"Cruiser" because in German we call them Seenot-Rettungskreuzer (= distress rescue cruiser)

just for the movie and pictures:

I love these ships, since my childhood I am fascinated by them, their looks, speed and capability. I don't know the modern types of them, but the older ones are said to be unsinkable and able to capsize 360°, I don't know the english word for it, I mean "durchkentern": the ships capsizes, and rolls under water, and just pops up again on the other side. While this may irritate the crew , the ship was said to remain technically operational when doing so. - Also, the dhingy and the ramp for it I found to be extremely cool as a teenager. I never had a faible for motor yachts, if I ever would have done a sail tour around the world, I would have chosen a sailboat - or to buy an old unit of these SAR cruisers and do the trip in it. Give one of these units to me, and a Seahawk in colours of the US coast guard - as I said in the flightsiom forum, that colour scheme I also find extremely sexy! http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=142930

Well, the DGzRS calls cutter sized ships cruisers, the USCG calls cruiser sized ships cutters
:rotfl:

But libertarians would be pleased to hear that SAR in Germany is handled by a private donation-based non-profit organisation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Gesellschaft_zur_Rettung_Schiffbr%C3%BCch iger)
This is simply because the DGzRS was the first to start rescuing people out of the north sea and they still do it today.
Their sponsors are mostly the bigwigs of the Hamburg and Bremen shipping companies, but many shops even in southern germany have the small boat-shaped donation boxes.
These are the only donations I regularly make because the money is well-spent.
DGzRS is one of those "too good to be true" organisations.
A bunch of tough, dedicated volunteers (only about 100 of 800 people get paid) who forgot more about seamanship than most people will ever learn.
Their boats ("cruisers") are state of the art, in fact many modern innovations for such craft were made or pioneered by the DGzRS, especially the stern launch and recovery ramp for small boats, which they started using in the 1960s(!).

Problem is, DGzRS is only boat-based, they do not have an air component.
Air-Sea rescue is done by the navy, but their 20 Sea Kings are simply too few to serve in all their roles. The BGS (now federal police) used to have SAR helos, but I don't know if they still used them.
But usually a fast boat can get to an accident in time and in real emergencies, there's an SAR helo on call.
However, the Sea Kings crews are not as specialized as the USCG HH-60 crews.

Those ships are amazing. Took a guided tour on one in Maasholm once, like 20 years ago.
