bomb, well, that's another matter."Point being, THEY don't have to make one. just refine the raw material and sell it to someone who can... :shifty:

It wouldn't surprise me if Bush decided to bomb Iran before he left office.

Not that I want him to, nor do I think it's the right thing to do (it isn't) but if it happens I wouldn't be surprised.

Bush/Cheney think the answer to everything is to feed the military industrial complex and will search for any excuse to do so. They tried to build a case for Iran a few times, and I hope this isn't the beginning of another attempt.

It is more likely that the Israelis will do the smack down.. that's what they did with Saddam's nuclear facility in the 80's or so.

I'll see your post count and raise you...

Back to topic, I don't think Iran will be caught like Iraq was with Israel. It would be very hard to take out the production centre. Wherever they can build one doesn't matter as much as theie ability to say that they can. A great thing to point around to keep people you don't want away from you and trying to alter the game. Wait till oil hits US$40 a barrell and see what they say then!

Letum's guide to understanding physics:

Like all liquids, electricity is blue. You can't see it in wires because it is
always right in the middle. Lightbulbs work by changing the colour of
electricity.

Like all poisons, radiation is green. It is easy to avoid as it makes a loud
clicking sound. If you can get lots of radiation to make one loud click at the
same time a nuclear explosion happens.

Magnetism is red, as are all magnets. Magnets lead to the north pole because
that is where they are from. They always return there to die.

Gravity is invisible, but if it wasn't it would be Yellow. There is no gravity on the
moon. If there was gravity on the moon it would be coved in apples. Gravity
has an extremely powerful effect on apples, but no effect on aeroplanes.
It is impossible to carry apples in aeroplanes. They just won't take off.

It would surprise the hell out of me. Anyway, I think President Bush is going to let the next administration figure this one out regrettably. I'm hoping President Obama will handle this matter firmly and quickly. And I hope he drops that "without pre-conditions yada yada" talk. In other words, I'm hoping that if there is intel to support Mr. Bush's hardline on Iran, and Obama is privy to it, I hope his eyes were opened about what his course of action should be. Bombing of Iranian facilities???? I don't know, but it is an option that should be considered. Not sure if Mr. Obama has the fortitude or confidence to carry that out. This is something to watch very closely.

Why wouldn't they? I'm not saying they're going to go around giving nukes to terrorists, but for the Iranian state to want nukes is perfectly logical in their strategic situation.

I'm not saying they're going to go around giving nukes to terrorists,
The threat of Iran having nukes I root in the risk of "proliferation" in the main - "Iran being a nuclear power" itself is just my secondary concern.

but for the Iranian state to want nukes is perfectly logical in their strategic situation.
Indeed, if seeing it from just a purely strategic perspective.

If it were that strategic perspective exclusively, I would be concerned less, but the proliferation danger is much more dangerous. We have already one nuclear akistan, and it is engaged in proliferating at least knowledge and information - we should not tolerate a second Pakistan. Beside that, that Pakistan got nuclear weapons has shown to be one of the greatest political desasters since WWII which allows them to destabilise a whole region, since decades. They would not be able to afford that if not living under their nuclear "protection" umbrella (the threat to retaliate with nukes).

A nuclear armed Iran also would start a nuclear arms race in the region, with Egypt and Saudi-Arabia, probably even Syria, going next. This is inevitable, guaranteed, sealed, promised and decided.

They said Iraq was building a nuke too. We saw how that went. There isn't anythng the US can do with Iran even if it wanted to. America can't even handle Iraq, so there is no way it can start crap in Iran.

A nuclear armed Iran also would start a nuclear arms race in the region, with Egypt and Saudi-Arabia, probably even Syria, going next. This is inevitable, guaranteed, sealed, promised and decided. Nuclear Iran or not, other countries in the region are going to start building nukes anyways in the near future. The Saudis will probably do it first, and if it's something they're set on I can't see the west stopping them under current circumstances. Even the Saudis can't seem to rely on their traditional American protectors any more as a benign super power shielding them.

They seem to be a much more cost effective method of ensuring the conventional US forces don't roll over your dictatorship and its billions upon billions of dollars worth of USELESS (because of the relatively small numbers they are operated in and lack of truly capable operators) American/Russian/Euro sold arsenals (deals with the devil for oil offsets, helping US GDP, and the foolish "balancing act" game between Israelis and Arabs).

Hell, after we initially sanction you we'll even pay you off and take you off the state sponsors of terrorism list if you make it look like your nuclear program isn't rolling full speed ahead.

There are strong hints that the Saudis already are at it. But since the Saudis and the Persians already are engaged in a proxy war against each other, this is no argument to allow nukes to Iran. both want to be the ruling power in the Muslim world, it is shia versus sunni, too.The trick is to deny nukes to both. In the end, the West has no friends in the whole ME anyway. we should start to realise that. A balance of terror needs reasonbale actors. but Saudi Arabia and Iran both are on a crusade against Europe and both alreadsy support terrorists and relgious fanatics as well as their ideological quick breeder institutions in wetsern countries. Let them establish theor balance of terror with sand, rocks and oranges - not with thermonuclear engineering knowledge and fissal material that can be carried in a suiotcase and traded to their non-regular proxies.
