i read up on some of the convoy approaching tactics some of the sh3 players use here and it seems that many of them take shots from 1000+ meters away from the merchants. i generally set up shots on single vessels from no more than 500 meters using steam torpedoes in day light (merchants seem to spot them and the torpedoes dont make it in time before they change course) i have missed shots at 500 meters because of this. What should be my TDC settings for firing at over 1000 meters? i always set up for a 90 degree AOB. What bearing should the ship be at when i fire the torpedoes so they have enough time to reach their target and hit? Should i get closer if i can? If im using electric torpedoes which only go slow at what bearing should i fire the eels? should i fire a salvo or one at a time?

Bearing at which you should fire at 90 angle depends from distance and speed of target. Once this is given to the TDC, move your scope ahead of 0° towards which side target is coming from until he gyro angle is 000. Should be somewhere in the 10 to 20 degrees lead for average distance between 500 and 1000m. Anything worth shooting at I usually send a 2 torps salvo with a small spread like 2 or 3 degrees. And I try not to attack a convoy by daylight (learned that by loosing a few subs...;)) Don't forget to open tubes before...

In daylight (submerged) attacks, I use only electrics, never steam torpedoes. Also, at 500 m & closing, there is the risk of the periscope being spotted if a) it's up for too long a time, &/or b) the U-boat is going over 2 kts, i.e., making a periscope wake. Taking many brief peeks with the periscope is better than one long view. Hope that helps!

Most of my hits seem to happen from 1,000-700 meters. In convoys, Iodten shoot at targets 1500-2,000 meters away first, then fire at closer targets. I try to have my boat facing 90 degrees to convoy course and fire when target is 20 degrees off.

I shoot at point blank range as much as I can. Some situations require that you hold back though...
