View Full Version : Midway, March 1942.

I was given a mission to patrol somewhere near Borneo from Pearl Harbor. On my way, I decided to stop at Midway to refuel. It's March 3rd, 1942 and tens of Japanese planes are attacking from the north-west. It tried to find where they were coming from to no avail.

My questions are 2.

1. Is this a random event, or something scripted? It seems too early for the Battle of Midway.

2. Where are the planes coming from? I have combed the area for days, from different save games so I am pretty sure that I have covered every section with no result. Surely they can't be flying from the mainland?

If it's a random event, that's pretty cool. But it's a bit annoying that I can't work out where all the planes are coming from!

Oh and be kind... It's my first post.

I think its scripted. I once managed to pass the airplanes by shooting down some (difficult with 42's available weapons) and get close enough to see the japanese fleet turning around and leaving.

It's 3 months too early.

There is a bug in the game regarding scripted units that have airgroups. When you load a patrol, various campaign layers load. They usually load well in advance of the date just in case you stay out a long time. So it's loading Midway on the off chance you are still at sea in late May, early June. Once loaded, the bug is that while the ships do not appear until the proper date they are scripted for, the PLANES in the airgroup appear right away.

Welcome to the forums.

I take it your playing an un moddified version of the game.
In the un modded game the air cover is relentless in that region regardless of the time of year.

Best course of action is to run submerged by day.

Yeah, the air is relentless cause of the CV airgroup bug.

Ah.. did not know that. Explains alot.

Thankfully some of the mods tone that down a bit. Used to take forever to sail out of Pearl or Midway.

So, does that mean I could sit around Midway for three months casually shooting down airplanes and repairing until the real battle? Then, could I attack some aircraft carriers with no planes left?

BTW, yes I am playing unmodded. I took a look at some of the mods and while they appear great, they seem to change far more than I want to. I would just like a mod to remove some of the air traffic without changing everything else in the game.

On a side note, how is it possible for the Japanese destroyers to accelerate the way they do? From slow to very fast in a matter of seconds makes it very difficult to get a torpedo into them unless you are at a very close range.

No, there is evidently a limitless supply of the planes.

Besides the point of this game is to sink ships I believe.

Actually, there are some fixes for the aircraft.

I have one (FF probably expired) that simply dumps 99% of the aircraft from CV airgroups. This is actually entirely realistic since the stock paradigm for generating air attacks is, well, totally unrealistic.

True, but it would be a lot easier to sink carriers with no planes left. :D
