I'm still trying to figure out how I got destroyed. It's 2000 hours on Jan 24, 1940. I sneak into the outer harbor where lies 2 fat troop transports and a Chatham class. Quiet as a mouse I sneak in without anyone knowing and line up on the troop transports...I am at periscope depth and "silent running" until just before the double 2's salvos. I unleash the fish and get a kill on one transport and before I can see how well I did on the 2nd transport...I get destroyed. By what? I'm at periscope depth yet I take immense amounts of damage, lose all my diesel fuel and go down like a cheap...well...you know what I mean. I have no idea what happened. I was at a dead stop with 7 meters below the keel so, I didn't run into a pier or anything. Now, I did have the periscope up and I saw searchlights from the transports, and possibly the Chatham, come on after the first 2 torps hit. If they see the 'scope can guns get me at periscope depth? I can't figure any other way I received SO much damage within seconds of my first strikes.

I know I'll get some "what the heck are you doing in Dover harbor?" responses...I'm trying to kill something big, fat and unmoving! :p ;)

Mines! Or you were to close to the Explosion or something along the lines!:hmm:
Does it matter...you dead!:rotfl:
;)

BTW, the Dover harbour is cool! Was there with a W@W patrol used a Type 2A. Sneaked in an left some mines back!

I was well inside the harbor, inside the seawall and at dead stop for over 5 minutes...so I doubt it was mines. Yes, I am dead :p ...but I would like to know why and by who or what. Now..."close to the explosion"...is that something that's modelled in GWX 2.1? I've done this type of thing in vanilla SH3 and WAC without any damage. I was 1200 meters away from the nearest troop transport, so I doubt it was "collateral damage".

I believe it was deck mounted guns, firing on my telescope sighting...anyone have a comment? Can these guns "reach out and touch me", at periscope depth, if they can locate me by my leaving the periscope up?

Thanks!

yes... a 5" shell can penetrate water.

hehe

if they see your periscope they will fire everything they have at it.

some of what they throw at you will hit you and inflict damage:dead:

WTF were you doing in Dover?:o Stay out of the harbours and shallow water. It'll get you killed. Oh too late...

Bah!

I've snuck in and out of Scapa on more than one occasion!

My guess, you still had some speed (creeping) and hit a mine or where hit by an artillery shell--mine is more likely.

Either that or this is an armed trawler NOT docked parked near the entrance Maybe he got you

For the next time its beter to wait they leave the harbour first, then choose a strategical position to ambush the enemy...its more safer!

I had a Chatham class CL docked off my port forward side and an ASW trawler docked behind me in another part of the harbor...but he might have been able to see my 'scope. Things happened pretty fast but, after replaying things in my head, I think the Chatham opened fire and sunk me, I hit the bottom and breached the diesel tanks. Once I was on the bottom it got quiet...no periscope to shoot at? But without a drop of fuel I was pretty well hosed.

I've snuck into harbors many times with vanilla or WAC SH3. This was my 2nd attempt at one in GWX 2.1. I tried Scapa first and found that at least one of the eastern approaches was blocked by a subnet, which I promptly got stuck on top off. I was surfaces at the time and it was way dark. No damage but I could not get off the net. The game allowed me to return to base in this instance...I guess because I was not being "hunted" at the time. Are all the eastern approaches to Scapa blocked? What about the western side?

I have tried to go into Dover and was sunk. After that I did not try it again. I could get into most harbours w/o being seen. New York was the best one to get into. Any of the Channel ports I would not recommend sneaking into, they are deathtraps.

Scapa Flow is easy to get into, getting out in one piece is another.

My advice is STAY OUT of Dover.

Are any of the eastern or western approaches to Scapa open (with GWX 2.1, that is)? Or must you enter from the main channel from the south?

Their not that bad, I snuck into Portland, Dover and Southend many a time and said hello with a fish or two and live to tell the tale;) , mind you I dont have GWX.

Dover has been one of my favorite places to raid in the early stages of the war along with Scapa Flow, Hartelpool, Loch Ewe, heck I've even thought about raiding Liverpool but never did. Come to think of it I've even raided Gibraltar and New York!! But keep this in mind port raiding is the easest ways of getting a kill but it is also the most dangerous!

Yes........The southermost eastern approach is almost completely blocked by three wrecks. You can actually thread that needle quite easily at slow speeds.......2 knots.

I time it such that I get there with enough sunlight to pull off that maneuver at periscope depth and cruise in while silent running......you need to stay close to the center of the channel or you may run lightly aground.

Usually some sort of light coal barge is stationed at the inward side of this channel......anyhow be careful with the scope. Wait until it's dark before you pop it above water once deep along the channel.

Next I scoot into scapa proper, line up on my target and shoot a slow spread from 5,000 meters away.

I then high-tail it to the western channels, putting some distance between me and the target before it goes boom.

I may even surface and run at flank if it's dark enough.

The southern western channel is open along it's north side. You can escape out into the Northern Hebrides approaches and the Atlantic from there.

Excellent...thanks for the intel.
