From what I have learned the easy way of estimating AOB is measuring the lateral distance between two known points along the length of a vessel, i.e masts.
Has anyone thought of incorporating this into SH?

Well another way to get the angle........ I've never try it. It's based on those sonar plot room, I dont know how modders and players do but what i do and think with physics and math----->
Easier for me to calculate if you are already heading on a plotted course.
With Sonar
1-Stop your ship
2-Use sonar and try to find their range and bearing lets say bearing is 290* and range is 4500m
*Optional: Set a timer and wait for x sec and note the results so you'll get the speed later
3-Use sonar and find their range again......... after 70 seconds the ship is at 316* and range is 3800m.
Now draw on your map
Measure as much as you want with the sonar, it gives more precision.
Now now...... you should have a line.
I would use a ruler and draw a line // line of the map (x)
with trigonometrie
b^2= a^2 + c^2 - 2ac.cosB
a and c is the distance you got with your sonar
a=4500m, b=3800m B= |290-316|
delta B in french or B is the
b=(a^2 + c^2 - 2ac.cosB)6(1/2)
b= 1987,................m

Sure you can do it that way, but you would need to know range as well, and the farther away your are, the more error you will have.
However, if you can measure the length of the vessel and the height of a known part of the superstructure (such as a mast or funnel), you don't even need the range. That's essentially the method as described in the Angriffsscheibe Handbuch example #5.
You observe a T2 Tanker at long range. Looking through the attack scope, the bow to stern is 7.5 ticks long, and the mast is 3 ticks high, to give an observed Aspect Ratio (AR=length/height) of 2.5 (7.5/3). What is the target’s angle on the bow (AOB)?
This method is less accurate as the AOB approaches zero because the beam (width) of the ship will distort your measurements. If the beam of the ship was zero, then mathematically:
AOB = asin (AR observed / AR reference)

and there's the U-jagd tools mod (also incorporated into the OLC GUI)
which includes tools to solve this exact problem and others
