It's been general (no pun intended) practice to have the Stars and Stripes as the background for these kinds of photos... It's not like she was sitting in front of Guantanamo Bay or something... I can imagine she was sitting at a desk originally (as cited in the article) and it was not convenient to pose elsewhere. So they replaced the background. Big deal...

AP says that adjusting photos and other imagery, even for aesthetic reasons, damages the credibility of the information distributed by the military to news organisations and the public.And we all know that AP and the other news services only PRINT the truth. Hypocrites.
