I've been away from subsim for sometime and catching the bug to go back on patrol. Funny thing is I am thinking of setting up my old system again to play SH2 rather than SH3 on my current PC. Eventhough SH3 has many great things going for it, I think I really miss the old game! I spent so much time modding SH2, it got to a point where I could never finish a mission because i would stop mid game to change/improve something:lol:. Those damn sounds were never just right :rotfl: The manual targetting in SH3 was all wrong for a U Boot and I never could find away to deal with the crew management in a way that seemed right. Anyway, Hi again to all the old guard still tinkering away with this game.
Hi Lafee, long not seen you
Yeah, SH2 was nearly a vice of his own  If it had the old AOD gameplay, I would still play it today even despite the old graphics.

Hi Hitman, it has been a long time! One could almost say the graphics were outdated when it was released:o

I have to get SHII off my brother.
My rig would probably play SHIII but with Starforce I won't risk it.
If I put SHII back on my PC what are the mods that I need? I think I still have the fix that Neal paid for.
Want to play with SH2? Here's two single-player campaigns you can join. Both utilize monthly-issued historical missions.
Join the third rendition of The Atlantik Kampaign.

We also use SH2 together with Pacific Aces for our monthly "Pacific Aces" campaign.

That's cool but what upgrades user mods are best for SHII?

the mods list is extensive! I think the hard part will actually be tracking them down. I suggest going to the archives and finding the SH2/classic sub games thread and do a search there for the mod lists. I will try to compile a list for as well but no time to do it today.
LIST OF ESSENTIALS (Many more things are available, but this is minimum specs to make SH2 rock enough  )
Graphics:
1024 res from subsim plus fixes (Service pack)
Any good watermod
Vickers Torpedo slicks plus fireball add-on
Many good interface mods out there, I heartly recommend: Darkstream's translucent pannels, Bergen Paints Menus, all of Jiim's mods, etc.
Sound:
Projekt Swordfish
Gameplay:
Fletcher's Mod or CB's DesV5 Mod
Campaigns & Missions
Floater's Kriegstanz
Subsim's 2nd Kampaign
Rossbach's Artic campaign generator
Aces Kampaign V2

What about Project Messerwetzer or whatever? Is that the thing Neal paid for?
Theoretically it is only required for multiplayer. In single player it fixes also some issues and gives you manual control of diving planes, so I guess it should be added to the list :yep:

I really liked SH2/PA, but there was one show stopper issue for me. You cannot save/reload, since it breaks the AI.
So, aside from completing one patrol in single playing, what do you do about this?
I had a solution on my old machine. It went like this. I had a separate SH2/PA Win XP partition. It was a clone of my main system partition, but I did not maintain it. Whenever I had enough of a patrol, I would flip back to the desktop and hibernate. When I rebooted my SH2/PA partition, the game session would once again be running and I could continue without the AI going brain dead.
Although the above solution works, I consider it to be too much trouble when I can choose between AOD, SHCE, and SH3/GWX. SH2's AI was on par with SH3's in terms of being unimpressive. I still prefer AOD for superior game play.

Manual dive planes. I gave up using that. It was so incredibly effective it felt like cheating. You could take the boat down or up at a staggering rate.

I got tired of scripted missions after one time through. I'll take SH3 or AOD for a real career any day.

That was the brilliance of Kriegstanz and PA.
They generated what would have effectively been a rather static campaign for SH2 each time you played a campaign. However, since each generated campaign was different from the last ... they effectively achieved a dynamic campaign using a static/linear game engine. It was truly brilliant. I was really impressed.

Funny thing that you guys opened thread about SHII, because I just installed it and I am having troubles running it under WinXP/SP3.
Is there some sort of guide or tricks how to install and run it?

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying shii.
Surfing around I discover 2 versions of SHII:
The classic version and.....
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/513BFXXBZ0L._SL500_AA280_.jpg
and this version....
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JVCCNEYJL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
Can somebody tell me what the differnces are/
Thanks.
I can't tell the differences, but at most it will come pre-patched to 1.1 (Only one patch was ever released, and it also eliminated the need for having the CD in the drive). So, the main difference could be the need to dowload 1.1 patch, which is still available from UBI.
Buy any of them, the one that is cheaper.

I had no problems with SHII or DC running with xp sp3 until I upgraded my video card to an Nvidia 8800GT. DC would not install until I installed from safe mode. In any case both are unplayable now due to the text graphics getting corrupted. Unless Nvidia comes out with downward compatable drivers, your only choice is to get an older PC running as I have. That's not too bad of an option as they can be had for cheap from recyclers, and win98 can be purchased off eBay.

Must be graphic card problem. I have Nvidia 9600GT and the game will install but it will not launch. I get black window and then the game is stuck. I have to go and manually kill the process to get rid of it. Shame.

Too bad I do not have enough room to have two PCs here.
I believe this is an Nvidia problem, but not an ATI problem. At least for somewhat older ATI cards. SHII installs and plays with no problem on my older ATI X800GTO, WINDOWS XP equipped machine. But no hope at all on Nvidia 8800GT. You do not need Win 98 for this sim. There have been other threads that explore these issues, but I can't run them down now, at work.
