This' a short review I wrote when I got it.

After the surprisingly successfull try on a modern era COD, it's equally surprising to see COD5 return, once again, to the battlefields of WWII. Havent we gotten enough of WWII shooters already? Apparently not, atleast I havent. After two playthroughs, I'm still thinking of starting going over it the third time. CoD5 takes the best features from the earlier parts and adds tons new.

You see the brutal WWII from two perspectives; Miller, a marine fighting the Japanese on the Pacific and Dimitri, a regular russian soldier (more about Dimitri later on). The two stories obviously arent connected in any way, you play few missions as Miller and hop to the shoes of Dimitri to give them facists a lead poisoning.

PACIFIC

Miller's story starts as a captive, facing the horrible death by decapitation, but at the last second another squad of marines come to rescue. And off you go to blow half the Pacific islands out of the sea. The missions are pretty straight-forward 'gun 'n run' style massacres. This doesnt bother as much as one would think. You dont have the time to get bored to it, the fanatic Japanese soldiers will keep you on your toes. Nothing gives a better scare than 4 J's jumping out of their hiding place, yelling BANZAAAAAIII!!! while running at you with their bayonets carrying your name. Tho, you stop fearing them when you get the flamethrower, yes, that's right, a FLAMETHROWER. :P Like in FarCry 2, you can set stuff on fire, not in big portions, but still. The burnt bodies are all charred and black after your little BBQ moment, the palm trees burn quite realisticly too. There's some missions where you for example man a gunner's position on a 'Black cat' flying a mission somewhere to take out Japanese merchants, but most of the story is playing hide & seek with the J's.

RUSSIAN FRONT

Dimitri should be called 'Vasili Zaitzev' instead. Basically the whole story is loaned from 'Enemy at the Gates', that is, if EATG would show Zaitzev's story from Stalingrad till the end of the war. Just like in the movie, you start laying down in the middle of your death comrades in fountain, somewhere in Stalingrad. The german soldiers are executing any survivors and shooting to the fountain, JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIE. Anywho, when the germans are gone, you meet another survivor in the fountain, an old soldier, who's name I cant remember, anyways, he plays the part of the comissar and Vasili's best friend from EATG. He gives you a sniper rifle.. ah, you're all seen the movie, he kills the general and some soldiers etc. etc. There isnt much new in terms of gameplay that would shine in the russian campaign, but it's the solid COD stuff, taking you from Stalingrad to Reichstag building, while killing any germans you can find (even executing wounded soldiers). The story is full of drama, and I dont mean that as a good thing, I lost count how many times Dimitri "cheated death" as the old man says, tbh, I got really bored to it. But all in all, the russian campaign was almost as good as the pacific campaign, but I couldnt help but to feel it was put in just to have a second campaign. The Pacific one is clearly the "main" campaign.

GAMEPLAY

The controls are the same as in the earlier games, why change something that is proven working, eh? ;) Really cant think of much to say, it's COD. Oh, there's one pretty biggish thing that usually bugs FPS games, in COD5, the enemy AI isnt shooting at you solely, they shoot the first they get on their sights. While this is very welcome "fix", it has some flaws. At times, I can stand right next to the enemy soldiers, while they are shooting at my AI friend. ??? Gore is introduced aswell. You get blown off limbs, bulletholes to the bodies etc. And above that, the cutscenes between missions are almost exclusively real footage from WWII, showing the cruel side of war. Hangings, executions, dead soldiers etc.

GRAPHICS & SOUNDS

Graphics are around the same quality as CoD4's, maybe abit sharper. Two thumbs up have to be given for the shadows & lighting effects. Especially the Pacific campaign with it's night missions in the jungle can be at times very scary, add a flare shooting up to the sky, blinding you and dozens of Japanese soldiers running out of the jungle to that and you have a good recipe for a heartattack. Also, the smoke effects from your smoke grenades are good. It's kind of layered, so you can see stuff inside the smoke when you get closer. I remember on the last mission of the Pacific story, threw two Smokers as we attacked, I held back abit to let the friendly AI do the dirty work, tee hee. As I went in closer to take a look who's still alive, I saw faint shadows fighting CQC in the midst of smoke, hard to describe it but it looked awesome.

The sound department have taken more of an 3rd person take on the weapon sounds. They all sound like you'd hear someone else shooting the gun few meters away. No loud bangs, just thuds. But I dont mind, I like them that way. :) Not much more to say about the sounds.

I think that's it, cant think of anything else to add, other than if you like WWII shooters, COD5 wont be a disappointment.

Actually I liked the Russian campaign much better than the Pacific campaign for some reason (Even though Reznov's babbling gets annoying sometimes)

Also, Nazi Zombies FTW!

Whizzed through the single player mode in two sittings, was fun for a bit but nothing mind blowing like call of duty 2 was.

Get the game for the MP and of course the best part of that is the Nazi Zombies mode.

bought the game the other day and MP works flawless, however, No matter what I do I can not get the single player campaign to work. It will let me get to the point where I select the dificulty then the game freezes up and the only solution is to completly reboot.:nope: Any suggestions?

I dont recommend you get it on PC. You'd need a monster to run it well. It runs choppy on 640x480 on my 7300GT, when CoD4 (which is pretty much the same graphically) runs perfectly on 1024x768

Its a cool game though, I've played through it - some tense moments in the Pacific campaign, and some outright cool ones in the Russian one.

 I completed it in a day! :)

Now i'm a Level 52 (Colonel III) on Multiplayer.

I LOVED THE Campagines!

I ended up reformating my HD and when I reinstalled the game everything works fine. Single player is fun but quick.

I am running a AMD 64fx single core, with 2 gig ram, ATI HD2600 vid card with 512 ram. Abd I can run the game exceptionally smooth at 1440x900 with AF turned off.

A good game but spawn, kill, die gets old kinda quick. Also the spawn points are rediculous. I am always getting flanked.

i love the game, its very well made okay maybe the campaign was a bit short but never the less the gore was a verywell added bonus. they should have done that with cod2 aswell. even online u have the same ammount of gore, the weapons are very nicely moddeled and the upgrades are nice aswell. imo its a musthave, way better then modern warfare

Not true. It's only slightly heavier than COD4. My (IMO average rig) can play it on full settings, giving 30-50FPS constantly. Maybe time to upgrade yer GPU? You do realise the 7xxx series is getting old-ish? :hmm: It's not like before anymore, when you could have 4 years old GPU and still run new games on max (RIP GeForce 2 ).

I haven't touched COD multiplayer since COD 2 ruined it. Is it any good now? Does it have that small map, arena deathmatch feel to it that cod 2 had? I hated that ****. They seem to design the maps for 16 players. Hope it's changed...

It's a little bigger than COD2 maps, at least you can drive tanks in some maps, or play the campaign with 4 online players including the zombie one(which I never touched, I get scared like hell, even mention a little word about horror, I jump and run.....it's true, I'm not kidding:roll::roll:).

Oh ****. It has a coop campaign? A game in 2008 actually has a coop campaign? Wow.

not being sarcastic btw. I can't seem to think of any coop games in the last 3 or 4 years. Even then, not much. Still though, the COD campaigns tend to be super linear and short. Can't imagine it being fun more than once.

For a good co-op game online try "Medal of Honor Pacific Assault". Lots of clan run servers running "Invader mode" .Some issues with UAC on Vista but team it with Xfire or Ventrillo and it rocks! Pick it up for less than $25 US as a "Clascic" release.

Even single player is built around a squad. Some silliness in the campaign, like hosing a carrier with .50 cal till it explodes but squad level combat-gotta love it.

Go EZ Company!
