View Full Version : Trying to beat Adolf Galland!

By the end of 1940, Galland had 58 kills. Let's see if I can top that in Battle of Britain II... in four months.

Rules I use:
- Let AI handle the mission planning.
- Free to choose a sortie to fly in, yet max. 3 sorties per day.
- Dead is dead. Bailing out over northern part of the channel/england = game over.
- No padlocking.
- No ammo "cheat" i.e. pressing CTRL+R to replenish the ammo.
- No straying off the mission, i.e. going to attack RAF airfield by myself to catch planes on the ground.
- Target size = Small
- Both RAF & LW skills on veteran (I'm so screwed:-?)
- Allowed to strafe planes on the ground ONLY when there is opportunity to do so without straying off the mission (e.g. escorting bombers whose mission is to strike an RAF field, spotting landing/landed planes on a return flight etc. etc.)

July 10th, 1940 - 3 kills total

Sortie#1 - 1 Kill

Got lost in the clouds somewhere over the convoy the Stukas were to bomb. After a few minutes I noticed I was over land, so waaaay over where I shouldnt be. Turned back to south and spotted an formation of 12 Hurricanes roughly 2000m below me in my 2o'clock. Dived in and aimed at the Hurricane flying on the far right of the formation. Had a quick glance over my shoulder and saw the Hurricane spiral downwards out of control. I claim that as a kill. Continued my dive to 500m and headed home.

Sortie#2 - 2 kills

Another escort duty for a convoy raid. ~40 Stukas with 76 109s babysitting them. Our flight was positioned to the rear, so the battle was on when we got there. I was in at around 5000m, watching the Stukas bomb the convoy with few successfull hits.Took me a good 3-4 minutes to find a good target to bounce on; a lone Hurricane flying towards England at sealevel (possibly out of ammo??). I inverted my plane and pulled back on the stick to get to a steep dive just as the Hurricane passed under me. Dont know what this one was thinking or doing but he never had any idea I was there, I was maybe 150m from him when I opened up with both MGs and cannons. Lots of hits on fuselage and left wing, which broke to pieces after a few more rounds. Kill if you ask me.

I quickly headed back towards the clouds, wouldnt want a Hurricane catch me down here without any advantages. I got to 1100-1200m when I spotted another low flying Hurricane on my 8 o'clock, heading away from me. A quick roll and pull from the stick. I dived to get the speed advantage in case he notices me. As I was closing, I decided to try the tactic I heard Galland used (Just read it from a book last night :)), so I dived under the Hurricane and got a good hits to it's belly when climbing back up. Good tactic I must say, never knew what hit him! With a black smoke pouring out if it's engine, it slowly dived towards the sea. Parachute spotted. 2nd kill for the sortie.

Decided to call it for this time, so headed back home.

EDIT: Ow yeh and I got a new rule I follow occasionally. When I fly, I wear my heavy leather jacket, gloves and a hat under my TIR cap. ******* exhausting it is. :D

Havent flown more than the 2 sorties on July 10th atm. Just woke up, need get me a cup of coffee and tell Schultz to make the preparations, I'm feeling like hunting. ;)

As for the unsporty thingy, I've lost count how many times I've suffered the same fate in the hands of RAF. With the exception that my 109 was already smoking. Revenge is sweet. :yep:

Tho, I just realised that looking at the kills, I should have no problem getting 58 kills in 1 month if I continue like this. I just need to stay alive! :D I think my record is something like 4 sorties without being shot down in BoB II. :P

July 10th, 1940 - 3 kills total

Sortie#3 - 0 kills

Target for today was the convoy 'JAUNTY', just east of London. Some 40 Stukas with the escort of 76 109s. The RAF had had time to rest and refuel during the few hours of inacticity, so we were met with 3 flights of 12 Hurricanes over the target. The furball formed in a second, I lost sight of the Stukas due the poor visibility. So, I decided to grab an easy one again, by bouncing the first low flying target I'd spot. And here was a good candidate, some 1000m below me on my right, a hurricane chasing another 109. I banked and started my dive, should've kept my eyes on the speedometer as I quickly reached 600km/h, making it very hard to control the plane. I got a quick burst off at the Hurricane, with few hits making the Hurricane break off the 109s tail. As I got my plane back in control, I scanned the area for the Hurri I just bounced without luck. I took my 109 to a shallow climb to get the heck out of the beehive. Too late. A Hurricane was glued to my tail, getting some shots off at me. I screamed for help on the radio, but everyone was too busy fighting their own fights. Righto, what to do... continue the climb, not knowing how much E the Hurri has or start going nuts at low level... I decided to try the latter. I banked and rolled, dived and climbed, no result. I called may day when I got another burst to my wing, tower gave me the nearest friendly airfield's heading, I wonder what's the use, it's 50km away, I doubt I can even make it for 500m with this one on my tail. Oh well, nothing to loose, I dived down to tree tops, full gas and hope for the best. After awhile of running, the Hurricane was unable to catch up on me, but still kept on going. My engine had been hit and didnt sound that good, it could give up any minute and I'd be doomed. Last try, I banked hard to left, going head to head with the Hurri. Both tried to get shots at another, no hits. I got back to my heading to home at tree tops, scanning my 6'oclock to see what the Hurri was up to. It seems the last try worked, the Hurri was circling at maybe 400m trying to find me, with no luck. (Gotta love this darn AI!!) So I was saved and even without kills, I prolly saved one Luftwaffe pilot's arse and I get to fight another day. :smug:

I will I will! It's a mess when there's 100+ fighters creating a one big furball. :p

This is my first experience with the new 2.08 AI, it's amazing! I've seen the enemy push it's plane so it kinda 'skids' all over as he's about to lose control, I've had enemies that got surprised make a mistake and stall their planes, the list goes on. :yep:

July 11th, 1940 - 4 kills total

Sortie#1 - 0 kills

Escorted a Dornier 17 on a recon mission to Tangmere AF, I wish our 12 109s would've been allowed to strafe the AF, RAF was nowhere to be seen.

Sortie#2 - 1 kill

Another big raid against a convoy 'Whisky'. Total of 108 planes in the air against 2x12 flights of RAF fighters. We first spotted the enemy on our 2o'clock level, just over the target. I called the bandits and me & the otter flight broke off from the formation and headed to give the Tommies a nice warm greeting. The Otter leader must be a complete wacko, as he decided to take the enemy head on. I on the other hand climbed about 500m above them and as soon as the two met, I dived down and by pure luck got into the six of an Spitfire. This one had to be an experienced pilot, I was struggling to keep up with him as he exploited all the advantages the Spitfire has over an Emil. I was sure he'd go up like some of the RAF pilots tend to do, but this one just kept on turning and turning. I was starting to get worried, peeking over my shoulder all the time for his wingman. I started to get more comfortable when the radio came alive and started spitting out kill confirmations after another, the skies started to clear up around me. I stopped looking around me and concentrated on getting the Tommie to my sights, even a split-second would do. The Spit banked hard to left, dived abit, banked back to right, rolled, climbed abit just to roll and dive again. I was getting very frustrated, this' going to take forever! I cant break off and climb to get advantage, as he would be in my six in no time. Then, by pure luck, I hit him with a reflex shot as he banked yet again infront of my sights, something flew off from the spit, I'd say a rudder or one of it's stabilizers as I hit him into the tail. He rolled to his back and disappeared below me, I quickly followed and saw a huge water pillar raising up from the sea. Scratched one.

At this time, the fight was over for the Otter flight and me, having spent ammo & alot of fuel, I headed for home and let the other escorts finish the job.

Wow, BoB sounds like decent sim. You might have just given them another customer

In IL2 that would have been like this:
"I got on to the six of a Spitfire. This one had to be an experienced pilot, I was struggling to keep up with him as he exploited all the advantages the AI Spitfire has over a human controlled Emil. No overheating, no blacking out, tail warning system that kicks in at 350 meters, endless barrel rolls while diving away at the same time, no diving speed limit, negative Gs. I was starting to get worried, peeking over my shoulder all the time for his wingman. Suddenly I spotted him, keeping his position behind the leader and completely ignoring me."

You forgot about beeing rammed out of the sky by one of your comrades...

Il2 really starts to suck.
Wasn't there a mod that convertef BoBII into a multiplayer game?
It seems to be much more fun than Il2 these days:nope:.

BTW how about the flight model? Is it as good as the one in Il2?

@Fincuan

You certainly have to give BoBII a try!
Here's the forums:

It has the best and most humane AI you've ever seen in an flightsim!

@Schroeder

With 2.08, there came a new FM, but it's still quite forgiving compared to IL2s, tho cant say which is more real as I've never flown a fighter. :p

Yep, I checked them. As expected it has its problems just like IL2, but I'm gonna give it a try. Do you recommend buying through their site, or is there a better or cheaper way compared to their €15.66 download?

IL2 started to suck for me the last year, when I got BOBII. Sure, it doesnt have EVERYTHING that IL2 had when I first got it, but it had few parts that it did better.

My dream is BoB:SoW + BoBII BDG team cooperation. Buddye is the lone "soldier" to continue the coding part of BoBII atm, kudos to him.

EDIT:

Oh, and IL2 has changed. 3.xx patches had better AI, the original IL2 demo had rain on windshield!

HunterICX
11-21-08, 07:45 PM
I can name more or those stuff:
IL2: Sturmovik:
Better FM for FW's
I can recall raindrops on windshield in the original

I can name some more but whats the point, I think the patching and expansions included a lot 3th party work, just look at the difference in cockpit designs. some are really nice the others seems to be simply ported over from the 3D program with the basic colouring. FM of certain aircraft have been messed too much with and so I can continue.

I tend to ignore this about IL2 for one reason, I mostly make fun of it while flying as it spoils my evening I go on a ranting rampage while my intention is to have fun with you guys.

BOBII is a victor in AI, and single player no doubt, but unfortuanly I have no much time to play Single player games.
too bad it has no MP feature

Although I haven't played it for a while (just not a very big WWII flight sim fan, too much of a button/tech geek), BoBII:WoV is as good as it gets for single player WWII stuff.

I d/led and installed the new objects addon just before I went on holiday and broke Tangmere. Thankfully I see on the Shockwave forum that there's a fix, so I will play around with it later and see what I can do.
Anyway, yous lot, don't forget we have a campaign in France to lose in IL2! I expect to see you all reporting for duty on Monday 9pm GMT sharp!
